Khakis, Mom Jeans, Too Big Dress Shirts & Bland, Bland, Bland...

Running For President = BLAND Fashion. Why do Presidents or persons running for President of the U.S.A. look so BLAND? Is that what America wants? And should it be that way? Let me raise this question: why do they have to dress like that? Is it good to look bland and so "middle-of-the-road" in terms of style and fashion? Does dressing too well send bad messages to the voters, such as "Too style-concerned means they are frivolous and not worried about the economy, taxes and foreign policy". Of course, as a voter myself, I would not think that but perhaps I am in the minority. As the election draws to an end (Thank God!), and after watching so much news coverage of President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney, I began to think--as a Fashion Designer --WHY do these men wear those pleated khakis; why are their dress shirts SO BIG; and why, oh why...do they have to wear Mom Jeans and those navy nylon blouson jackets. Why are the men running for President of the U.S.A. so unfashionable? They dress like my 85 year old dad--who, I love but--he's EIGHTY-FIVE! But maybe that's how America wants to see their Presidents and/or Presidential hopefuls...



Khaki Love:

President Obama and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie: I get it, President Obama is touring the destruction and damage Super-storm Sandy brought upon New Jersey (here with NJ Governor Chris Christie) and therefore, his outfit has to say "Casual, Concerned but yet still, Business-minded". To me, it's fine, but why does it ALWAYS have to be this; it's like the Straight Man's Version of "Casual Friday's at the Office". But he still looks like an insurance salesmen surveying the damage. I guess I should just be happy that at least President Obama was wearing FLAT FRONT khakis--as opposed to these pleated ones he featured in the past:

I know that he's got "bigger fish to fry" than what to wear but...I wonder if he asks someone in his staff "What should be appropriate for this sort of thing?" and some person with no knowledge of style says "khakis, an open-collar dress shirt, and a nylon jacket". If a Fashion Gay (like me) got to him, I would at least, give him a FAB Trench Coat! Oh--and a scarf. Hermes, preferably. But, yes I am happy that at least someone got to him and told him to DITCH the pleated khakis and go for the FLAT FRONT. Thank you Michelle Obama (I presume--or that gay staffer with style!).

Romney Not Exempt: Governor Mitt Romney drank the "Blouse-y Jacket Kool-Aid" too...this whole ensemble looks like the "Dad Meeting his Daughter's New Boyfriend...on a Saturday" outfit. But to the US, it says "I can be casual too!".  I don't even know what to say. This jacket needs to be put away...far, far away. Maybe the US Government can spend some of my tax money on hiring a design company to make "uniforms"--stylish ones--for the Presidents and Hopeful Presidents--something similar to say, what Banana Republic just designed for the Virgin America staff, flight attendants and pilots  to wear:

I would be all for that. They would create an "Outfit to Tour Disaster Areas", an "Outfit To Tour Ohio", an "Ensemble to visit the Troops", an "Outfit for a Europe Visit", and so on. The First Lady spends so much time on her clothing (and in return, we the public, spend the same amount of time--if not more--scrutinizing it), why can it be the same for the men?



Mom Jean Boys:

PS: It's 2012, Boys: I just about cringe when I see both Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama in those too-high waisted mom jeans. I give points to Governor Romney for his pant legs being a little slimming--but, I take them away when  I see those tacky "whiskers" on the jeans. And need I remind everyone of President Obama and those mom jeans he wore when he threw out the first pitch at the All-Star game back in 2009. I think I gave away a similar style to Out of The Closet back in 1993! Have we seen  Obama wear these again? Nope, not so much. Hopefully, he gave those away too. And not to the Smithsonian!



Too Big Dress Shirts:

Dress Shirt Madness: Both President Obama and Governor Romney love the no-tie, unbutton one button look when they are out there on the "stump" reaching out to the "blue-collar" voters. This is a big theme during those visits. This fashion style makes them look a little more "like us"--or so their handlers think. To me, they look like they are selling vacuum cleaners but I guess to the rest of America, they look "Presidential Casual". And what is up with the roll-up the cuffs thing? So TIRED. Seriously, do people still think this mean s"Oh, look, they're getting to work!! Yipee!".

Tie-Less Boys: Governor Romney and President Obama

Too Large: Why is the shirt SO big? I seriously want to grab three inches off the side and take up about the same amount through the armhole. In all my years as a designer and working with wardrobe stylists on many shows, we always came across men who wanted their clothing WAY too big; we would ask them "What size are you?" And they would say "42 Regular" and we would put them in  a 38R. What is it about men (or at least STRAIGHT Men) wanting to wear boxier, bigger garments? Slimmer dress shirts boys.

So Who Will Win the Presidential Fashion "Nick" Test?

President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney--I'm not sure either will win in the Fashion Election, but hopefully all politicians will slowly move away from the pleated khakis, mom jeans, too-big dress shirts and blouse-y nylon jackets. What do you guys think? Should our Presidents and President Hopefuls look a little more stylish or at least, stop dressing like 85 year old men? It’s no secret smart casual is my personal favourite style on men. It’s elegant, classic and truly a put-together look. You can rock business casual this fall by switching out your summer linen blazer, for a deep purple, checkered suit jacket instead.

