André Bryson - Guerrilla - Emerging Fashion Designers at NYFW

For those of you who may not be familiar with the term, Guerrilla is the name given to irregular military combatants, like a 'Resistance' army; not an official army... In my correspondence with the designer André Bryson he tells me that these 60's 70's silhouettes are a reference inspired by the tensions of the day, both in the USA; and tensions in the UK epitomised by the Mods and Rockers. Clearly André sides with the Mods on the style front. And quoting Bryson directly "Only the five primary colors (black, white, red, yellow and blue) I wanted to express that every color known to man is derived from these five colors in hope to bring unity to this collection as a complete story." I suspect the colours chosen also represent a message of unity in more than just the designs. My photos are of some of the highlights from the Guerrilla range, shown with Bracé Designers Emergent De la Mode NYFW at The Stewart Hotel, NYC September 2017.

I love the blocked colours and bold stripes, patch pockets and windowpane broken-checks, black with white or white with black, playing with positive/negative combinations. The innovative Nehru jacket as an open-front blouse with a scarf or pussy bow tied at the collar, a personal favourite of mine. Curiously, weeks later I saw similar concepts being sent down the runway in my news feeds from the Paris shows.. Weeks later.. Bryson seems to have the zeitgeist a fashion designer needs on his side. Curvy Girl Fashion Outfits - Tips For Ladies

With the rise of full-figured models, there has been a sudden surge of appreciation for the curvier aspects of feminine beauty. Curves are to be embraced, celebrated, and accessorized—not hidden!

From mini dresses to chic tunics, Pink Lily has cute outfits for curvy women that follow the most up-to-date runway fashion trends. The outfits we offer show you how this season’s trends, colors, and styles can flatter your body and express your personality.

Dress for Your Body

While many styles for curvy girls were once shapeless, clothing designers are now working to create cuts that flatter the variety of curvy shapes. Learn about which cuts and embellishments are the best styles for a curvy figure with Pink Lily!

Pear Shape

If you have a pear or triangle shaped body, try to find a way to visually extend your neck and shoulders with a scoop, v-neck, or sweetheart line. Since your bust is smaller, highlight it with extra details like pleats or ruffles. Accentuate your waist with belts and empire silhouettes, and choose pencil skirts, A-line dresses, and wrap around styles.

Hourglass

An hourglass body generally has shoulders and hips that are the same size. The best styles for this curvy figure are ruffles and soft drapes, as well as open collars and asymmetrical cuts. Fit and flare shapes will fit the hourglass body well and fitted tops ensure that the upper body is accentuated.

Oval Shape

When you have an oval shape, you need to elongate your body with a low neckline. Choose cowl, scoop, or v-neck cuts to flatter your upper body. Do the same for your waist with ‘peak' empire waistlines, princess seams, and faux wrap dresses. Balance your lower body with dropped waist pants or skirts with high slits.

Rectangle

Rectangle bodies require you to create a waist and accentuate your chest. Use the sweetheart, asymmetric, jewel, and cowl necklines to highlight your femininity. You can also embellish your top with curve defining bodices and ruched and frilled tops. Wear belts to fabricate a waist and add slightly flared leg pants to create the illusion of a curved shape.
Bold Patterns and Colors Stripes and floral designs were all heavily represented on the runways this year, so embracing this year’s celebration of bold colors and fun patterns is essential for every fashion-obsessed woman.

When adding to your collection of cute outfits for curvy women, find pieces that create contrast between dark colors and bright patterns to create an eye-drawing outfit that will earn compliments every time.

Stay cool with Pink Lily’s What I Live For Damask Mini, where contemporary styling meets classic beauty, with a nod to the sophisticated tea parties of yesteryear. The neon pink damask pattern paired on a black background evokes a sophisticated outfit that looks amazing on the curvy woman. Since this mini dress accentuates the waist and minimizes the chest with a patterned bottom and a plain top, this dress is one of the best styles for a curvy figure.

Accessorize the scoop neck with a statement necklace to draw attention to your face and add a couple of bracelets to complete the look. Slip into your favorite wedges and you’ll be ready for a night out with the girls, or opt for flats to fabricate a look that’s perfect for a casual lunch date.

