Prom King and Queens--Nick Verreos on KNBC "Today In LA: Weekend" News Program: The Recap!

Prom Perfect!

Peacock Prince: Nick Verreos, NBC-LA Studios Burbank California

This past Sunday, I did a fun and very FABULOUS TV segment on KNBC-LA, Channel 4 "Today in LA: Weekend" News Show. It was ALL ABOUT Prom Dressing! Yes, kiddies, it's "Prom Season" and I, your faithful Style Guy, is here to show all the lovely Prom Princesses--how to get the best deals in Prom Fashion--via the FIDM Scholarship Store.

On TV: Nick Verreos on KNBC "Today In LA: Weekend" News Show, Prom Dresses TV Segment

As you know, I am the Official Spokesperson for the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/FIDM (as well as an Instructor and Alumn) and when I found out that the FAB FIDM Scholarship Store had a whole lot of new Prom Dress options donated by TOP DESIGNERS, well, I just had to "Shout it to the LA TV World"!

Prom Color Kings: KNBC-LA Anchor Ted Chen and Nick Verreos, "Today In LA: Weekend" Studio

On Sunday, I filmed a LIVE "Prom Dress" TV segment with Anchor Ted Chen, who--by the way --was looking very "Nick" in his bright turquoise blue shirt and striped tie! I showed three Prom Looks--all from the FIDM Scholarship Store and ALL from UNDER $40! In case you didn't know, many Big Name Designers and Manufacturers donate their clothing to the store and then, the store sells them at DEEPLY discounted prices with ALL proceeds creating FIDM student scholarships. So, yes, I LOVE the FIDM Scholarship Store!

I brought three beautiful girls from LA Models Agency to show the looks:

Don't Want To Wear a Dress for The Prom? Then Take a look at this FAB ensemble...

First up was the stunning Aleah--This look I dubbed "The Individualist": This was the perfect option for the girl who doesn't want to go the dress and/or gown option for the Prom. So, I put her in wide-legged black pants, a silver lame top and accessorized the look with fingerless lace gloves and a FAB fascinator.
The Total Look: $19! (Hello!)

Short & Sassy: Model Katie in a purple dress from the FIDM Scholarship Store, KNBC-TV Segment

Katie was the next model, and I put her in a "Short & Sassy" purple party dress with side shirring and cascading ruffles. Lace fingerless gloves--a la Madonna circa 1985--and a Camelia flower and ribbon hair adornment finished off her look.
The Total Look: $30!!! ( The dress is only $24)

One-Shoulder Prom: Model Kaela in one-shoulder gown from the FIDM Scholarship Store, KNBC-TV Segment

Next, it was all about "Hollywood Red Carpet Glamour". Kaela wore a one-shoulder "Grecian Goddess" mauve-colored side-shirred gown that is priced at only $35!!! This is a big-name designer gown that would retail for $500! (Get OUTTA here!!!)

Prom Queen: Model Martha, wears a gown from the FIDM Scholarship Store, KNBC-TV Segment

Finally, Martha finished off my "Nick Verreos Presents Prom Looks" KNBC-LA segment, showing a baby blue-and-white strapless ball gown that--wait for it--was priced at $24! Not kidding. Of course, I styled her on the "funky side"...

And gave her red Converse "Chucks" high-tops, so she would be that "funky" Prom Princess!!! I was inspired by Academy Award-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld from "True Grit" who showed up to the Vanity Fair Party wearing her Custom Marchesa tea-length gown---and her Converse "Chucks". Thanks Hailee (or her stylist) for that inspiration!

All in all, it was a fabulous segment and it was great to have the opportunity to show these four very chic--but still "budget-priced"-- Prom Looks, just in time for Prom Season. Mommies and daughters: Get thee to the FIDM Scholarship Store and shop shop shop!!!

