WHO WORE WHAT....Golden Globe Awards 2016: Trend Alert! Ballgowns and White Gowns

Ball vs. Ivory: Ball Gowns and Ivory Dresses--Trend Alerts seen on the 2016 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet

A couple of other Trends (besides Sequined Gowns) emerged from last night's 2016 Golden Globes Red Carpet: Ball Gowns and White Dresses. It's time to take a look at some examples...

Gina Rodriguez in Zac Posen: Gina Rodriguez is my first starlet featuring the Ball Gown Trend at last night's 2016 Golden Globe Awards. Gina wore this navy blue silk gown from designer Zac Posen. The gown featured an off-the-shoulder neckline, folded and fitted bodice and box pleated full skirt. And yes, it also had side pockets. I thought she looked quite nice and I loved her modern hairstyle and clean makeup and simple jewelry.

Jaimie Alexander in Genny: One of my favorite looks of the night was this emerald green and black devore velvet and organza "printed" gown with a plunging neckline from the Italian fashion brand Genny. And again, we see those inseam side pockets. Chic and effortlessly modern.

Amy Schumer in Prabal Gurung: Comedienne and actress Amy Schumer wore this black and white ball gown from U.S. designer Prabal Gurung. The style had an off-the-shoulder neckline and very full skirt with dramatic train. Oh and yes, side pockets! The lining was white and boy, I can only imagine how dirty it must have been at the end of the night. But at least, Amy looked elegant. I love that very popular sleeked-sides updo on her and that "nude" makeup; she looked very on-trend.

Jenna Dewan Tatum in Zuhair Murad Haute Couture: Another one of my favorite looks from the 2016 Golden Globes was this Zuhair Murad Haute Couture gown worn by Mrs. Channing Tatum. The $100,000+ costing Couture ball gown was made with blue silk organza with thousands of silver crystal sequins hand sewn on the gown. And as with any ball gown of the moment, there were pockets. Of course.

Rachel McAdams in Lanvin: Ball Gown Lite--that's what I am calling this soft A-line flared gown shape. It's like a traditional ball gown but without the inner petticoat/crinoline. This ball gown, by Lanvin, was strapless and featured an asymmetrical yoke and bold flower print. I loved this gown for many reasons especially that it's unusual to see a print on the red carpet and this one was beautiful and romantic.

Saoirse Ronan in Yves Saint Laurent Couture: Actress Saoirse Ronan opted for the Grecian Goddess gown look in this ivory full skirted dress from the custom arm of the French Saint Laurent fashion brand. The brand doesn't really sell gowns and only makes them custom for top actresses for events such as these under the "label" of Yves Saint Laurent Couture. The gown is simple yet dramatic and just right for Saoirse's delicate features.

Laverne Cox in Elizabeth Kennedy: Laverne Cox wore this white ball gown from NYC-based designer Elizabeth Kennedy. Laverne was right on trend for wearing a white colored gown at last night's 2016 Golden Globes. The dress had a batteau high neck, fitted waist and column-to-back full dramatic shape. It was very impacting, both for the stark white color and the structural shape.

Lily James in Marchesa: "Downton Abbey" actress Lily James was also on the White Gown Trend with this creation from Marchesa. The Grecian Goddess-style gown had several layers with the top one being white but subtle gold and pink inner layers added depth. Very beautiful and very ethereal.

Taraji P Hensen in Stella McCartney: Miss Taraji also wore a white gown, this one being by Stella McCartney. The simple strapless sheath sculpted her figure and had added interest with a back "Watteau"-style cape/fall. I have to say, that it was a nice gown but really, Taraji's lifted eyebrows are THE REAL STARS here.

Eva Longoria in Georges Hobeika: Newly-engaged Eva Longoria wore this white cap-sleeved gown from Lebanese Couturier Georges Hobeika. The gown had delicate sequined flower appliques as well as bow-like details on the neckline and waist, as well as a center front slit for easier movement. The dress fit her like a glove.

Alicia Vikander in Custom Louis Vuitton: Actress Alicia Vikander wore this white sequined gown from Louis Vuitton. While Louis Vuitton does not make gowns for sale, they make them custom if you are...Alicia Vikander. The dress was romantic, feminine and very pretty. It wasn't Fashion with a Capital "F" but nice and pretty.

Jane Fonda in Yves Saint Laurent Couture: Finally, I have to finish my White Gown Trend ladies with THE DIVA, Miss Jane Fonda. Now, I realize this look may not be for everyone, but to heck with that! Many people--some, my own good friends, tell me "why doesn't anyone take a chance? The red carpet is sooooo boring now!". Well, Exhibit A kids: Jane Fonda is fearless, a style icon and I ADORE it! This ivory gown is from Yves Saint Laurent Couture and features a triple tiered ruffle capelet balanced off by a slim column gown and long thin sleeves. I think she is every ounce a STYLE Empress in this. It reminds me of the Besty Bloomingdale/Nan Kempner days of the FashionDiva/ muses. I wish more women dressed like this to go out on the town. Seriously.

Amfar Cinema Against AIDS Gala: Red Carpet

The Glamour Continues....