Cut and Shape

Cut and shape are important parts of a piece that ensure your clothing hugs you in all the right places. The mini dress is cut in a way that accentuates your legs, balancing your body and making you look taller. This is definitely one of the best styles for the curvy figure! This style of dress lends itself to more casual events, like summer barbecues and strolls on the beach.

In addition to its flattering cut, the Count on Me Mini plays with this season’s love of bright pastels. The shallow pockets add an adorable detail to this dress and embellishes a simple cut without adding bulk. Both the top and bottom pieces are unlined to keep you cool throughout the day.

Add a fashionable floppy hat in coral or straw for sunny summer days and delicate gold jewelry to subtly highlight the outfit. Pair this dress with all of your favorite summer shoes—from gladiator sandals to height-enhancing wedges. As the weather cools, add a pair of leggings and booties for additional warmth and keep rocking your mini.

For more formal events, a longer skirt or dress—like the maxi dress—is also one of the best styles for a curvy figure. A dress with an A-line waist that skims your figure, instead of hugging it, lengthens your torso and balances the upper and lower body.

Our Holdin On to Something Maxi is appropriate for both dressy and casual events—it fulfills all of the requirements for the perfect curvy piece! Flowy and fabulous, the soft drape flows over your curves without squeezing, ensuring your comfort and elegance. Wearing your maxi with wedges or heels will keep the hemline pristine and lengthen your legs. A few bangles and subtle earrings embellish your look while keeping your silhouette clean and curvy.

Warm and Cozy Maxis
At Pink Lily, we firmly believe that the maxi dress can be worn even after the summer solstice. To let all maxi lovers wear their favorite dress well into the autumn season, we offer a maxi with a three-quarter length sleeve for cooler days and evenings.

The Over My Head Maxi has a classic chevron pattern and soft colors that complement any shape. It can also be worn to any event, making it one of the best styles for a curvy figure. For an extra sizzle, wear a wide belt to highlight your waist and separate your upper and lower body. Adding a thin cardigan or wrap around sweater will supply the extra warmth you need without adding bulk to your outfit. Wearing fleece-lined ankle leggings under this dress is another way to stay warm without compromising style or elegance.

Autumn Tops
As we move into fall and winter weather, shirts and pants are essential to stay warm. Instead of boring basic tops, add interest to your wardrobe with a stylish tunic. Tunics are somewhere between a dress and a shirt, meaning they have the same versatility as dresses and look great on any curvy shape.

A charcoal side button tunic from Pink Lily has a modern asymmetrical cut to emphasize the waist and balance the hips and shoulders. Pair this tunic with leggings and heeled boots for an elegant ensemble or wear it with skinny jeans and booties for a casual look. Grab a black quilted clutch and some delicate, colorful jewelry to accessorize.

Men's Fashion Tips For Body Types - 15 Rules.

Here are 15 Quick Fashion tips:

1. Fit is King
The most dramatic improvement you can make in your style is to make sure everything fits impeccably. Most guys wear clothes that are too large. Make sure everything you wear is almost hugging the shape of your body – without being tight. Bad fit is an epidemic. We call it “Bad Fit Disease”.

2. Keep it simple
You want a wardrobe that looks great on you, but don’t overdo it. Don’t wear more than three pieces of jewelry or more than three colors. Don’t dress like a rock star unless you’re in a band. If you want to be flashy, a simpler but stylish look would be sporting a black striped dress shirt with a white blazer, a dark pair of jeans, a dressy belt, and your sharpest dress shoes. You could also add a flashy watch or a simple accessory like an interesting necklace, but nothing more. Check out out our article on basics to refresh yourself on what are essential wardrobe items.

3. Change the way you see casual C
asual doesn’t have to be boring. Have fun with collared shirts, or take some inspiration from those who approach casual a bit differently.

4. Pay attention to your supporting pieces
Some sweaters are lean and others are big and chunky. The first rule of thumb is that your top and bottom halves need to match. If you’re wearing a big, chunky, rugged fisherman knit sweater, your bottom needs to be rugged, too. Don’t wear a fisherman’s sweater with a beautiful silk-and-wool suit pant. Instead, wear it with something as casual as cargos or jeans, or dress it up with a Harris tweed blazer.