This blazer paired with beige pants and camel leather loafers is an awesome color contrast for autumn, that’ll keep you looking classy all season long.

SWEATER AND A BLAZER

Much like the previous look, this is also a smart casual outfit as well. This attire is a great transitional one from the summertime.

Despite beige and white being summer colors, you can get away with this outfit in the autumn simply by switching out your polo, for a crew neck sweater. This way, you can easily pull-off this summer inspired look in the fall too.

Match the look with an elegant pair of boots, and you are set to kill fall fashion.

EDGY AND BUSINESS CASUAL COLLIDE

What I love about this outfit is how it merges two styles together: business casual and edgy. This creates an unexpectedly unique look.

The base of the outfit is quite contemporary with the t-shirt and trousers combination. However, the addition of the leather jacket and dress shoes make the look a little more rough.

This style is great if you like switching things up and are experimenting with your clothing.

So mind the details instead of throwing together the main parts of your outfit. “Details” can include a scarf, a subtle pocket square, or the way you tie your tie knot.

If it’s one thing that women will notice, it’s your shoes. Especially how clean and sharp they look. It’s easy to wash and press the rest of your clothes to keep them looking new, but most guys disregard their shoes. 5 Fashion Trends We Learned Form Clueless

Do you prefer "Fashion victim" or "ensembly challenged"..?

Can you believe our favourite blockbuster from the 90's is turning 21 years old this month ? 21 years of sass, giggles, wisdom and gorgeous outfits just went by while it seems like the famed movie was airing  for the first time just a little while ago. I mean, seriously, who hasn't been completely obsessed over Dionne's sense of Fashion, Tai's incredibly chill vibe and Cher's... Well, Cher's everything; from a colorful and kind personality, to a breathtaking beauty, to an undeniable faith in great love. Not to mention that all of theses gals truly knew how to pull off an outfit and how to keep-up with trends that lasted over two decades now. Let's look into it a little deeper…

1. OVERSIZED BLAZER

Oversized blazers have been a thing since the 80's but Clueless showed a more polished version of the outerwear garment, making it super versatile and easy to wear on the daily. They're the best option for an unconventional Autumn jacket and an essential to achieve the boyfriend look (along with BF jeans!). You can wear an oversized blazer along with skinny dress pants for a modern twist on the woman's corporate suit or you can simply layer it on your shoulders with harem pants, a white tee and a nice pair of sandals for a night out in town. 2. FRONT BUTTON-DOWN SKIRT

3. MAD FOR PLAID

Plaid has been one of the oldest and most worn pattern all-around the world for more than five centuries, mostly because associated to monarchy and posh lifestyle. Although it is such a timeless print, it can become extremely old-fashioned if worn the wrong way. Worn the right way though, it is one of those trends that anyone could pull-off, making a major Fashion statement ! Cher and Dionne certainly knew how to sport their classic suits back in 1995, without looking too generic. It is all about appropriating yourself the pattern in the right colour, shape, length and accessorizing it well. Cher's inclination for the colour yellow is such a character statement; bold, happiness-seeker and goal digger !

4. LITTLE RED DRESS

With all do respect for the infamous LBD, a new slip dress is slowly making its way back to the top and it's the little red one ! Of course, Cher knew right away that such a piece in such a colour was a go-getter for the perfect entrance at anytime; she made sure to sport it in a more casual but still Beverly Hills way, while attending a party in the Valley, and to dress it up in a sultry, sexy but very PG-13 kinda-way for a date night with Christian. I'm pretty confident it would have worked if Christian wasn't actually a cake boy but hey, A+ for effort !

I am such a fan of this one, this one and that one too.

5. BLACK & WHITE

Last but not least, the black and white sporty trend. A huge thanks to mind-blowers like Muehleder, Michael Kors, Stella McCartney who single-handedly brought back this genius Fashion genre to life a few seasons ago. Other brands like Alala, FILA, River Island and Pierre Hardy kept-up with it, making it what it is today in the high-Fashion industry. Sportswear no longer have to remain in your gym locker, that's a fact, but if you feel like styling-up a bit your athleisure game, be our guest ;)

What you decide on can make the difference in how you feel when you finally step out for the day. However, there are some sneakers that can work with anything from sweats, to denim, to leather -

 Your sneakers are meant for more than just the gym. Though they got their start as flimsy “plimsolls” meant for working-class holidaymakers and purpose-built footwear designed for athletes, sneakers have become a staple in a every man’s (and woman’s, for that matter) wardrobe. Now your sneakers can be a fashion statement as well as workout gear – maybe even both at the same time.

