Winter Wardrobe Must Haves - Essentials For Women

We're heading into the thick of winter, and if there's one season you need to prep your wardrobe for, this is it. With the chance of polar vortexes and epic snowstorms ahead, there are a few things you need to have in your closet. Yes, you will need a warm puffer jacket and a cozy statement sweater, but we aren't all about business here, you also need a chic party dress, festive cocktail ring, luxe velvet blazer, and more. Ahead, chic winter wardrobe essentials that will cover all of your bases.

Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans are perfect for winter as their streamlined silhouette allows you to layer multiple items on top for warmth. Wear them with flat heel bootie and a leather jacket in the day or pointy toe heels and a silk drape top for a night out on the town. These go-to pants can do no wrong.

 Fedora

Although a hat might not spring to mind when thinking of winter must haves, wool or felt fedora is a great way to keep warm without sacrificing on style as this accessory can make any outfit look more put together.

Over The Knee Boots

Warm and chic – the perfect winter combination! Over the knee boots can be dressed down with jeans and a jumper for a casual daytime look or glammed up with a skirt or mini dress at night.

 Statement Coat

In winter your outerwear is the most important aspect of your wardrobe so why not make a statement? A statement coat will add a pop of colour to any neutral or all-black outfit.

 Cashmere Sweater

Nothing says off-duty chic like a cashmere crewneck sweater. This chic layering piece can be as easy to dress up as it is to dress down. This sweater looks great with a collared shirt protruding from underneath and goes with everything including midi skirts, jeans, printed trousers and leather pants.

 Knitted Jumper Dress

The easiest way to show a little leg and stay cosy at the same time is by wearing a knitted jumper dress. For added warmth, pair it with tights or pop your favourite winter coat on top, which can be removed once inside. Choose from a form fitting style or a relaxed version; you really can’t go wrong here, and a bonus is that this style looks good with most shoes.

 Leather Jacket

A leather jacket is crucial for every winter wardrobe and adds instant edge and coolness to any outfit. Toss it over your jeans and tee on the weekend or blouse and pants for the night, this jacket has the power to transform any winter outfit from drab to fab!

Ankle Boots

Ankle boots are a perennial wardrobe staple. Ever so stylish and versatile this shoe never seems to get old. Pair with a dress and tights in the day or finish off any going out look.

How to Wear an Oversize Denim Jacket

You've probably had a denim jacket in your closet for, well, forever but this season they're a little different than the ones you might have worn in the past. You know and love the slightly slouchy fit and perfectly worn-in feel of boyfriend jeans—well, now it’s time to meet the boyfriend jean jacket. The oversize lightweight layer offers a fresh spin on an old summer classic, and it can be paired with almost anything, making it a must-have piece.

If you're curious about the best way to style an oversize denim jacket, we've picked up on a few simple rules for wearing the summer staple. First, don't be afraid to wear it with jeans. In fact, many of our favorite outfits include a denim-on-denim look. Next, try rolling up the sleeves. This works especially well if you have sleeves with a cool pattern underneath. And finally, experiment with it. Try wearing it off your shoulders or in place of a top. The sky's the limit.

How to Wear a Denim Jacket

The beauty of a denim jacket or shirt is that it will retain its integrity for years to come. You are more likely to get bored of wearing it before it needs throwing away – although given its timeless look, we’re sure the former won’t happen. Although it seems as American as apple pie, denim actually has its origins in Renaissance Europe, although where specifically is unclear. Nimes seems a good bet as it explains the term ‘denim’ – derived from ‘de Nimes’ or ‘from Nimes.’

The denim jacket started as a way of re-purposing old scraps from jean manufacturing, and from these casual beginnings, we have a very casual item. However, the denim jacket is a staple piece that has more to offer than casual wear. Have a go at wearing your denim jacket under a black overcoat for a smarter twist for example. Let’s start off with a quick and easy tutorial on some introductory styling options.

It’s true that the denim jacket does fall in and out of favour. What was in during the 90s felt a bit unloved at the start of the millennium. Nonetheless, the casual number has certainly made quite a comeback – pretty much screaming East London cool casual. Wearing a nice cable knit jumper underneath your jacket and pair of tan ankle boots will give a touch of urban to a Western classic.

Leather Jacket (Worn Underneath): Karen Millen | Sleeveless Coat: Karen Millen | Scarf: Becksondergaard c/o | Jeans: Frame c/o + Similar | Trainers: Nike + Similar | Bag: Russell & Bromley Old + Similar | Hat: Similar + Similar

With all the short-haul flights I've taken this year - and the prerequisite accompanying hand luggage only - I’ve become pretty savvy at packing light. Perhaps you'll understand my excitement then at the prospect of a long-haul flight with hold luggage for NYC! Packing heavy?! Bring. It. On.

Before Ols and I left for New York, I hunted around for NY-appropriate items. I wanted to look polished, and felt that if any city was deserved of dressing up, it's New York. One store in particular came up trumps: Karen Millen. Seriously, A/W perfection! If you haven’t visited Karen Millen recently, get yourself in to a store, or online, pronto. Karen Millen have been repositioning themselves for the past few years, and I feel they’ve come full circle. They are rocking it.

Some of my favourite Karen Millen pieces right now include the much coveted sleeveless coat, this sassy disco blazer and this snake print dress, all of which came with me to NY. Each of these pieces are easy mix n’ match items, and come in colours which are both fun and Winter friendly. Disclaimer: this is not a sponsored post, I’m just genuinely head over heels for Karen Millen right now! Total #BrandCrush.

If you should find yourself in London soon, you MUST visit the Karen Millen Brompton St store. The recently revamped space is one of my favourite destination stores in London. The interiors are beautiful, and totally remind me of what a shopping experience should be - luxe but not alienating. The Brompton St store also hosts a fabulous Karen Millen Atelier where you can have certain Karen Millen items custom made, or customised. I was lucky enough to become the proud owner of one of the Brompton clutch bags which was custom dyed in an evergreen hue for me. Unfortunately the clutch service is no longer available however there are new customisable items per season, and I can whole heartedly attest to the Atelier’s quality.

OK so Karen Millen fan-girling aside. I wore this grey and blue look on our penultimate date in New York. Oli and I walked from Soho, across the Williamsburg bridge, and on into Brooklyn. The day was perfectly sunny and the wind was cuttingly cold. I honestly felt SO invigorated by our entire time in NYC, I was just grinning like a madwoman most of the time. Given that it was so freezing on our visit, and we were walking every where, I ended up wearing my Nike trainers, and the sleeveless gray Karen Millen jacket most days.

Yes, despite the large hold luggage allowance.

Now that we are back home, I am having a blast checking out all of our photos, and planning our next NY visit - we can’t wait to go back!

I’ve still got so much to share with you, but for now, I'm headed to a couple of early Christmas store events - back in London!

Have an awesome day all!

Love,
