The Dressing Room St Albans | Small Business Saturday

Hey hey! Happy Friday!
I’ve always adored the feeling of an independent retailer; boutiques, coffee shops, salons . . . it’s a charming sentiment to think that the business owner has a hand in every element of their enterprise. Both of my parents own small businesses, so I’ve had an inherent respect for business owners from day dot - it’s tough! - but on the flip side, I’ve witnessed how rewarding it can be too.

Given my love of independent stores, I was so excited to be approached to work on Small Business Saturday; an initiative focusing on small retailers, supported by American Express and others.

Mark the date in your diary guys - retailers up and down the country are partaking in Small Business Saturday tomorrow on the 6th of December, this weekend. It is my pleasure to have visited one of the lovely independent stores American Express works with - The Dressing Room in St Albans. I sat down with the boutique’s owner Deryane Tadd, for a chat about her store, and what it means to be an independent retailer.

may have squeezed in a little shop of my own too . . . !

Read on for an insight in to The Dressing Room's super inspiring business, and a peep at some of my favourite items . . .

Previous to the Small Business Saturday initiative, I’d had The Dressing Room on my radar for a while. The store stocks a number of brands which I love, including Becksondergaard, Twist & Tango and American Vintage. On my visit I learnt that The Dressing Room is in fact the official UK partner of Becksondergaard, and has the largest selection of American Vintage in the UK - they outsell Selfridges on the brand!
About to celebrate it’s 10th year in 2015, and with growth in double figures year on year (almost unheard of!!) it’s clear that The Dressing Room knows its customer inside out, and can facilitate an excellent shopping experience. On sitting down with Deryane, it was clear that her passion for retail, which began with her first shop job at 16 (!), trickles through to every element of her store. Currently The Dressing Room has sixteen employees, the majority of which are full time. This in itself surprised me; when I worked in retail myself, the staff were largely part time. I came to understand that Deryane prioritises nurturing her staff, encouraging them to build their career with The Dressing Room. This clearly pays off, the strong sense of team was palpable from the moment I walked in to the store, and Deryane reiterated how critical it is to her to have impassioned team members - the staff currently with the store are, of her own admission, the strongest she has ever had. When I asked Deryane how independent retailers differ to multi-chain stores, she reiterated the ingrained  pride, enthusiasm and customer discernment herself and other small businesses have.

In terms of the stock, The Dressing Room is an emporium of beautiful, easy to wear pieces, with just the right amount of edge. Deryane told me of her different customer tribes, all of whom are interested in purchasing pieces with longevity, but with style kudos too. Some of The Dressing Room’s customers are classically inclined, others love to tap in to current trends, and some are a bit of both! Deryane knows all of them, and the pieces they’ll like. Deryane herself was stylishly turned out when I visited the store, wearing a gorgeous Day Birger et Mikkelsen jumpsuit (which I totally want for myself!), suede ankle boots and an armful of ChloBo bangles

My favourites! The Bobbl Hats

I am no retail expert myself, but I picked up on elements of the store which really made it tick. It’s not overstocked for one - there’s a lovely sense of space. Clothing items are conveniently merchandised so it’s easy to put together outfits. For instance, need a cashmere jumper to go with your Frame skinnies? It’s right there. Oh and ASH slip ons? Again, right there. And a bobble hat for the season? Tick, tick and tick. The bobble hats by Bobbl were one of my favourite items in store. The bobbles are interchangeable so as to allow a switch of colour whenever you should fancy it. I saw one lady come into store wearing a black hat with blue bobble and purchase two further toppers! Clearly once you’re hooked . . .

Obviously I would love for each and every one of you to be able to visit The Dressing Room on Small Business Saturday, and every other day too! But I get it, some of you awesome peeps are over in America! And others just the other end of the country! Well for you, I’ve got good news! The Dressing Room also boasts an excellent online store, which stocks 80% of the products in the retail space. Deryane is as passionate about the online arm of The Dressing Room as she is the store, and the same customer service, ease of shopping and product range is available.

Small businesses make up the DNA of towns, no two ways about it. When I think back to places I’ve visited, it’s often a little deli, flower shop or boutique which stands out in my mind as having summed up a location. Even in New York, Oli and I revisited Soho almost daily, as we were so charmed by the small independent stores we were discovering.