5. Never go shopping alone
Most of the time, it’s tough to trust the sales people because they usually work for commission. Shop with a friend who will give you their honest opinion. Also, read about shopping on a budget.

6. Stay a notch above
Don’t overdo it to a fault, but dare to take some risks. It’s always better to be a little bit overdressed than underdressed in any setting. All you have to do is think about where and who you’re going to be with and just step it up one notch. But make sure you’re not better dressed than someone who is more important in a certain setting, like your boss. 7. Never underestimate the power of details – The last thing on is usually the first thing noticed. So mind the details instead of throwing together the main parts of your outfit. “Details” can include a scarf, a subtle pocket square, or the way you tie your tie knot.

8. Invest in a superb pair of shoes
If it’s one thing that women will notice, it’s your shoes. Especially how clean and sharp they look. It’s easy to wash and press the rest of your clothes to keep them looking new, but most guys disregard their shoes. Show that you’re a man of taste by getting a great pair of shoes and keeping them in pristine condition.

9. Fashion Tees with logos
When you’re going around with a big logo on your shirt, you risk looking like a walking billboard. Lose the lame Coca-Cola shirt and go for a classic v-neck tee or something artsy (check out threadless.com).

10. Disregard trends
Beware of buying something just because it’s “in” right now – stick to what you truly like. A lot of people rush to get in on the latest trend and end up with a bunch of clothes they don’t wear. It’s better to learn to build a versatile and timeless wardrobe first – then bring in your own twists with some of the new fashion. This one tip will save you so much money! Read up on our compiled list of 40 Common Men’s Fashion Mistakes for extra info.

11. Don’t be a sucker for brand names
Don’t be a Patrick Bateman. Before you decide to purchase an item, ask yourself if you are buying it simply because of the brand name or because you love the quality and style. Ask yourself,  “Would I buy this if there was no logo on it?” Check out our article on how to look designer for less.

12. Continually cultivate your image
Invest more time and money into your image. Cultivate your fashion sense. Your style is a huge mode of communication, and is worth caring for as much as your education, career, and relationships. Sign up for our free crash course on knowing your own style. Oscar Schoffler, longtime fashion editor of Esquire once said, “Never underestimate the power of what you wear. After all, there’s just a small bit of yourself sticking out at the collar and cuff. The rest of the world sees what you drape on your frame.”

13. Ask for real feedback
Most of your friends and family aren’t going to go out of their way to tell you what looks bad. You have to ask for it. In fact, ask anyone and everyone you trust to tell you the truth. Ask your hairstylist, ask your best friend, ask your mother!

14. Upgrade your shave
Even if your fashion is golden, an unkempt beard can be an attraction killer. Achieve a perfect shave by trying a shave brush & old-fashioned double-edged razor.

15. Experiment with style
The only way you’ll really learn, is if you go out there and try new things. I make an effort to try something completely out of my comfort zone whenever I’m at a store – many times you’ll end up loving something you never thought you would. If you make mistakes, life goes on. So many guys are afraid to express themselves through their style, don’t be one of them. Check out our article on how to put an outfit together.

Reasons Why You Should Dress Up Everyday

There are so many reasons why you should dress well every day, no matter what you're doing or where you're going.  Nobody likes waking up early and having to plan a cute outfit. But dressing well can be so rewarding and really change your day and mood.
All too often, I get the question, “Why are you so dressed up?” And honestly, I often do not have an answer. - See more at: http://www.hercampus.com/school/illinois/top-10-reasons-dress-every-day#sthash.YRCsgxF3.dpuf

Since when did it become an unusual thing to put effort into what you wear and have fun with fashion? Since when is anyone not wearing sweatpants and a hoodie breaking unwritten social rules? Why should “dressing up” be reserved for special occasions only? Here are some excellent reasons why to dress well, explaining why you should but put in the extra effort to look your best every day.

