OHM '17 - The Arts Center Collection

Sunday 30th July

A scrapbook collected over 24yrs by the circus that used to be where the arts center is now. These are photos of famous people back in the 20s/30s (judging by hairstyles) that came with cigarettes. The book itself is huge! And looks like it weighs quite a bit, I'm not sure how they'd actually look at it after adding so many pages.

For Open House, the Arts Center did a tour of its collections, things from shows held there over the years and objects collected, from costumes to set designs and flyers. The collection is located under the lawn.

A set design for a play.

Retro suitcases or rather trunks.

Some amazing and crazy dresses worn by Dame Edna. The scream is pretty spectacular!

How her glasses are stored, categorized and with a barcode that tells the computer where the box is being stored. I love the system! When you have so many props/costumes that you caterlog them like a library. :P

That yellow dress is from 'Hello Dolly'. And that girl is very suspicious...

Where photos and files are stored. How will this change with computers?

It was pretty cool going behind the scenes, to inspire organizing things!

3 WAYS, 3 DAYS

A blazer is a great fill-in for any occasion and every man has at least one in his wardrobe. They are perfect for situations in which a suit is too formal and you want to have a little sprinkling of your personality and individuality.

You all know how much I adore colours and fortunately this James Harper blazer has arrived just in time for Spring/Summer with its vibrant colour. The blazer is the perfect transitional wardrobe piece moving seasons from Winter to Spring. It is time to hang up those winter coats, wave goodbye to winter and don a blazer in a bright colour. This colour is sure to catch more than a few eyes on the streets, and it’s flattering shape works with just about anything I can throw at it.

I am super excited about this colourful blazer, and it’s refreshing style that within 3 days, I wore it 3 different ways! It is perfect for summer with its slim lapel, double vents and the spot print lining is super fun when unbuttoned. Men like to purchase pieces that ensure versatility and value for money and this blazer works just as well outside the office as it does inside.

Day 1 – Blazer and Jeans

This great blazer and a humble pair of jeans created a great combination. The cut of the bright coloured blazer paired with the casual style of jeans created a sharp and chic yet relaxed vibe. Obviously the simplest of my 3 days, 3 ways, this look is totally easy for any man to achieve. By pairing the blazer with a plain shirt you will make the look more casual (remember to unbutton your top button) and your trusty white canvas kicks will make this a failsafe style that you can repeatedly rely on. If you don’t feel like being neither casual or dressy but quite neutral , opt for a polo shirt. It is another failsafe item that every gent has in their wardrobe. The great thing about this look is it is so versatile and can take you from afternoon meetings to drinks and spontaneous dancing with friends. Throw on this blazer during the day and it will keep you looking sharp through to when happy hour starts and beyond.

Day 2- Blazer Short Combo

On day 2 the sun begun to poke out of the clouds and I paired the blazer with a pair of shorts, also by James Harper, a white tee and some simple white canvas shoes, perfect look for sunnie afternoons.I opted to have the koi fish embroidery added to the jacket to customise it and make it a little special. The embroidery pattern is custom made (lovely touch) and hand stitched to the blazer. Embroidery has popped up everywhere thanks to the big fashion houses embracing embellishments and embroidery. I adore it’s unique eclectic vibe and it is wonderful to see menswear is getting in on the trend. Obviously you do not need to opt for the embroidery and the great thing is if you do, you can always remove it so you will have the blazer for seasons to come.

Day 3- Blazer for work
By day 3 I was totally mad for this blazer! The great thing about a statement blazer is you really do not need to buy a whole new wardrobe to match it. Dress to impress at the office by combining the blazer with pieces in your existing corporate wardrobe. You will be surprised how this great colour matches what you gents would already have in your wardrobe, such as navy’s and grey. The trick is to make a statement without being too over-the-top and keeping your ensemble work-friendly. When in doubt start with a light or dark base and work from there to create outfit harmony. To create a polished look for work I combined the blazer with a plain shirt with minimal details and pair of suit pants, topping it off with a pocket square. The pocket square helps break up the solidity of the blazer. If you do not know how to wear a pocket square, please revert to WHAT’S IN YOUR POCKET.

Stand out in the crowd by styling the blazer with a pair of shorts, a navy shirt and some white kicks. Totally on-point for afternoons out with friends. You could always combine them with some brown suede shoes that would convert this to a classic look for a more formal occasion, such as the polo, or nine-to-five.

My friends at James Harper have kindly offered you 10% off at their online store by using the code GFASH10.

Whether you need a blazer for work or just a fancy occasion, I hope I have inspired you to think outside the grey, navy or black box.

Open House Melbourne 2017 - Windsor Hotel

Sunday 30th July

Slide shows are broken at the moment, so we'll be featuring a post per location we visited during Open House Melbourne.

Known for their afternoon tea 'The Hotel Windsor' was first called 'The Grand' (which there is one of in every city) and renamed after a visit and stay from the Duke of Windsor. It was designed by the same architecture as Melbourne Grammar and the Royal Arcade in 1883.