My December Budget

Old Navy / Old Navy / Limited / Limited
Banana / Limited / Banana
Gap / Limited / Marshall's
Banana / Old Navy / Target / Gap / Limited

It's my favorite time of year for shopping! You simply can't beat the post-Christmas deals in stores. Here's how I spent my December budget - most items I picked up yesterday, and some I grabbed during Christmas shopping last week. Not everything is 100% final, but pretty close! Here's what I got:

1. Old Navy plaid, $17 - I can't get enough plaid lately and this top was perfect to wear on Christmas Day. I also love this red plaid shirt from Banana.
2. Old Navy fox sweater, $16 - A reader helped me track this sweater down a couple weeks ago. Using the style # (see link for it), I called the store and had one shipped to me from another city.
3. Limited bow sweater, $25 - I'm trying not to go overboard with the graphic sweater trend, but I couldn't resist this blush pink sweater on sale yesterday. I also love this bow sweater from Forever 21.
4. Limited sequin cardigan, $20 - I was crushing on this sweater last month but couldn't bring myself to spend $40 on it. I found it for half that yesterday (75% off original price) and happily scooped it up.
5. Banana burgundy cardigan, $22 - You may recall that I bought a burgundy cardigan from Banana last month for $19 - a button popped off and I don't have a replacement button so I decided to pick up a replacement sweater. Still hoping to fix the other one, but I also love the four front pockets on this version.
6. Limited striped skirt, $25 - I bought this on Black Friday and only recently decided to keep it. It's soft and comfy and I can't wait to pair it with boots.
7. Banana navy top, $20 - A classic piece that I will wear for years, and grabbed on sale yesterday.
8. Gap hat, $10 - I immediately regretted this purchase. No idea how I'm going to pull this hat off, but I just might try!
9. Limited necklace, $20 - I used a $15-off coupon they were handing out in the store yesterday for this price. Not entirely sure I'm keeping it yet.
10. Marshall's shoes, $28 - The Me Too shoes pictured are very similar to the ones I picked up at Marshall's on clearance yesterday, but mine have a slight wedge. I need more practical almost-flat shoes in my closet and I love the cap toe.
11. Banana white dress, $24 - I fell in love with this dress a couple months ago and am beyond psyched I found one at this price! I need to have it altered (none of the sizes fit perfectly), however, the tailoring cost is worth it with that price.
12. Old Navy pink dress, $9 - This dress is much more neon than pictured, and will be perfect this spring. It was on clearance in the store, no coupon.
13. Target pink jeans, $22 - I tried on these blush pink jeans on a whim and fell in love. They also come in mint and tons of other colors online.
14. Gap velvet jeans, $24 - I ordered these from another store (my store didn't have my size). Can't wait for them to arrive.
15. Limited plaid jeans, $20 - I never would've given these jeans a second thought if they hadn't been on the clearance rack, but now that I tried them on, I love them.

Grand Total = $302

My budget is $250 per month. I had $26 left from last month's budget and will either carry over the remaining $30 into January's budget, or return an item. To learn more see "How To Set a Clothing Budget."

LOFT / Ann Taylor / Gap

Also, an update on mint skinnies. I tried on all three of these while Christmas shopping and loved all of them. The Gap ones are my favorite color-wise, but I liked the length of the LOFT ones better. I'm waiting for a good sale/promo on the Gap ones and will likely scoop them up. All three are good options though!

What deals did you score in December? What items are on your January wish list?

Nick Verreos "Puts It All Together" in the Windy Cindy at Macy's State Street Chicago: The Recap!

Chicago Gets Fashionably Windy!!!

Trench Coat Diva: Nick Verreos in front of Macy's on State Street Chicago

Last weekend I had the FABULOUS opportunity--and pleasure--of flying to Chicago to host a Macy's "Putting It All Together" fashion event at the historic--and iconic--Macy's on State Street, the second largest department store IN THE WORLD, in the historic Marshall Fields building!

Flower Display: Nick Verreos poses outside a Macy's State Street Window Display

After checking into the wonderfully chic theWit Downtown Chicago Boutique Hotel, I got some dinner at the hotel's "State and Lake" Restaurant (I had one of the most DELICIOUS Steak Frites I have EVER had btw!), and even met up with a friend in "Boys Town" (naturally) for some "Welcome To Chicago" cocktails. Soon, it was time for me to head back to the hotel and get some rest for my event the following day.