I am thrilled that American Express has recognised the special place independent stores have in local communities, and further to this, the wider influence they have. I am even more excited that we can all be a part of celebrating small businesses! Tomorrow, on Saturday December 6th, if you can, take the time to visit an independent store. Let me know how you get on by tagging @MonicaBeatrice in your Instagrams and Twitter, and tag @AmexUK on Twitter #ShopSmall too!

Do you have a favourite independent retailer? I want to hear it! Do you feel passionate about small businesses too?!

Have a great start to your weekends all!

Red, Black & Glitter | H&M Christmas

Sasha Pivovarova & Joan Smalls in H&M's Christmas campaign

Controversy is often caused around the following: the date we are allowed to discuss Christmas. People, let's get this straight . . . The Elgin Avenue is a Christmas safe zone! As far as I am concerned, all is fair game past November 1st.

November 1st?! Fellow festive lovers, we are just as keen as you to get this glitter ball rolling . . . !

Nothing gets me in the Christmas mood more than perusing stores, their Christmas offerings and their accompanying festive campaigns. H&M comes up trumps time and time again with its glowing, sparkly, super-model-starring campaigns, and all the good Christmas vibes (and shopping lusts!) that accompany them.

I for one am totally on board with the red, black and glitter styling in H&M's Christmas campaign this season. That tuxedo, the perfect drop earrings, the ultimate red errrythang . . . !  And yes I would happily takes tips from supermodels Sasha Pivovarova and Joan smalls on wrapping those perfect presents.

You can check out the full H&M Christmas collection here

What's caught your eye?

Have an awesome (merry!) day all!

Classic Sunglasses | The Investment

Image Via

Heyyy mid-week! Ols and I are headed to NYC at the beginning of November and I am BESIDES myself with excitement. In NYC I am going with shopping in mind. And specifically I am shopping for sunglasses. I have browsed the sunglasses halls of Liberty and Selfridges in London for months - trying on, taking off, all without the commitment. But peeps, I'm READY. And NYC is where it's at.

I am on the hunt for a classic pair, most likely in black, tortoiseshell or a dark hue - perhaps khaki?! Celine, and Karen Walker do the blog rounds - and they look ace - so are definitely on the short list, but I love Stella McCartney for a great cats eye too.

I've rounded up some of the sunglasses taking my fancy right now and would LOVE your take on which ones have your heart beating faster . . .

Quality sunglasses - like handbags, shoes and haircuts - complete an outfit. I am SUPER excited.

Have you guys found your perfect pair of sunglasses? Are there any designer frames you would recommend above others? I need help on this one guys! All opinions so very very appreciated.

Have an awesome day all!

Coat Pursuit

Coat: New Look c/o | Trousers: Chlee Jogger iSKO @ Bethnals c/o - Similar | Heels: Next c/o | T-shirt: Comptoir Des Cotoniers - Similar | Clutch: Karen Millen

Hello you lovely lot! Happyyy Fridayyyyyyy! When I was still at University last year, I worked as a waitress along side the blog. My shift was, like clockwork, Friday night through to a double shift on Saturday. As such I missed out on that Friday feeling although I did love the crazy, eclectic, awesomeness of the weekend shifts. Now that I work Monday - Friday, I totally get how awesome it feels to know that on Saturday you're off ! I look forward to a weekend cappuccino and chocolate croissant all week. And a lie-in. And magazine time. Ugh, it's just heaven!!

This weekend I am having a huge wardrobe clear out - YAY! Although obviously this shall be preceded by coffee + pastry.
Since we moved house earlier in the year I've been systematically editing my wardrobe, selling some things, donating others, re-discovering . . . it's been cathartic, and healthy and made room for new items too.
I've recently added a few Autumn/Winter pieces which I've been wearing on rotation. There's been a cold snap of late and I have been revelling in the excuse to begin layering.

Understandably, finding the perfect Winter coat is something which I feel many of us embark on with military like focus. A coat is what you will top off most outfits with and so it needs to fit many guises. For work, for the weekend, to match this colour, to go with that handbag . . . your Winter coat has a lot to live up to! Whilst I whole heartedly agree that investing in a good coat is a money-allocation you will not regret, there are FANTASTIC options on the High Street. This New Look coat costs £60. £60!!! It is a brilliant piece, the cut is flattering, the faux-leather trim is luxe, and it is warm without being stifling. If you are in the market for a coat under £100 I would fully recommend it.

By keeping outerwear purchases under £100, there's a little more wiggle room to buy a few options,  rather than splurging all of your money on one. There are arguments for and against this, but if you're looking to buy into a trend - say colour, or print - then dipping your toe in with a high street bargain is the best way to go! I'm liking this white ASOS number for that very reason.

