SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss World 2015 "World Fashion Designer Dress" Part Two: My Choices for Good and Cray-Cray!

Can You Guess Which The Good and Which are The Cray-Cray?--Miss World 2015 "World Fashion Designer Dress" event--Miss World 2015 Sanya China

In my last post HERE, I discussed the announcement of the Top Ten (according to the Miss World Organization) Designer Dresses in the Miss World 2015 "World Fashion Designer Dress" event. I was skeptical and slightly questionable of the choices so...I decided--after looking at all the designs--to give MY Top Choices that should have been there. Because it is the "Miss World" pageant and this is the "World Fashion Designer Dress" event, there's always a bit of Cray-Cray and Oh Dear! creations. So, in addition to my choices for good, I've also added some of the Cray-Cray. Let's get started:

The Good:

Honduras Gabriela Salazar: I thought this was one of the best gowns from the "World Fashion Designer Dress" event/competition. I loved the fit and the length was just right (no sight of platform heels! Yeayyy!). I also liked the sequined red criss-cross details layered over the black colored gown base. The design was impacting and gave a slight nod to the red color in China being such an important color in that nation--which is hosting this year's Miss World.

China PR Yuan Lu: Speaking of China, the host nation's representative, Yuan Lu, wore this wonderful navy blue with green sequin detail strapless mermaid style gown. I loved the draped petal-like flourish in the front and the dress was dramatic in a great red carpet way.

Venezuela Anyela Galante: Anyela wore this violet blue knit gown featuring long sleeves, a raised mock-neck and thousands of glittering sequins. The design was simple and arguably, not so directional or Haute Couture-like exciting but I loved the heavy-to-light effect of the sequins, reminding me of a midnight sky with falling stars. I also liked her slicked back hairstyling.

Philippines Hillarie Parungao: Hillarie's gown choice (just like Venezuela's) may not have been so "exciting' in terms of design but I thought it was beautiful. The pink fit-to-flare style featured silver sequined applique leaf-like scrolls as well as straight-line crystals on the diagonal throughout the body of the dress. Feminine, delicate, and very, very pretty.

South Sudan Ajaa Monchol: Ajaa looked like an actress on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet in this black chiffon with sequin applique gown. The style was elegant, had enough interest with the detail and made the over six foot tall beauty look almost regal.

Malta Katrina Pavia: I loved Katrina's one shoulder gown. How this didn't make the actual Miss World Organization's/Judge's Top ten is beyond me. It reminded me of a glorious Indian sari as well as an updated version of something we would have seen Elizabeth Taylor wear to a gala or awards show in the 60's or early 70's. The sequined embroidery looked well done.

Guam Aria Perez Thiesen: One word--WOW! One normally wouldn't expect a representative from Guam (sorry Guam!) to 'bring it" in terms of a quality gown, but they did this year! The sequined emerald dress was definitely an entrance-maker. The jeweled bead work in the front torso was very impacting as well. If I had any complaint, it would be in the over-the-top styling: the Pageant Bouffant, the Too-Mucheeey accessories/jewelry...all that was so unnecessary, especially when the gown is so "Jeweled" already. Loosen the hair, ditch the earrings...and you are good to go!

Australia Tess Alexander: Tess' gown was definitely a stand-out amongst the 100+ contestants. It was one of the only true "ball gowns" and I thought it was both fun and glorious. The fit was great, it didn't look like a top of a wedding cake and I liked how her hair was relaxed, modern and young. She looked like a young aristocrat at the Paris Crillon Debutante Ball.

Honorable Mentions for Good:

Nicaragua Stefania Aleman: I liked this "different" style worn by Miss World Nicaragua. The blue coloration was impacting and elegant but what really got my attention was the fabulous guipure lace hi-lo "cape/coat".

Zambia Michelo Malambo: I was impressed by this gown worn by Miss World Zambia. The regal purple color looked amazing against her skin color and the design--albeit a tad "Pageant Betty" was still well done--I liked the folded front peplum with lace overlay as well as jeweled front torso details.

Fab Hat Gal:

Lesotho Relebohile Kobile: Three words--Go On Girl! I loved this entire look. She literally is giving "Lesotho Flag Couture"! Love it.