I had been to Chicago many times--to judge several seasons of that city's Castings of Project Runway and even last year, hosted a Macy's in-store event at the Woodfield location in the outskirts of Chicago in Schaumburg...but NEVER had I stepped foot in the AMAZING Macy's on State! And WOW!!! As I walked in and was told to look up, I witnessed the beyond-incredible Tiffany Dome Ceiling which immediately took my breath away.

Tiffany Dome Ceiling, Macy's State Street

The immensity and elegance of it all. The architecture of the building was incredible. It reminded me of a combination between Galleries Lafayette as well as maybe the Paris Opera House! I almost forgot it was a department store. In addition, they were having their annual Macy's Flower Show, which goes on until April 10th so I was excited to be there just in time to see it!

Spring was definitely in BLOOM at the store with gorgeous displays of flowers of all kinds. My favorite was, of course, the soaring "Tower of Flowers" (see photo above) which was ASTOUNDING to see!!! I felt like Alice in Wonderland...at Macy's!

Spring Flowers at the Walnut Room Restaurant, Macy's on State, 7th Floor

I capped off my quick tour by going to the historic Walnut Room on the 7th Floor (just above that aforementioned Tiffany Dome Ceiling). But then, it was time to get ready to host my "Putting It All Together" event. I asked the Special Event Directors and the Store Manager if they'd mind if I did a little "Shout Out and Mention" on the intercom about the event, in order to remind shoppers to come! And for the FIRST TIME EVER--or so they told me--they allowed someone other than their official intercom event announcer to yes, go ahead and speak! And so I did!!! (Love you Macy's on State!).

The Macy's Accessories Table, "Putting It All Together" Event, Macy's State Street Impulse Department

Well, I guess, that helped a little bit, because upon arriving, the entire Macy's Impulse Department was FILLED with shoppers, tourists, lots of Mommies and their daughters--some sons too!--as well as some Project Runway fans (I "Heart" you!). I was SOOOO excited to do my event!

Cinch The Waist Girls: Nick Verreos on stage, Macy's State Street "Putting It All Together" event

As you may know, "Putting It Together" is an in-store event/fashion show/contest where I chose people from the audience, they get two minutes to style models--using Macy's Spring fashion & accessories that are on nearby racks and tables--for special "challenges" which I pre-selected; such as "Having brunch with your girlfriends" or "Dressing for a Night Out", etc.

A Night Out Outfit: Model shows off a look styled by one of our contestants, Macy's State Street "Putting It All Together" event

The models then change and are brought back out and the audience votes (by hootin' and hollerin') whose outfit was best. The winner gets a $100 Macy's Gift Card while the Runner-Up got a $25 Card. I had such a BLAST doing the event. The entire audience got really into it, which was great!

Who Will I Pick Next? Nick Verreos scans the audience for the next contestant, Macy's State Street "Putting It All Together" event

There were so many cute little girls--all fashion'ed out--that at one point, I called them all up on stage and did an impromptu "Macy's 'Putting It Together' Walk Off"! I think the young ladies--and their mommies--LOVED that! And for a rare moment---I chose A BOY!!! Yes, a boy...to be one of the "contestant/stylists" for one of the challenges. Usually, since the challenges run in the vain of "How would you dress for a Girls Night Out" , (and it's only women's clothing and accessories to chose from) I usually pick women to be the contestants...but I wanted to change it up a bit.

And he WON! (Our male contestant/fashionista above with me) Yeayyyyy for the Boys!!!! We all had a fun time and yes, I can't wait to come back to Chicago and Macy's State Street and "Put It All Together" once again!!!

Bye Windy City...for now!

My January & February Budget

Here's a recap of everything I bought in January and February! Items on my wish list that I crossed off include mint jeans, nude pointy toe pumps, a sheath work dress, cobalt blazer, and dark skinny jeans. I also picked up a bunch of t-shirts for casual days and a few fun, trendy items like the neon anorak. But my overall goal was to buy quality versus quantity, and pieces that I will wear to death. What items have you invested in this year? What items are on your spring wish list?