Below are five fabulous coats for under £100! Go get 'em tigresses!

Righto, I'm spending the rest of the day with sleeves rolled up - wardrobe-sorting.

Mmm. Capuccino tomorrow.

Have a BRILLIANT weekend all!

Sassy Sleepwear

Pic from my Instagram

Hey friends! How you all doing? It's FRIDAY and I for one am pretty excited about the weekend   -   this week has knocked me for six! One of my friend's told me it's 'August exhaustion' -  is that a thing? Have you been feeling it?! Either way, I've been listening to my body, appreciating a little longer in bed in the morning, and as such have been giving extra thought to my sleepwear. Man, do I love pyjamas.

Below I've rounded up my favourite sleep attire available now. The weekend is the perfect time to treat yourself to something extra-loungy. Just think of all that time in bed . . . zzzzzzz.

As you'll see from above, I love a matching set, Marks & Spencer have a super luxe-looking set, and Topshop have a tile print version which is pretty enough to split up and wear for day time too. I won't tell if you don't! On hotter evenings I like to wear boxers and a vest. Oli I just added a pair of beautifully crafted Sir Plus boxers to his my collection. And here's a little story about the fellas over at Sir Plus; when I was a student at LCF I used to take frequent trips to Portobello Market. One day I was on the hunt for a gift for Oli when I came across a charming chap, Sir Plus's founder Henry Hales, selling pocket squares and boxers from one of the market stalls. We got chatting and he told me how each of his products is made using 'cabbage' - fabric surplus. I bought Oli a navy polkadot pocket square which he adored, and intermittently I would bump into Henry, chat, and add to Oli's growing collection of Sir Plus ware. A few years on, I am SO happy to see Sir Plus doing so well; now encompassing a whole range of products from boxers - both mens and ladies - to dressing gowns, waistcoats and more. I have my eye on the beautiful silk and cashmere scarves. I so admire people who have the endurance, inspiration and creativity to start their own business; it's awesome. Check out Sir Plus for yourselves.

What do you guys have planned for the weekend? I LOVED my magazine/coffee/bed snooze last weekend - I'm thinking of making it a Saturday morning habit - I totally recommend it to you too! Having cleared our downstairs, Ols and I now need to tackle our bedroom on Sunday, although it's a royal pain in the *** I know it'll feel cathartic and 100 x better once we have.

Have a great one guys!

10 Investment Handbags For Under £400

Buying an investment handbag is a milestone for any woman; a justifiable indulgent gift which will see you through occasions for years to come. A great handbag can elevate any outfit, make you feel confident and stylish. There are a tonne of designer handbags which will always warrant lusts, but  with prices often tipping over £1000, there a tonne of beautiful alternatives which are nicer on your wallet and equally great quality. Here's my roundup of 10 of the best Investment Handbags (including the blue babe above) for under £400 . . .
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Thoughts On colour: A black bag is a perennial failsafe, it goes with everything and is smart for both work and the weekend. Personally, I love a grey bag; it's slightly softer than black but I've found that it goes with an equal amount. This structured Ted Baker one stole my heart. Nude leather requires maintenance but looks super chic, Rebecca Minkoff has an awesome architectural tote in 'latte'. As for colour, a great cobalt blue like my new favourite Russell & Bromley tote (top image), or electric orange are fantastic for pepping up ensembles. Block colours work best for versatility.

Finally, don't overlook department stores! House Of Fraser stocks brands of quality at a good price, and Nordstrom ships internationally with a roster of brands including American labels.

Have you guys made your first big handbag investment? Or are you looking to do so at the moment? Which colour would you go for?

Have an awesome day all!

Summer Wedding Outerwear

A quick post today as I'm running/tube-ing/bus-ing between meetings (today's a serious no heel zone) - but I had to share with you guys THIS. Ols and I have two of our best couple friends getting married in consecutive weekends this month. I think (hope, pray) I've got my dresses sorted, but the outerwear?!

Thank you ASOS for solving our sartorial woes as per. This beautiful floral ASOS Salon number is just the ticket for a Wedding season coverup, it's definitely made my short list. Enough of a statement floral to steer away from twee, beautiful Summer hues and a shape which will endure through wedding season and into autumn with ripped denim and cute ankle booties

Do you guys love too?! This evening I'm getting together with some of my girlfriends for burgers and catchups - I can hardly wait.

Hope you guys have a great one too!