Panama Diana Jaen: I gotta give Miss World Panama points for Design Chutzpah! She decided to go all out Asiana Queen with what she wore for the "World Fashion Designer Dress" event/competition, paying homage to China, the nation where Miss World 2015 is being held. Normally, I might have put this under the "Cray-Cray" but A) wait until you really see THE CRAY-CRAY (below) and B) this was well-done and styled from head to toe; she looked like the Queen of a Macau Casino. And I loved that!

The Cray-Cray------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Croatia Maja Spahija: Where do I begin with the design cray-cray. Maybe the pointed front bustier/torso "rabbit ears" might be a good start. I can only imagine this design in front of the "Project Runway" judges and we know Nina Garcia, Zac Posen and Heidi Klum would have a FIELD DAY! And if the kooky pointed front wasn't enough, look closely, there's a candy colored tulled underskirt. Cray-cray for sure. On a good note, I do appreciate all the pattern and technical work that probably went into creating all those torso paneled sections.

Lace 90's Cray-Cray:

Aruba Nicole Van Tellingen: Will someone please tell Nicole--and whoever designed this--that it's not 1994 but 2015. The gold lace mini dress with the acid orange/red tulle overskirt reminds me of a cheap knock-off of a late 80's/early 90's Christian Lacroix creation. Maybe she was trying to be "Designer Retro"...who knows.

Netherlands Margot Hanekamp: On a good note--Margot looks like she would be fun at a cocktail party! On a not-so-good note--this dress is a big ol' tacky mess. The gold lace, the "Dynasty"-like shoulder, the too short front, her hair style, THAT one TOO-BIG earring...Who told her this was a stylish look? Poor thang.

Polyester Madness:

British Virgin Islands Sasha Wintz: Looking at this gown hurts my eyes. There's so much polyester here in the cheap satin and cheap lace that I am afraid if someone with a lighter gets too close to her, she might catch on fire! On the design front, the horizontal ruching and lace-and-diamante top and the diamante trim on the dress...PLUS...the mermaid shape...this is just beyond tacky-licious.

Germany Albijona Muharremaj: When I look at this dress, all I can think of is an episode from "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding". There are so many things wrong with this: the cheap $2.99 a yard red stretch sequin fabric, the nude illusion with red sequin detail at the torso and then the poly chiffon back panels. She looks like the hostess in a very off-the-strip Vegas strip club.

Bridal Sale:

Namibia Steffi Van Wyk: This looks like a wedding dress one would find at a 70% end-of-the-year sale at David's Bridal. What was Steffi thinking? And that necklace??? Ayyyy Dios Mio!

Slovakia Lujza Strakova: Another bridal-like design that somehow was forced upon a very pretty contestant. On a good note, I can almost see something like this in a Chanel Haute Couture runway show but then again, it would be made of very expensive, very luxe, very beautiful fabrications and would look and fit impeccably. But this doesn't. It's A LOT, and A LOT of mess. And somehow, she thought that wearing this wasn't enough of a "look" so she had to wear THOSE feathered earrings. Please don't.

Sheer Hoochie:

Cyprus Rafaela Charalampous: Oh Rafaela. What were you (and your designer) thinking? OK, let's get this out of the way: it's a black netting dress black hot shorts underneath. And this considered stylish? Where? I don't even think the tackiest of the Kardashian sisters would have worn this, even before they were multi gazillionaires. If this is an example of Cyprus Fashion, I may have to question their taste level.

Do Not Focus on THAT Part of the Body:

Mexico Yamelin Ramirez: While I do like the top section with its interesting laser-cut lace, it's that twisted rosette detail that is quite HUGE and placed right in front of her you-know-what, that makes me put this design under the "Cray-Cray" section. I can't believe nobody looked at the placement of that skirt drape and thought it might look a bit awkward! This is a mess of a design.

Queen of Cray-Cray:

Sweden Natalia Fogelund: Just when you thought you'd seen a lot of Cray-Cray, in walked Miss World Sweden. Just take a look at this torn tulle black and white mess. It's like she went through a hurricane or tornado...or maybe a paper shredder. Wow. And for that, she gets my Top Cray-Cray prize for World Fashion Designer Dress award.

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Universe 2015 National Costumes Sneak Peak!