1. Zara jacket, $90 (similar, similar, similar)
2. Zara jacket, $40 (similar, similar, similar)
3. F21 mint jeans, $25
4. F21 mint tank, $7 (similar)
5. J.Crew shirt, $35 (similarsimilar)
6. Piperlime pumps, $32
7. DSW Audrey Brooke, $20 (similar)
8. Gap t-shirts, $9

= $258

1. This jacket was a huge chunk of my budget, but well worth the investment. I've already worn it ten times and plan to love it for years to come. It was on sale, original price $130.
2. Another sale purchase (I don't recall the original price) and another classic ladylike jacket that I'll love forever. I have nothing similar in my closet.
3. After a year-long hunt, I finally crossed off mint jeans on my wish list! I also acquired these Gap mint jeans c/o.
4. An undershirt / summer tank in the perfect shade of mint.
5. I added yet another silk campshirt to my collection with this top from J.Crew. I couldn't pass up the in-store sale price; the Blythe blouse is usually $110 full price.
6. My hunt for nude, pointy toe pumps ended when I found this brand-name pair for a steal online.
7. Buying out-of-season sometimes pays off, like these sandals on sale at DSW (original price I believe is $90). I will be wearing them a ton this summer.
8. I used $20 in Gap rewards to get these three t-shirts for $9 total. I love the neon colors (periwinkle, orange and pink) and they are perfect for casual days.

1. Banana dress, $50 Christmas gift card
2. H&M jeans, $32 (similar, similar, similar)
3. Limited anorak, $37
4. F21 cobalt blazer, $30
5. F21 Journey shirt, $18
6. Limited cardigan, $30
7. Express cardigan, $27
8. Express aztec t-shirt, $25
9. Limited belt, $20
10. Ann Taylor lace shirt, $30
11. Old Navy mint tee, $10 (similar)

= $259

1. I've been on the hunt for classic work sheaths in fun colors and this one was $70 in the store (only petite sizes), plus an extra 25% off sale promo. I used a $50 gift card from Christmas so only wound up paying a few dollars for it.
2. My hunt for the perfect pair of dark, slightly distressed denim ended - of all places - at H&M! I never buy jeans there, who knew? I used a 20% off coupon on the original $40 price tag.
3. I fell in love with this fun anorak online and had to have it. In-store price was $49, and I used a coupon for an additional $15 off.
4. I featured this blazer in this blog post and wound up ordering it. Looks great in person, I can't wait to wear it.
5. I featured this baseball tee in this blog post and wound up ordering it!
6. I unwrapped a piece of chocolate when I entered the store that was good for 40% off everything full-price, which I used on this Tory-Burch-esque cardigan.
7. I've worn my similar sweater coat to death, and thought a thinner version would be a perfect staple for Florida weather. It was on promo for $39 in the store, plus I used a coupon for another $15 off.
8. This shirt is way cuter and more neon in person. I used a coupon to get $15 off.
9. This belt was an instant "yes" for me - I want to spend the day on a yacht and wear a navy blazer with gold buttons. It also kind of reminds me of an underwear band, but I'm comfortable with that. I used a 40% off coupon.
10. I was shopping with a friend and tried on this sale shirt and fell in love. I want to style it in a boho outfit, stay tuned.
11. Another great casual t-shirt, found on clearance.

My monthly budget is $250 (I had a little left over from December). For more info, please see "How to Set a Clothing Budget."

My March Budget

Limited  /  American Eagle (similar)  /  Forever 21  /  Lord & Taylor
Banana (similar)  /  Limited  /  Limited  /  American Eagle (love this one)
American Eagle  /  LOFT  /  Limited  /  Express

After a six week hiatus from the mall (unintentional, I was swamped), I spent an afternoon shopping and spent my March budget all in one day. And what a day it was - I was emotional and my mood definitely affects what I buy. I wound up with fun, unique and "loud" pieces and hardly any staples, because hey - I was looking for fun things that would lift my spirits. :-)

The other reason I wound up with so many fun items is because I didn't have a wish list. I often stress how important I think it is to have a list during shopping. Whether it is a certain color of jeans I want acquire, or a type of shoe (such as flat sandals), I like to mostly stick to that list and then also get a couple unplanned pieces that catch my eye. But the double-whammy of not having a list and being emotional? That's how I wound up with all "sizzle" pieces. I'm letting it slide this month, but next month I will be back to a more disciplined routine!

