What To Wear On Thanksgiving Day - For Women

Thanksgiving Dress

Thanksgiving brings with it a lot of stress, especially if you’re the one cooking, but one thing you shouldn’t be worried about is your Thanksgiving outfit.

To save you a bit of frustration down the line, I’m going to cover a variety of Thanksgiving outfits that are appropriate for the holiday, from casual to dressy. Whether you’ll be frolicking in the leaves, stuck in the kitchen, or are headed to a big family affair or just to a friend’s house, I’ve got you covered. Getting dressed has never been so easy, especially if you put a little thought into it now. (And don’t forget to leave a little wiggle room in whatever you wear to accommodate the feast of the holiday!)

Casual Thanksgiving Outfits

When it comes to casual Thanksgiving dress, opt for pants. I, personally, like jeans with just a hint of stretch, but fall always reminds of me corduroy. While you can opt for a nice dark-wash denim, both jeans and corduroy pants come in a variety of colors that are appropriate for the season: warm beige, chocolate brown, hunter green, and rust. Why not up the color factor with something fun in your Thanksgiving outfit?

You’ll want to add some layers to those pants, given the chill factor in most parts of the country this time of year. Depending on the temperature, you can opt for a turtleneck, button-down Oxford shirt, or long-sleeved t-shirt for your first layer. Top it off with a sweater or a vest. You can choose a pullover in either a crewneck or V-neck, a short or long cardigan (with or without buttons), or a vest.

If you’d rather, you can forego the sweater and rock a moto jacket, utility jacket, or a blazer. Top it all off with some panache—maybe a scarf, fun hat, or piece of statement jewelry—for a cute Thanksgiving outfit.

 Dressy Casual Thanksgiving Outfits

Let’s just start by saying there are no jeans allowed in dressy casual Thanksgiving outfits. This dress code calls for a nice pair of trousers or a skirt. I personally prefer trousers because skirts and dresses tend to err more on the side of dressier, but your closet (and your family) will dictate what is best for your Thanksgiving outfit.

For trousers, really anything in a nice black, brown, gray, burgundy, or blue would look great. You can stick with a solid color or go with a small pinstripe, and keep the hem full length (with or without cuff, straight or wide leg) or cropped at the ankle. Generally a nice mid-rise works the best, but don’t discount a high-rise pant which looks great on tall ladies. (The reason you see cropped trousers in these examples is because I prefer them. I feel like they make me look taller and I get to show off my shoes.)

If you choose to do a skirt for your Thanksgiving outfit, stick with similar colors as the pants above, but you could also add a nice plaid if you so choose. The hemline can start a few inches above the knee and go to midi length, especially this time of year.

You can pair the pants or skirt with a nice sweater (turtleneck or pullover), silk blouse, or button-down Oxford. You can even wear a simple solid T-shirt with a glitzy necklace like I did in Image #9.

Stick to heels, heeled boots or booties, or a fancy pair of embellished flats to keep with the dressy casual vibe of your outfit. Speaking of embellishments, this is dressy casual, so you can rock a statement piece of jewelry or keep it simple with classic pieces…your choice.

If you would like, you can also wear a blazer over the look. You’re already wearing nice pants so add a nice black top to match and you’re set.