Universal Costumes: Collage of Miss Universe 2015 National Costumes (Clockwise from top: Vietnam, Thailand [middle], Curacao, Great Britain, Panama)--Miss Universe 2015 Beauty Pageant Las Vegas USA

December 20th is the date for the Finals of the 64th Annual Miss Universe Beauty Pageant. After WME/IMG took the helm from Donald Trump (Thank goodness!), this will be the first Miss Universe contest under the William Morris Entertainment and International Management Group global talent, sports, acting, theater, model agency. And the first time it will be televised by Fox.

Miss Universe 2014 Colombia's Paulina Vega and the 80 contestants vying for "Miss Universe 2015"--Las Vegas

The pageant will be held in The Axis at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino Las Vegas. Eighty contestants from all over the world will compete for the coveted title. The contestants have been in Las Vegas since December 1st taking part in all the exciting activities leading up to the Finals later this month. The very popular "National Costume" show isn't until December 16th but that doesn't prevent me from showing you a sneak peak of some of the contestants' costumes that I found researching the web...

Asia--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miss Myanmar May Thaw: Love this golden sequined costume depicting a traditional look from her native Myanmar. It's very "Indigenous Couture"; down to her Alexander McQueen-like sequined pumps!

Miss Malaysia Vanessa Tevi: I also love the intricate folding and  draping in this silk jacquard two piece costume featuring a bustier bra-top and side-slit skirt. The gold leaf accents do really blend well and end up fabulously on that amazing headdress.

Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach: I found this photo on the web of what is supposed to be the National Costume to be worn by Miss Philippines Universe Pia Wurtzbach. If it is true, it sure is super-fabulous! Love the traditional Filipina Butterfly sleeves (I call them the "Imelda" sleeves, thank you very much!), an the very couture-worthy straw over-skirt...wow. This is a "national costume" that could easily be in a Paris Haute Couture runway show.

Miss Singapore Lisa White: Local Singapore Couturier Frederick Lee designed this red costume, paying tribute to the Golden Jubilee as well as an homage to the Singapore Botanic Gardens which this year became the nation's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. A total of 50 orchids in varying sizes adorn the costume. The costume cost $6,000 and took over 200 hours to make.

Miss Thailand Aniporn Chalermburanawong: Aniporn chose to wear a costume inspired by--what else--the iconic Tuk Tuk , the very famous Thai mode of transportation. The unique costume was designed and created by cultural scholar Hirankrit Paipibulkul. The dress was made of chromium and decorated with real headlights that "Nat" can flash at her other 79 competitors. #LoveHer and #LoveThisCostume

Miss Vietnam Huong Pham: The stunning (and one of the favorites to take the "Miss Universe 2015" crown) Huong is wearing this very luxe Ao Dai--traditional Vietnamese ensemble--as her national costume. The creation was designed by Thuan Viet and features ivory and golden yellow silk, gold sequin details and a stupendous gold crown headdress.

Europe-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miss Denmark Cecilie Willemberg: The Copenhagen native is wearing a white swan costume featuring a large swan headdress and wings plus a feathered and tulle skirt. It's very "Victoria's Secret" Runway Show fab.

Miss Great Britain Narissara France: Narissara went with the British flag and fab "Show Girl" feathers. She looks quite sexy.

Latin America and Caribbean-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miss Argentina Claudia Barrionuevo: Claudia went with a more "Carnival" look with her "Miss Universe 2015" Argentina national costume.

Miss Bahamas Toria Nichole: The statuesque Toria (she's 6' 1" !) is wearing a fish-inspired costume, created from nude illusion (the bodysuit) and multicolored sequins. This is one of the sexiest flying fish I have ever seen!

Miss Bolivia Romina Rocamonje: This photo is a sneak peak of what Romina will be wearing. The costume is white and features silver sequins and a large feathered shoulder piece a la "Victoria's Secret Runway Show". What do you guys think?

Miss Cayman Islands Tonie Chisholm: Caribeean beauty queen, Tonie Chisholm of the Cayman Islands, understandably went with a coral/sea-inspired costume. The look has a red sequined bodysuit and over-sized "coral" back over-skirt and neck/shoulder piece.