1. Limited dress, $26 - This dress was on promo plus I used a coupon, so I got it for a steal. It was an Easter contender, and I plan to use it for on-camera and work functions.
2. American Eagle dress, $46 - Can you say obsessed? This might be my favorite dress ever. I love the boho vibe and white dresses in general.
3. Forever 21 dress, $20 - Another fun piece for a night out that I talked up in this post.
4. Lord & Taylor top, $10 - The one item I bought before I hit the mall. I ordered it online due to the crazy low price (it was originally $78).
5. Banana necklace, $26 - Wait, I didn't need another statement necklace? A girl can never have too many in my opinion, and I love the sweetness of this one.
6. Limited belt, $15 - A bow belt just seemed necessary at the time. And the tough zipper detail is perfection.
7. Limited belt, $15 - A black belt with zebra heads also seemed necessary (did I mention I was in the mood for fun?). It's like a statement necklace for your waist.
8. American Eagle top, $38 - More bohemian love. This navy, slightly sheer top is my favorite kind of top to wear on weekends. Looks great with my coral fringe sandals for summer.
9. American Eagle shorts, $35 - I love printed shorts but I especially love these because they are denim. And American Eagle's "midi" fit is my favorite inseam length for shorts.
10. LOFT skirt $40 - I wanted this for Easter. I had already bought the bow belt and realized it would match. It was a bit more than I wanted to spend (they had a 40% off promo going in the store), but to save time and so I could wear it for the holiday, I went for it.
11. Limited cardigan, $17 - The only item I might return. I love this kind of colorblocking so much, I'm just always afraid I will tire of it quickly.
12. Express top, $25 - Mint and peplum? Say no more. And I love high necklines like these for statement necklaces.

Total = $313
Forever 21  /  Target
Forever 21  /  Forever 21

Also thought I'd share my little "head start" on April's budget. I ordered these three Forever 21 items online. I saw the camo shorts in person and they are awesome - way baggier and not nearly as short.  The jeans and t-shirt will totally depend on what they look like on. And I bought the neon orange fringe swim suit at Target. I love the fit!

What were your favorite March purchases? What items are on your April wish list?

Pulling Into Departure Stress-Free & Dress to Kill

Rest

One of the things I hate the most when traveling is being either tired, sick or both, when pulling into departure. Feeling sick makes your cranky and impatient which, to me, is like the biggest no-no for a frequent traveler. Patience is key people, you are not the only ones on a tight schedule ! On the other hand, feeling sleepy is also a perfect set-up to forget stuff, mix-up gates and assigned seating, and, in the worst case scenario, not be quick enough to respond given an emergency situation.

Therefore, no matter what my departure time is, I always make sure to get a good night sleep the night before in order to pull through the day like a champ. !

Water vs. Coffee

Sure, catching the 6 o'clock flight in the morning or the last one of the day, can make your daily cuppa seem like heaven on earth yet, it might just not be what you actually need to feel like you're on top of your game. Thing is, a cup of coffee, or tea for that matter, will indeed give you this boost of energy at first, but will also dehydrate your body at the same time. And what is the most common symptom of dehydration aside form thirst..? Sleepiness.

So you're basically back to square one. I recommend drinking both, alternatively, or stick with water to feel energized and revitalized in no time ! Plus, at over 10,000 feet above the ground, when the relative humidity level drops from our cozy 50-60% to the harsh 10% it is maintained at, in-flight, your body will thank you for opting for hydrating fluids prior to taking off ;)

Athleisure

One thing that saddens me a bit about air-travel style is that, no one dresses up to fly anymore. Flying seems to have lost its certain je-ne-sais-quoi that was, nevertheless, a big part of the travel culture. Airport style, that is ! I mean, I get it, no one wants to spend hours running around in stilettos or dress shoes, tight pencil skirts and fitted shirts or tailored suits and bow ties. But one can still manage to dress-up any casual outfit into something totally comfy, totally chic ! And just like that, athleisure was born ;)

When traveling to colder destinations, I opt for jogger pants, a basic white tee, sports bra and a cozy coat that'll get me from the airport to my hotel room, safe and sound (and warm!). When I'm heading down South, I usually go for dark leggings, a matching sports bra (no top needed!) and a light coat/vest just 'cause hey, you ain't hanging around in your living room all by yourself. Dare to bare some skin but don't go overboard with it ! Sneakers are mandatory at all times.