  • Because life’s too short to blend in. Don’t settle for average.
  • Because you only live once so why not feel like a princess every day?
  • It Makes a Good Impression, When you look good, people notice.
  • It Will Help You Stand Out, express yourself and dress up, it really does make you stand out against everyone who doesn’t put in the effort. Fashion is a method of self expression. What are you trying to say?
  • Because you never know who you’ll run into.
  • Because you deserve to look your best at all times.
  • Because cute clothes and accessories are a great conversation starter. Wear something fabulous and people will ask you where you got it.
  • Because parties aren’t the only time to celebrate.
  • Because that fabulous party dress in your closet cost too much to only be worn once.
  • Because it’s fun!
  • Because if you’ve got it (great style, killer confidence, amazing legs), it’s just wrong not to flaunt it.
  •  Because glamour isn’t only reserved for the rich and famous, even though maybe they’d like you to believe it is.
  • Because nothing beats the rush you feel when you look in the mirror and LOVE what you see.
  • Because you want to. That’s the only reason that matters.

Why do YOU dress up?

What do you think? Do you make an effort to dress up every day? What inspires you to put effort into your look? Tell me what you think by leaving a comment.

Women Fashion Power exhibition at the Design Museum

Zaha Hadid's Prada cape

Fashion has finally come out of the closet in a fantastic new exhibition at the Design Museum.
Women Fashion Power includes interviews and outfits donated by 26 high-flying business women arrived at via a 'corridor of power' containing paintings of historical figures, such as, Joan of Arc and Boudicca, as well as photographs and quotes from those who didn't take part, like Hillary Clinton and Angela Merkel. Contributors include Natalie Massanet, architect Zaha Hadid (who designed the exhibition), Human Rights lawyer and director of Liberty Shami Chakrabati and broadcaster Kirsty Wark.

Camilla Batmanghelidjh the founder of the children's charity Kids Company loaned the multi-coloured dress created by Magbule Mulla (above). Next to it, is one of my favourite outfits (the Georges Rech black blazer and pants and stripy silk scarf), belonging to Anne Hidalgo the current Mayor of Paris and first woman to hold office in the French capital, who also opened the exhibition. C'est chic, non?

From the Suffragettes to Katharine Hamnett's Protest and Survive, the exhibition offers highlights from 150 years of the women's movement, alongside key fashion moments. And yes, a lot of this stuff we've seen before, but Women Fashion Power is presented in a way that feels quite fresh and celebratory. I had chance to have a quick chat with co-curator Donna Loveday about the exhibition,
'For a long time, dress in the workplace was thought of as frivolous but now we have more choice over what we wear to work and we feel freer to express ourselves through our clothes. Women USE fashion in their professional working lives. I think this is incredibly empowering and sends out a really positive message.'

Influential business women discuss how they feel about fashion and how fashion makes them feel. The 31-year-old chartered mechanical engineer Morwenna Wilson chose a Carven map print jacket and explained, 'Jackets are very important to me because I am petite and a woman, yet one with responsibility and authority working in a male dominated industry, often with a team of people older than me.'

Women Fashion Power is proof (not that we needed any) that clothes matter and it's OK to talk about them seriously. This is an exhibition for fans of fashion and feminism - because we know now that the two can exist together.

Women Fashion Power is on at the Design Museum, Shad Thames, London SE1 until 26 April 2015. And I know what I'll be wearing to the beach next summer...

Today's Everyday Fashion: Dress Pants

Inspiration: Refinery29

Dress pants are not my favorite. When I worked in an office in Boston, I would wear jeans during cold weather whenever humanly possible. That's why this inspiration photo caught my eye - because she makes dress pants look so cute! I tried my own blend of neutrals and textured winter fabrics with brown wool pants (see how I wore them last year), a navy wool jacket, gray sweater and cognac shoes and belt. I love finding a way to wear dress pants that feels sophisticated and fun at the same time. How do you wear dress pants?

How Kate Bosworth’s White Dress Continued the Time’s Up Movement at the Critics’ Choice Awards

Kate Bosworth gave us a very glamorous behind-the-scenes look at how she got ready for Thursday’s Critics’ Choice Awards, where she arrived with husband Michael Polish by her side.

The awards show highlighted Kate at her capital F fashion best, but there was way more to her look than you'd think at first glance. On the red carpet, Bosworth told InStyle why, specifically, she wore her white lace Brock Collection dress as a way of responding to the Time’s Up movement and all of the stars who wore black at the 2018 Golden Globes.