Miss Costa Rica Brenda Castro: Brenda is wearing a fun Costa Rican national costume interpretation featuring a crop top, full mini skirt, headdress crown and flora-and-fauna "wings". Oh and then there's her fruit "basket".

Miss Curacao Kanisha Sluis: I absolutely LOVE this costume
on "Miss Universe Curacao". The colors, the sequined body suit, the
feathers...it truly is a celebration of everything about Curacao.
 The
design is a tribute to the local queen of
art, a former Miss Curacao (1966) & Miss Amity at Miss Universe 1967,
 Elizabeth "Nena" Sanchez
(photo above). The main subjects of Nena's paintings are typical native
cottages, tropical flowers, windows, exuberant sea views and blue goddesses.

Miss Guatemala Jeimmy Aburto: Jeimmy went with the Pre-Columbian costume theme with her national costume, as see above. I think it's pretty great. I just always wonder: who is paying for the EXTRA baggage fees...when trying to transport something like this?

Miss Mexico Wendy Esparza: Wendy is wearing a Native/Indigenous costume representing a Diva Empress entitled "XOCHIQUETZAL". It was designed by Eduardo Estrada.

Miss Panama Gladys Brandao Amaya: Gladys wears a Pre-Columbian costume featuring a HUGE red feathered back-piece, heavily sequined gold and multi-jeweled headdress and matching top and skirt piece. This surely can be in contention for Most Elaborate National Costume/Miss Universe 2015.

Miss Paraguay Myriam Arevalos: Myrianm is wearing a costume depicting the "Garra Guarani" or "Guarani Claw". It was designed by Alfredo Gaona and features over 4,500 crystals

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Earth 2015 Finals: Winner "Miss Philippines Earth" Angelia Ong + EVENING GOWN Recap: The Good and Oh Dear!

Gowns & Tiaras: Miss Earth 2015 Finals, Vienna Austria

December is quickly becoming "International Beauty Pageant Month"--Last Friday was the Finals of Miss Supranational 2015 with over 80 contestants competing for the crown and Miss Paraguay eventually winning. December 19th is the date of the Miss World 2015 Finals occurring in Sanya People's Republic of China, and on the next night, December 20th, the Miss Universe Pageant will take place in Las Vegas. And on top of it all, in this blog, I will be talking about the Miss Earth 2015 Finals which happened this past Saturday in Vienna Austria...

Contestants at the Miss Earth 2015 Finals, Vienna Austria

The Miss Earth Beauty Pageant--organized by Carousel Productions and based in Manila Philippines--is considered part of the top "Grand Slam" International Beauty Pageants (the Most Important ones in the eyes of fans, pageant followers, TV and web viewership, publicity, how many contestants compete, etc.) and stands out as not just about beauty, but it also, according to Wikipedia "promotes environmental awareness". The reigning titleholder uses her year promoting specific projects that deal with the environment and earth-related issues...as well as looks FAB-u-LOUS and beautiful!

This year's winner was...

Two for Two: Miss Earth Philippines 2015 Angelia Ong is crowned Miss Earth 2015 by the previous titleholder, also from the Philippines, Jamie Herrell. This was the first time in the 15-year history of the pageant that the same country won back-to-back.

Angelia is 25 years old, stands 1. 72 m (5' 7 1/2") tall and hails from Iloilo City, Philippines. She is Filipina-Chinese.

Now, time to discuss THE EVENING GOWNS!!!

Vienna Miss Earth Gown Ball: The stage and contestants during the Miss Earth 2015 Finals Evening Gown Competition, Vienna Austria

I want to discuss the Top 16 Semifinalists and their Gowns--starting with the eventual winner, Miss Earth Philippines...

Philippines Angelia Ong: Angelia wore an off-the-shoulder gold-hued gown featuring a heavily beaded and flower appliqued top/torso with a fit-and-flare gown silhouette. She looked elegant and sleek (like her hair!). At one point, however, I was a bit scared that there might be a "Wardrobe Malfunction" when it seemed like there was a peek-a-boo of her...ummm...nipple. It might just be a shadow but seriously, look at the photos above and let me know your thoughts.