Basics Sneaker Rules

No matter what kind of sneakers you settle on, there are a few basic principles for how to wear sneakers you should abide by. Always:

    Buy sneakers that suit your current wardrobe: What good does it do to buy the latest style if it doesn’t suit your style? Don’t hop on the trend train just because it’s passing through. Choose shoes that complement what you already have, not shoes that require you to repurchase your entire wardrobe.
    Wear them to the right occasions (don’t go too casual): Sneakers are incredibly versatile, but they’re no substitute for dress shoes. You can get away with sneakers with any off-duty outfit – and perhaps even some casual, unstructured suits – but they’re not meant for every occasion. Err on the side of overdressed rather than underdressed.
    Keep them clean: It doesn’t matter how cool your sneakers are, the effect will be lost if they’re not spick-and-span. Proper sneaker maintenance includes washing the laces, eliminating odours, brushing the outsoles, and using shoe trees and sneaker shields.

Knowing Your Sneakers / Trainer Types

Sneakers come in many shapes and sizes these days. From the very basic to the brightest leather, from the minimal to the metal fastenings, there are few rules when it comes to your trainers. With so many options available, it can be hard knowing exactly what’s what and even harder to know what’s most likely to suit your wardrobe and taste.

    Basic Sneakers – These are your Converse, Vans, etc., types. Sometimes they come in leather, but they’re typically found in canvas and in basic colours. On the whole they’re generally affordable and easy to wear / clean.
    Refined Luxury Sneakers – They might bear a resemblance to the basic sneakers, but they’re more expensive and often made from suede or leather by brands like Tom Ford, Lanvin & Saint Laurent. These are not something you take to a music festival.
    Classic Sports Sneakers – Think Nike Air Max 90, Reebok Pump, Asics, Tiger and other forms of old school sport greatness. What was once ready for the track and field is now kept safely in a shoe collection at home.
    Current Sport Sneakers – Again, these are your Nike, Adidas and Puma brands, but with modern styling and shapes.
    High-fashion Sneakers – These are the work of brands like Givenchy, Christian Louboutin, Maison Martin Margiela, Diemme and even Giuseppe Zanotti. They’re loud and designed to be noticed.
    High Tech – This special group may not be universally recognised yet, but I hear by dub it “High Tech.”  This is the category for the likes of Rick Owens and other designers who are really pushing the limits of sneaker design.

What You Need To Know To Get The Best Look

The Basic ClassicsCons, Chucks, canvas kicks… whatever you call them, the basic sneaker is the most versatile casual sneaker you can buy. They work well with denim, chinos and shorts of pretty much any colour and shade. Where I find guys sometimes get a little unstuck with these types of sneakers is when they wear them to smart casual events or to work when a dress shoe is required. The basic sneaker DOES NOT work for every occasion and should be kept solely for casual situations. Your best bet on top is to run with print t-shirts, gingham shirts or even a blazer for the college professor look.

    Mix with relaxed, slim & skinny denim and chinos
    Keep for casual/street occasions only
    Maintain to ensure they stay clean and respectable
    Best suited to younger men

Refined Luxury Sneakers
My personal favourite is the luxury take on the basic sneaker. These beautiful specimens have allowed sneakers to jump from street casual to smart casual without looking like they belong on a teenage boy. They can be worn with tailored trousers, slim denim, chinos and in some cases even casual unstructured suiting. I tend to avoid wearing them with shorts, as these sneakers are quite often bulky in comparison to the basic canvas sneakers. Keep it refined on top to match the shoe. Basic t-shirts, smart shirts and polos are all great options. For a more distinct look, opt for a shirt with a slim or knit tie, a blazer and some slim denim.

    Dress up, not down
    Start with black, then purchase other colours
    Take extra care with suede and don’t wear it too often
    Try brighter pairs for summer / European holidays

Classic Sports Sneakers

Sneakerheads, unite! These babies started the sneaker revolution that we have today. Jordans, Pumps, 90s – these are your street-going, hip-hop kicks that are just popping with colour. The idea with classic sports sneakers is to find a couple that complement your style and purchase a few pairs in different colours. Slim- and tapered-fit denim, loose t-shirts (with or without prints) and casual outerwear are your essential staples when it comes to dressing these sneakers. Pair them with chino shorts for an easy win in summer. The key is to find the balance between hip-hop artist and everyday citizen. Some guys like to rock a snap back – that’s up to you. Personally, I like to colour match my sneakers with what I’m wearing on top, to give the look a sense of purpose and cohesiveness.

    Find a few styles you like and stick to them
    Colour match if you can
    Pin roll, or rock with khaki chinos when it’s warm
    Sell them on eBay if you don’t like them

 
High-Fashion Designer Sneakers

Expensive and not for the faint of heart, these top end sneakers are getting louder and more in-your-face every season. For an example of someone who wears them well consistently, look to Kanye West. A common approach to wearing these sneakers matches them with slim denim that’s often gathered at the bottom and t-shirts with open plaid shirts. There’s also the parisian style, which includes long and drapey blazers and singlets that add even more edge to the look. Black denim is a must-own item as well as longer, looser fit t-shirts.