Of course, I always throw an extra shirt or sweater in my carry-on in case of unexpected layovers. Keep in mind that an overnight stop in Chicago on your way to Miami will be an absolute nightmare with nothing but gym clothes on ;) #truestory

In-Flight Beauty

Let's be honest, traveling by plane is much more glamorous on social media than in reality ;) It doesn't always have to be though ! My best tip to actually look rested upon arrival is to pack a small pouch filled with travel size beauty essentials that you can pull out of your handbag at any time, when needed. My in-flight beauty routine always involves a thermal water spay to refresh my skin and prevent dehydration, under-eye masks or an eye cream to avoid puffiness around the eye area, facial cleansing wipes, a daily moisturizer, an uber-hydrating and lip balm, BB cream for that I-slept-8-hours-straight glow, tooth brush & paste, deodorant, fast absorbing hand cream and my favourite fragrance.

Some people get all hesitant and shy when it comes to beauty prepping on board, but I say, what the hell ! No one actually cares about my on-the-go beauty regimen and worst case scenario, they might find it amusing. As amusing as they'll look like when deplaning with a dull skin, bags under their eyes and messy hair like they don't care (they actually do!). Hey, I'm kidding here ! Almost ;)

Carry-On

When traveling, my carry-on bag is like the second most important thing I bring along on board (the first one being my passport, duh!). I try to fit in there, everything that I need to use on a daily basis such as my laptop or iPad, HD camera, chargers and adapters, spare clothing, Advil's, my personal phone and my work phone, my wallet, travel size cosmetics, snacks and travel documents. Think of your carry-on as the one and only thing you'll have access to if anything were to happen; delays, cancelled flights, overnight layover, emergency landing, baggage loss… This (scary!) thought only should get you covered ;)

Weekender: Kailey's Monogram Shop | Sandals: Sole Society | Panama Hat: Sole Society
Passeport

Only the most important thing you can think of when traveling international. Losing your passport would basically be like losing your identity and God knows how immigration departments LOVE knowing exactly every single detail about yourself ;) Joking aside, it can actually save you (and your Embassy!) an incredible amount of problems to simply store you passport somewhere safe and to always have accurate knowledge of where it is. One of the best things I have done to bring some awareness to myself was to get a passport holder. It makes my I.D. easy to spot, easy to carry-around and prevents it from getting dirty or all squished.

Quick and easy (and jail time free!).

Prior to any trip, I always make sure to stop by my bank to buy foreign currency as they generally offer the lowest buying rate. Having some extra cash on hand is always a good idea as many airport amenities, from vending machines, to SmartCarts, to shuttles and taxis, won't necessarily let you pay by card. Plus, the currency exchange desk at the airport will charge you the craziest fees to convert your money !

Also, if you plan on using your credit card abroad, remember to call you credit institution to let them know international transactions are going to be made. This will keep them from blocking your account as a safety measure, and have you call them all the way from your travel destination to fix it up.

Snacks

And last but not least, airport food is probably the most exciting part about traveling (the actual 'traveling' part!) if you ask me ;) Depending on which airport you depart from, arrive at, connect from, the culinary opportunities and endless and very often, amazing ! Guys, I kid you not. As a matter of fact, I happen to have had the best fish & chips at Heathrow, the most delightful waffles and sugar at Brussel's, unbelievable jerk chicken and sweet plantain at Sangster International and mouth watering southern fried chicken at, yup!, Hartsfield-Jackson.

Nowadays, almost every airline company offer complementary snacks on board but I would recommend double-checking and making sure your's does. If not, just make a quick stop at your gate's closet Café to re-stock on fuel; you never know when you'll get a mid-flight craving ! If you prefer to purchase food on board, remember to keep cash (in the right currency!) or a credit card available.

If you are boarding a 5-hours+ flight, chances are you will get a full-on three courses meal on board therefore, you don't necessarily need to bother grabbing snacks prior to departure; airplane food is pretty filling I find. But hey, your call !