“What I think is so powerful that came out of that was the idea of hope, and light, and optimism, and positivity, and we discussed that as being expressed in the dress,” she told us. “I just wanted to feel the light of what was captured last weekend. Then they say after the dark comes the light.”

The flower on her dress, which rests at her hip, also had an important message. “This dress reminded me of a very modern suffragette dress; if you had a pin here it could very well express that in a modern way. I love that though it’s covered in classical, you can see the boning and so the expression of feminism to me was interesting in this dress,” she said.

You'd know well by now that I'm all about high-necks and loose fits, but something about this dress caught my eye on Popcherry while spending the coupon they kindly offered me. The store is jam-packed with plenty of alternatives from labels like Cameo, Keepsake and Finders Keepers, so if you don't have a pretty penny to splurge on them I highly recommend checking Popcherry out. The lovely people over there give you free express shipping within Australia and NZ while international shipping is available as well - and, I don't recall seeing a thing in their store over $50... just saying.

I think my friends will be happy to know that I'll be making more appearances this winter... especially since I'm now equipped with thick, long sleeves to guard me from hypothermia (and the fact that I've just finished all classes and assignments for my degree so I'm just excited to see humans).

Today's Everyday Fashion: Skirt Trick

Inspiration: Nasty Gal
Same dress x 4

I wore this for a speaking engagement in Tallahassee yesterday! (It was for my VISIT FLORIDA gig.) I was craving the cobalt skirt + necklace combo, and Dalmatian print felt like the perfect print to combine it with. I only have a Dalmatian dress, and while I love wearing dresses as tops, this is the first time I've tried one with a fitted pencil skirt (I usually go for a fuller skirt, like so). The dress adds some warmth, and also gets rid of any hints of VPL, but it made my skirt a bit tighter and I had to make sure the dress stayed in position throughout the day. In the end, I could hardly tell I was wearing a dress and I don't think anyone would've ever guessed, so it's a trick I plan to try again. Do you ever wear dresses as shirts?

FEELING FESTIVE

Though I love Holiday season in general, dressing up is definitely one of my favorite parts! Yet, with so many different events, parties, get-togethers and mixers to attend, choosing what to wear, can get a bit frustrating! So, I though it would be fun do a post covering a few different functions like a casual work party or a family get-together for example, girls night out and finally, a dressier, date-night type occasion.

CASUAL PARTY:
For me, Holiday dressing doesn't automatically imply getting super dressed up! Take festive outerwear for example, a beautiful plaid jacket in a signature Holiday black and red color combo captures the spirit of the season without looking too formal! Perfect for any casual function, not only does it look great but it will also keep you warm and cozy for the rest of the season:) For today's look, I paired my red checked moto jacket with all black pieces and accessories to really make it the focal point of this look! Fun little finishing touch, an oversized plaid blanket scarf to make that red really pop!

GIRLS NIGHT OUT:
A little fun, a little edgy and sexy, a feathered skirt and a tailored blazer are a match made in fashion heaven and a great alternative to a little black dress! Aside from my general love of separates, what makes this particular feather mini & fitter blazer so great is their versatility. You can pair this mini with tailored pieces like I've done for today's look or wear it with a slouchy turtleneck sweater and boots for a slightly more casual vibe. And the same can be said about the blazer! Dress it up with tailored bottoms or down with a pair of jeans and cute loafers. Basically, the possibilities are endless! For today's outfit, I was going for a really dressy, polished look, so I added strappy heels, a fun gold clutch and some beautiful layered jewels in gold.

DATE NIGHT:
Dresses are my achilles heel, and fun, sequin number are my ultimate weakness, especially for the Holidays!:) Love the way sequins catches the light, sparkles and shines in a beautiful rainbow of colors! Once again, a great alternative to a little black dress, sequin dresses add that perfect dose of glitz and glamour and create a really strong impact. Because they are such a statement piece, I prefer to pair them with really simple accessories so that they don't take away from the dress. A cute pair of heels and a simple clutch is really all you need to shine! Finishing touch? A few layered rings, red lips and tousled waves! And voila! A perfect date-night look!
