Head(ing) On into Art & Photography April/May 2016

OK I did ask the dumbest question of Jerrard Seng about his work, Me: "did you Photoshop yourself into all these landscapes" Jerrard: "No I took them all with a remote". Believe that or not; his show 'The Space Between' at m2 Gallery of selfies in incredible Icelandic landscapes seems a very NOW approach to art photography; a bit like Instagram on Steroids on the wall - and bigger! There was a bit of a crush by the time I arrived but I heard it was even more packed earlier, no wonder it was a bit quiet (comparatively speaking) at China Heights, where KNIGHTMARE by French was taking place fusing a gothicy art with the latest trend in street fashion, embroidered patches (and buttons-we already knew), or so Bloglovin had informed me only that very morning! continues below..

There was certainly no shortage of funky styling at any of the shows and the still-warm weather seems to be making things more like a spring night out not at all winter approaching.

I'm just going to put it right out there. This is the most original art photography show I have seen in quite a while; I don't know how he make the images (it's a silver halide based traditional process) and I don't really care; what's interesting is the fusing of the political economy as a subject and the graph as a photographic object, or you can just enjoy them as photo based abstractions. I thought they were brilliant!

Well there's at least two cowboy shows at Head On this year;  Claire Letitia Reynolds's 'Lonely Cowboys' at Central Park which I am yet to see and Marley Marco Pasinetti, 'The "8" Second Ride' at ArtSHINE Gallery. Just around the corner in Chippendale and well supported by his friends on opening night. I popped my head into the big do Saturday night at aMBUSH Central Park, but I must say I find art exhibited on that scale somewhat daunting. So it was nice to then find myself for the first time in the more intimate ArtSHINE space for Marley's first solo show. Great eye, lovely compositions, check it out before or after visiting the big festival splash up at aMBUSH.

André Bryson - Guerrilla - Emerging Fashion Designers at NYFW

For those of you who may not be familiar with the term, Guerrilla is the name given to irregular military combatants, like a 'Resistance' army; not an official army... In my correspondence with the designer André Bryson he tells me that these 60's 70's silhouettes are a reference inspired by the tensions of the day, both in the USA; and tensions in the UK epitomised by the Mods and Rockers. Clearly André sides with the Mods on the style front. And quoting Bryson directly "Only the five primary colors (black, white, red, yellow and blue) I wanted to express that every color known to man is derived from these five colors in hope to bring unity to this collection as a complete story." I suspect the colours chosen also represent a message of unity in more than just the designs. My photos are of some of the highlights from the Guerrilla range, shown with Bracé Designers Emergent De la Mode NYFW at The Stewart Hotel, NYC September 2017.

I love the blocked colours and bold stripes, patch pockets and windowpane broken-checks, black with white or white with black, playing with positive/negative combinations. The innovative Nehru jacket as an open-front blouse with a scarf or pussy bow tied at the collar, a personal favourite of mine. Curiously, weeks later I saw similar concepts being sent down the runway in my news feeds from the Paris shows.. Weeks later.. Bryson seems to have the zeitgeist a fashion designer needs on his side. Love his designs? You can contact him directly via his instagram below. For more shots, just scroll down!

ANY STEP MBFWA Raffles International Showcase 2015

Oh Bondage - Up Yours!

Well actually the range is called HEROINE SS 2015/16 and it is Amazonian princesses meets late night bondage club all of which reminds me of going to the Beat club in Brisbane back in the early 80s... or even more so, Black Market in Sydney later on (though real B&D has never been very attractive to me). I do like the playful dress-up elements in this range; perhaps more inspired by Malcolm Mclaren and doyen of British fashion Vivienne Westwood who's shop SEX, was pretty much to-the-point and where it all got started as (Punk) fashion from fetish. And here we are, we have come a long way; certainly rebellion is prettier this time around. The designers of ANY STEP by Amy Le and Stephanie McGuigan have just shown at China Graduate Fashion Week #CGFW in Beijing, so time I thought to get my shots of this range off the hard drive and up online. I hope you enjoy the show; gold-lamé leggings on suspender straps.. I certainly did. Mouse over image for details.

How to Wear Serenity: One of Pantone’s Colour of the Year

Serenity - I think we all know it best as baby blue, is one of the two selected Pantone's colour of the year.  I have a strange relationship to blue.  When people put colours in front of me and ask me which ones I am drawn to, nine times out of ten I will choose blue, no matter what shade it is.

Serenity blue can be a challenge to style (as it is a pastel), especially if you tend to be edgier with your wardrobe. A blue jacket, a blue top, dress, or skirt against any other colour looks stunning and has a quality of fresh but luxurious and quite a refined vibe to it.

If you’re not a fan of pastel hues, you may start incorporating these Pantone 2016’s colours with your accessories like bag, shoes, scarf, belt and jewellery.  Wearing Serenity coloured bag will add a pop of colour without being too dramatic or loud.

When wearing the Pantone hues in a monochromatic style, always add interest by contrasting fabrics like a lace blouse with a chiffon skirt or a knitted top with a pair of sleek pants.

Skirts, and even dress pants like culottes in Serenity look great with basic tops.  Just go for muted shades like neutrals or pastels to avoid overshadowing your Pantone palette.  This colour choice can be great for your office outfit, fancy outfit, and even casual-chic looks that call for a feminine and gentle fashion style.