There used to be 300 rooms, just a small room with shared bathrooms on each floor but today there are 180 rooms, each with their own bathrooms, as we are used to. There are also 7 suite (apartments).

One of the suites.

What an interesting brooch! H would hate it XD It's $120.

This year it is 134yrs old and the most grand of its kind at the time, during the times when Melbourne first opened. Featuring steamed power water and air/heating, it is the only one of its kind left in Melbourne. An icon, an old hotel with modern conveniences. It is very popular as a filming location for shows like 'Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries'.

Tickets to high tea start from $70 for adults. That's the weekday one. The weekend is $90 but includes an all you can eat dessert buffet. You will die, but it'll be so worth it. Yes we've been, for our 5th anniversary. On par on price with the Langham, it is saved for special occasions or out of town visits. It's a try once thing, though jas says I say that about too many things. XD Oh and you can choose to sit in the ballroom (pictured) for authenticity, or the regular dinning room for better lighting and modern styling.

I didn't write about our experience sadly, as le beau asked me not too... as we (he) doesn't like sharing too much with the public. But it was very good, it's not my go-to place for high tea though, we've yet to find a favouriite after the Providence closed.

The Windsor is jas's favourite hotel in Melbourne, as we love history, though I have to say the sparkle, glitz and glam of the new hotels have got me. On pricing I think we're going to go with airbnb though. Luckily I'm delighted to say that we shall be visiting the Windsor and staying at a suite soon!

Eat. Blog. Play.

Monday 31st July

A revisit to our first, and actually one and only sushi train I've been to. After Sushi Hub, Hotaru seems not as good nor fresh though I'm sure it's cheaper. S It's the sauces and freshness that makes Sushi Hub better - though I've only had their takeaway. Though they weren't around last time we visited Hotaru. Sushi Hub (is down atm 25/9 due to a water leakage that took out half the block) does a $30 all-you-can-eat in 90mins thing.

Hightail Bar Launches!

Thursday

A warehouse in Kensington set the scene of this mornings event, usually cold there were plenty of outdoor heaters though none of the oil drum honour variety fortunately.
Kids and home decor lifestyle trade show. We won the major prize by default? Though I'd be happy with a candle, lunch and coconuts. It was a breakfast meet and greet though we  underestimated how far it was on the other side of the city.

Lunch at Momo. Lunch goes till 4pm here! The latest I've seen anywhere. We ordered the Wonton Noodle Soup from the $15 lunch menu. Through liven it's $17...

Friday

Checking out a trade event. Workshops, lunch and snacks included!

The unicorn festival was hectic as expected with no lines just crowds. The girl before us bought the last handful of cookies I wanted!! The unicorn one. Also the stalls signs were pretty low so you had to battle the crowds to just find the right stand. Not great. We spent around $24 on four treats, one a regret.

I didn't like the cakey donuts (Dessert Parlour's I love) though Ray's cake pops had a cake pop-like filling cake with sprinkles and crispy pearls which were awesome! We really need to stop going to these crazy crowded novelty events...

Dinner at Barolo, excellent service from my favourite waitress. We had the beef and Shiraz ragu with mash. Warm and hearty I loved it! Just a touch salty but ok, melt in your mouth beef accompanied with mash, not the best one ever but still pretty good. I'd highly recommend this dish and would get it again.

Saturday

Treats from the Bakery!

Lunching at Punchbowl Canteen.

Sunday

Aladdin was just as we remembered with all the music and magic. Unfortunately some were lost thanks to the brat behind me who I had to glare at a few times. Next time we just need to tell on them. *work that assertiveness*

Dinner at Saint Urban was free of kids, thank God. The cheesy gnoochi was awesome! And very filling. With very friendly service. Note the step at the bathroom. Nearly died there.

Sleeping Beauty  - Dir. Ado Arrietta · France Spain (2016).

  • It was weird. Muted as if a filter had been caster upon the entire thing.
  • Edwardian-esque though leaning more towards cosplay fail. What's with the gong and Greek guard dressed like ancient Rome? That or he got the dress code wrong.
  • The castle was more like a manor and it felt like a budget film.
  • Silence, there was a lot of that. Other than footsteps and the snaps of the camera there was a silence during the exploration of the castle. So it's 2016, 100 years after the curse. There's a modern day prince (not the princely type, but just a 20-something year old boy who happens to be a prince) trying to find her. The challenges are easy, there are no dragons.
  • He kisses her, waking her and they're getting hitched. They dance, him topless and her in a modern dressing gown that's way too sexy for a 15yr old. They're about to do it. So we assume they fast forwarded over the wedding especially as we hear Tsiolkovsky famous waltz and there's a 20s radio. Why is there service in a forest? How does he have cell reception?
  • The main guy was a bore. And he has a friend but other than singing Amazing Grace to drums and being a shadow we know nothing about this guy.

Ingrid Goes West - It was amazing! A fantastic and hilarious comedy on our obsession with social media and the highlight reel of life. If you're on instagram you need to see this!!
