Why the World is Gravitating to Sid Neigum’s Golden Ratio

Following an introduction from Vogue Arabia, Fashion Forward invited award-winning Canadian designer Sid Neigum to showcase his Spring 2018 collection at Fashion Forward‘s tenth season at d3, Dubai. Canada may not be internationally renowned as a fashion hub, but it’s been churning out talent that has found success overseas—BOF‘s Imran Amed, Tank‘s Caroline Issa, editor Joe Zee, and photographer (and singer) Bryan Adams to name a few. And with homegrown designers like Beaufille and Sid Neigum making waves, the Great North’s talent is taking a large leap across the proverbial pond to showcase in the desert.

In a few short years, the Sid Neigum label—architectural, experimental, and androgynous—has been building steam and quickly. (It’s now sold on Net-a-Porter and Farfetch.) Backstage, Neigum spoke of  math as his starting point, specifically the golden ratio. Frequently found in nature, when used in design, this mathematical proportion creates an eye-pleasing effect.

Opening looks featured navy, blush, and gray viscose separates in loose, flowing fabric. The focus here was on line and proportion with a few surprises in the form of knots and hardware accents: a small chain featured on the hip of a minimalist skirt and a metal ring cinching trousers and the fabric on a black sweater. For women who have shied away from body piercings, on clothes, Neigum shifts the look from grunge to elevated, avant-garde.

The motion climaxed with the reveal of ethereal silk blouses and dresses shaped to ensconce the body like a delicate cocoon. No doubt, Dame Zaha Hadid would have loved it.

Sid Neigum is sold on Netaporter.com, Farfetch.com, and at Boutique 1 in the Middle East.

Off the shoulder trend - Spring/Summer, inspiration looks & must haves

Yet another '90s trend is making its way into fashion for summer.  The chic top every stylish girl is wearing right now - Off the shoulder tops (and dresses).  It's the perfect mix of edgy, sexy, and sophisticated.

Apart from the fact that exposing your shoulders is a lot more forgiving than exposing your stomach or upper thighs, its a lot more sexier...  Move over crop tops, there’s a new body part in town. It’s a flirtatious cut that shows just the right amount of skin and feels right on trend.  Off the shoulder tops have a romantic, laid back vibe, and no matter what body shape or size you have you can pair it with pretty much anything you have in your closet, high waist trousers, skinny jeans and denim cutoffs, to midi skirts.  From boho chic, to crisp clean lines, you can created easy breezy outfits to rock all summer long.

When selecting an off the shoulder style, the top should fit your shoulders and bust seamlessly to prevent any mishaps.  The material around your upper arms can fit either loosely (if the body of the dress or top is secure around your waist) or tightly for a more structured look.

You can wear your hair down slightly messy in those beach waves, or pull it up in a messy ponytail/bun and expose the shoulders.

Jewellery wise thin necklaces, layered or not, look fabulous with off the shoulder tops or dresses, and body jewellery is perfect for a sheer or cropped off the shoulder top.

Wardrobe Staple: Denim Jackets

WEAR YOUR FAVOURITE JEAN JACKET ALL YEAR LONG

A denim jacket has been an essential part of my wardrobe for as long as I can remember. I can’t imagine trying to dress for spring and fall without it. A denim jacket is a basic wardrobe staple which makes every outfit look totally differently. That's a very versatile piece, as you can wear it over a laid-back sweatshirt, plain white cotton tee, denim pants, wear with simple long necklace, or you can go for a girlish and chic look, wearing cocktail dress and sparkling, trendy accessories.

Thanks to its versatility and practicality, you can wear it for various events, day or night. Denim jackets are hailed as an essential for your casual wardrobe, and if you haven’t quite figured out the various ways of styling this outerwear staple, here are a few awesomely simple ideas:

Personally, I like a denim jacket that is slightly cropped and has some shaping through the waist area. The piece can easily be layered up to combat the cold or left open and loose to sit as a comfortable top layer in a spring ensemble.

Just like jeans, denim jackets come in all shades of blue. (And other colours, although blue is definitely the most common.) A jacket in a medium wash denim is the most versatile and can be dressed up or down. If you're looking for "smarter" autumn and winter jacket, try a dark wash. Due to the darker colour, they usually look more polished.

You can wear double denim, but it definitely comes with a warning note. Make sure the tones of blue are different, so you are not matchy-matchy. It also helps if your top is longer in-between so it breaks up the denim.

Pair it with a white lace dress and boots to put a classic boho touch on a feminine look or To make your denim jacket more fancy, you can wear it with sequins and heels. It’s a fun mix for going out.

Make a maxi dress work for spring or fall by wearing it with a cropped denim jacket or Paired with a turtleneck and a maxi skirt, your jean jacket can easily give your outfit a ’70s vibe.

Pair your denim jacket with stripes, plaid shirts, and colourful pants – any of them is a classic spring look.

A classic denim jacket hits at hip length, which is ideal for pairing with jeans or pants, since it won't cut you off at the waist. A cropped denim jacket is a good choice if you want to wear it with skirts and dresses, as the shorter length visually raises your waist and elongates your legs. Just don't go too short, as it can look a little dated! Ideally, the hem will hit right around your belly button.

Comfort is key. You want your jacket to be tran-seasonal and have enough room to layer underneath. If you are always on the run, picking up kids or chasing the dog, ideally choose a jacket that has a touch of stretch (elastane) in the fabric.
