At 'Circus' by Wendy Sharpe, King on William Gallery.

At 'Circus' by Wendy Sharpe, King on William Gallery. I have always, always, always, wanted to do some circus photographs though sadly until last Wednesday night I have never had the opportunity. So thank you Wendy for adding to the joy of your circus paintings real live circus performances as well. of course it can be difficult to quiet down an opening night art crowd to let them know something special, not-just-speeches is about to happen; and it helps if you have a friend with a bling'd out eye patch (whom I have often wanted to photograph too) to help bring the jubilant crowd under control!  Great night, a beautiful show and fab fun performances. It's just no one said anything about Pirates! Read on below for my news about Art and About & 'Australian Life' too!

On other opening night notes, last night was the launch of the 'Australian Life' photography competition which is also part of Art and About. My photograph of three lovely Sydney ladies taken at the Billich Gallery 30th anniversary party was chosen as one of 22 finalists from a record field of 1300 entries! The competition and the 10k prize was won by my friend Jon Lewis who has been documenting Sydney life (and elsewhere as well) in his unique fashion since the 70s and 80s, and has certainly been a positive influence and guide for my photography. Congratulations Jon! And as we walked back to Darlinghurst after the launch there was more, Sydney's newly restored, Iconic Coca-Cola sign was finally switched on, lit up and back in action, a neon beacon leading us home. A great night, a great week. use the links to discover more!

Twenty Pictures of Cyclists Commuting on Boulevard du Palais Paris

Peak Cycling in Paris - Get on ya Bike!

Cycling in Paris? Well sadly I admit I did not manage to straddle a saddle and go cycling through Paris myself, although I certainly would have liked to. Although I have not had a bike for the last few years - insert sad face - cycling has been my primary form of transport for most of my life; so it was with much interest and both a cyclist and a photographers eye that I  paid considerable attention to the style of bikes I saw being ridden and the personal style of many of the people I saw riding those bikes. And as a rider from Australia where cyclists are sadly viewed as a menace, road-kill and potential cash-cow.. it was truly great to see the wide cross-section of people choosing a bike as their means of transport to get from point A to point B. It's also nice to see people free to ride without a helmet - I read recently that many European countries have introduced a law where if there is an accident between a car and bicycle the driver of the car is automatically at fault; which is the opposite of the law here in Australia I believe. Perhaps this is one of the reasons people can ride without fear for their safety; though having competitive cycling as the #2 sport throughout Europe I think means your average Madame and Monsieur are very bike aware anyway. It seems too that age is no barrier to getting on your bike, nor is fashion a problem, wear what you like. The bikes? I must say I was happy to see what I took to be an inordinate number of vintage 1980's frame sets; it seems you can't beat an Iron Horse after all. Of course the 20,000 Vélib bikes certainly made their presence felt too and next time I am in Paris; I will certainly be taking one for a spin. So here you are, 20 views of cyclists commuting along Boulevard du Palais just after 6 pm, 28°C while I enjoyed a lazy beer at L'annexe - I didn't even rise from my café chair to get the shots! If only things could be so civilised back home.

Americans in Paris...VOUELLE

Just as a wedding begins a union of 2 people, a wedding was also the reason that these 2 expats met and began a shoe business known as VOUELLE. Melissa Regan (de Vogele) and Michelle Boor teamed up in Paris after the former had a miserable experience with the selection and ultimate decision of wedding shoes. Besides the dress, well maybe and the groom, shoes remain an essential and integral part of one’s wedding day.

Well, that was 2008, and within the 2 short years of being in business, these 2 have created the burgeoning brand (VOUELLE) which is already available at 66 in Paris, Galleries Lafayette, The Wynn in Las Vegas and Harvey Nich’s as Edina from Absolutely Fabulous would say. The look of the shoes might echo better known brands such as Roger Vivier, Walter Steiger and even Jimmy Choo, but these are not “me too” styles, these are exclusively designed for and by VOUELLE. One can only draw the references when they are all shown together in a shoe salon. VOUELLE is in good company with these prestige brands and the handmade VOUELLE shoes are a welcomed addition to the couture shoe market as these existing brands shoes tend to be far more costly and seem to be on every foot as if they were from H & M.

Quality will always reign supreme, no matter what business one owns, when you cater to the top tier of international retailers. To assure the high standard, these ladies were fortunate enough to enlist the help of Alain Mancini, who is heir to shoe royalty, Rene Mancini. In shoe terms, he is “an old shoe dog” if there ever was one and I am not referring to age.

Please make sure that you visit the website www.vouelle.com as well as on Facebook and have a tease of the beauty and COMFORT that is available…..without giving up one ounce of fashion glamour.
