Who else woke up this morning feeling they didn't get enough sleep last night, again?
** Cue raise hand.
And how are we feeling today? Sh*tty, I know ;) It's never fun to have to rush out of bed and get ready for another day at work while feeling like you're coming back straight from the dead. In my opinion, a good night sleep is one of the key ingredients to a successful day; it allows you to increase productivity, avoid making silly mistakes and leaves you feeling energized and rejuvenated for the whole day ahead.
Even though at times, lack of sleep is purely and essentially our own fault (that Netflix marathon simply couldn't wait until the weekend!), we, most times, think we are getting the best kind of rest possible by going to bed early while in fact, we're really not making the most out of it. And for those of us, overachievers, who want to get the best out of everything in life, here are five sleep secrets you might not know will help you get the best sleep of your life...

And for those of us, overachievers, who want to get the best out of everything in life, here are five sleep secrets you might not know will help you get the best sleep of your life...
STAY ACTIVE
Working out isn't just good to stay in shape and be healthier, it will also help you boost your energy during the day and make sure you feel the need to recharge at night. After a day at work, I love hitting the tennis club to play a few sets with fellow members. It's a good way for me to stay active on a daily basis and to put me to sleep in no time when I get home. Yoga is also a great way to exercise before going to bed as it will help you unplug and gather your thoughts.
MAKE YOUR BEDROOM A STRESS-FREE ZONE
Your bedroom should be your sanctuary. You need to keep anything that could cause you anxiety or excitement out of the room so it doesn't keep you awake or worse, affect your subconscious while you're sleeping. Laptops, reports, TVs, that IKEA shelf you were assembling... They got to go!
STICK TO A ROUTINE
Whether it's during the weekdays or the weekends, I always try to follow a steady sleep schedule and wake up/go to bed around the same time. When I started working full-time, I would always try to cut down on my sleep time during the week and make up for the lack of sleep over the weekend. BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER: this made my Monday mornings so awful, I couldn't even get out of bed before the 6th snooze. The trick is to keep you biological clock running and intact so it will help you wake up naturally, feeling well-rested.

USE YOU BED FOR WHAT ITS REALLY MEANT FOR
I am the Queen of I'll-just-bring-all-of-this-upstairs-in-my-bed-and-I'll-finish-working-from-there… Anyone else? For some reason, we seem to think it's a great idea to finish working from the comfort of our beds, right before going to sleep. But what it really does is sending a message to your brain, letting it know that bed = work. How could you possibly get a good night sleep and rest if you're lying in your work environment? Associating your bed with the right activities will make it easier for you to unwind and fall asleep.
TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
Naturally, bright light keeps us awake. You want to make sure that your room remains dark during your entire sleep cycle and that nothing disturbs it. Whether it's a TV that you left on, an e-book on your tablet you fell asleep to, the multiple notifications you get on your phone which cause it to light up about 35 times every night, you want to make sure you turned off any possible source of distraction that can stand between you and your best sleep ever!
Sleep tight...