Well, there is certainly no rest for the weary if you are an A-List Celebrity taking part in all the festivities during the Cannes Film Festival! Last night was the always anticipated Amfar Cinema Against AIDS Gala and anyone who is anybody showed up to this event, to not only take part in a great party but donate to a very worthy cause. But, of course, here on my blog, what are we most interested in?? WHAT THEY WORE!

Let's take a look...

Kirsten Dunst looked picture perfect in her Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2011. I love how she added the satin skinny belt to define her waist and modified the shoulders to make it all more proportional. I even like the strong red lips as a nice contrast to the monochromatic blush ensemble.

Uma Thurman dipped into the Chanel Archives and pulled out this periwinkle duchesse silk satin gown from Karl's Chanel Haute Couture Fall 2008 Collection. I'm glad she lost the flower belt and I love that she wore flat sandals! While most actresses have to temporarily hem the gowns as much as 12 inches, Uma needs to wear flats to make it work!!!

I'm assuming this gown worn by Bar Rafaeli is Roberto Cavalli, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. While it is certainly right on trend for the Miss Universe Pagaent, I think she needs to separate herself from the Beauty Queens and give us something that is less expected. I loved the blue jersey Cavalli she wore previously and think that is a better fit for her.

Brooke Shields is another actress, in that LONG list, that is hard to make look bad in almost anything. So, it is not really surprising she looks great in this Marchesa Spring 2011 Gown. I love how she looks like a woman (as opposed to the super skinny model). I, honestly, wouldn't be shocked to find out that this is the same sample dress as seen on the model. It is amazing how one dress can look so different.

A, yet again, slimmed down Janet Jackson looked fantastic in this Fall 2011 Haider Ackermann ensemble. It perfectly fits the "Janet Jackson" aesthetic with it's hints of menswear while maintaining it's femininity. If you look at the entire Haider Ackermann collection, you can see her wearing almost the entire collection. I suspect we'll see more from this pairing.

Jane Fonda is NOT letting the young starlets steal the spotlight on the Red Carpet in Cannes. Jane loves prints and color. This Roberto Cavalli Gown allows her to embrace both without being too over-the-top and also allows everybody to ogle over her STUNNING figure!

And finally...All Royals need to take note of the flawless and effortless style of Prince Albert of Monaco's fiancee Charlene Wittstock. Her marriage to Prince Albert is the next big Royal Wedding in July and it is rumored that, just as she is wearing here at this Amfar Event, she is expected to be wearing a Custom Armani Prive Gown. Even with the inevitable comparisons to Grace Kelly, Charlene seems and looks confident that her sense of style is equally as chic.

64th Annual Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet Fashion Report Card: Who Gets an "A"?

Grading the Cannes Girls...

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Armani Prive Spring 2011: Well, well well, Miss Aishwarya, you are really trying to BRING IT my dear! First Elie Saab Haute Couture, and now Armani Prive Spring 2011. Both of these gowns--if she were to actually pay for them--would cost in the vicinity of $30,000-$40,000. And the former Miss World just gets them for free darlings, because she (the Armani reps hope) will say OVER and OVER again, when interviewed, that she's wearing ARMANI Prive and millions upon millions in her country will see that and hopefully buy his perfume...But besides this, she looks pretty spectacular. Simple, geometric and a great silhouette. One complaint is I think the higher part of the bustier might be a tad bit too short and I also like the original metallic fabric of the bustier better. Grade: A-

Rachel McAdams in Monique Lhuillier Spring 2011: Sporty and elegant. Rachel began Cannes in an over-the-top Marchesa gown fit for a Gallery Exhibition, but now she's in a very wearable wide-legged pant ensemble with strapless bustier top. Although pants might seem an unusual choice for the RC, Rachel clearly has decided to mix it up at the festival and although she might not be getting it completely right, she certainly is getting noticed. What's also nice is seeing the NATURAL WAIST of a woman. So OVER low-slung pants. That's so 2003. I would have loved that same skinny gold belt used on the runway look. There's just "something" missing. Grade: B+

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson: I'm in LOVE with Diane and Joshua. In. Love. Love that she's all-out Glamour and he's like "Are these the MTV-France Awards?" I'm not usually a fan of men--at big red carpet award events--trying to give "high-low". The tux and sneakers thang should stay within the "Nickelodeon Awards" circles. But with that being said, I will give cutie Joshua a pass. I couldn't find who designed Diane's gown but I will take a wild guess and say (maybe) Ralph Lauren, (maybe) Michael Kors, only because of its "Pattern 101" simplicity and clean lines. But I may be wrong. I like 'em both. Grade: A-

Bryce Dallas Howard in Reem Acra: OK, before you say anything: No, she is not pregnant! So, with that disclaimer, WHY oh WHY would she chose a MATERNITY DRESS??? No. No. And No. The Empire line is way to high and should be dropped 2 inches--at least. I usually love Reem Acra and she has a BIG strong pr team backing her to show gown after gown on the red carpet. But, this one was a miss. Grade: C-

Jane Fonda in Emilio Pucci: Seriously Jane. Stop It! And when I say "Stop It!", I mean KEEP GOING!!!! This woman is 73 years old. I'm sorry but I don't know many 73 year old woman who can bust out a column, form-fitting Emilio Pucci gown like this. Truth be told, I don't know many 23 year old women who could do this!!! Grade: A