Australia Dayanna Grageda: Dayanna got the "Miss Earth--Air" title on Saturday's finals. She also wore a gold sequined gown. It was backed with nude illusion. I have to be honest here but I felt she looked a bit old. Her makeup and hair were a bit too "Pageant Severe" and aged her. But obviously, the judges didn't care. Also, I was a bit perplexed by her gown, especially the top section at the bust (what is with the busts??!!). I just think those sequined scrolls right over the breasts were a big NO-NO. Imagine this on an actress at a big awards show red carpet; she would get SLAMMED by the "Red Carpet Fashion Police". And with good reason.

USA Brittany Payne: Brittany won the "Miss Earth--Water" title. I loved her lilac sequined lace and tulle gown. It was elegant, chic and well-made. Her clean makeup and no-fuss "messy" updo also was fresh and modern.

Brazil Thiessa Sickert: Thiessa (love her name!) won the "Miss Earth--Fire" title. She wore this strapless sequined applique gown with a side front slit. The lace and sequined embroidery looks expensive but I just think we have "been there/done that"; it's predictable and not Gown Exciting. I could have seen this same style in a pageant in 2002. That's not good. On a nice note: she looked flawless from the neck up--I loved her hair and makeup.

Austria Sophie Totzauer: I liked this 1920's-inspired "batwing" blouson ivory sequined gown on Sophie. It was Retro yet modern and not at all "Pageant"-like (like Miss Brazil's). I just had two issues: What's going on with her black bra showing in her cleavage? And WOWSA: those earrings are HUUUUGE!!!!

Chile Natividad Leiva: Natividad wore a strapless ivory mermaid-shaped gown with silver sequins and lace applique. the gown fit her very nicely but it was a tad too "Prom-a-licious". At least, she didn't do the Prom Pageant Betty Up-do. Gracias a Dios!

Venezuela Andrea Rosales: Andrea wore a silver sequined and tulle gown also featuring a mermaid shape. The top portion was STUNNING. But it was the bottom part--the heavy "smooshed" tulle that looked a bit odd. On a good note, her hair and makeup were on-point...kind-of; it was a little "too mucheey" but it still worked for me.

Czech Republic Karolina Manisova: Oh Karolina, not sure where I begin with this. She wore a bright pink ball gown that had big multicolored flower appliques on it.  One word: tacky.

France Alyssa Wurtz: Alyssa looked gorgeous and red carpet-ready in this sleek strapless sequin and tulle red column gown. The fit was nice, the style was chic, and her hair and (lack of) accessories were just right. Vive la France.

Guam Skye Celine Baker: Skye wore this Art Deco-inspired gold and black sequined gown with a batteau neckline and open back. This was impacting and quite nice for her. I also liked her side-swept hair and great makeup. Good job Guam!

Hungary Dorina Lepp: Dorina wore this mermaid shaped green and gold jacquard gown. It had a high neckline, long sleeves and an open back. While I appreciated the fabrication, I almost felt she looked too covered up.

Mauritius Katia Moochooram: Katia tried to "bring it" with this one shoulder draped gown with chiffon layers and sequined panels. The original design got my attention but I just don't think she was strong enough of a pageant contender to really bring this dramatic style of gown to life.

Mongolia Bayartsetseg Altangerel: Speaking of DRAMA...Miss Earth Mongolia did bring it. Even though I wasn't a fan of this gown (a little too Pageant Prom-a-Licious, too much going on--pearl sequins, silver jeweled crystals, poly satin, tulle, nude illusion, mermaid shape...Good Lord!), Bayartsetseg really did BRING IT! From the minute she stepped onto the stage, she was all DIVA.

Scotland Amy Meisak: Amy wore this red tulle and applique lace mermaid shaped gown at the Miss Earth 2015 Finals. It's very "Lady in Red". But that's not what I want to discuss. I want to talk about WHAT are those white satin straps hanging from her armpit/armhole?? Is that her bra? Is that the Hang Tape? Whatever it is, it was distracting and a big wardrobe No-No. Fire the backstage dressers! Now.

Finally...

Ukraine Viktoria Orel: Viktoria also wore a red gown. Hers, however was not a mermaid shape but more of a fitted torso and full skirt shape. I liked the unusual butterfly-like applique on her top and the gathered draping on the front of the skirt/gown was nice. I would have just done without those earrings. Otherwise, nice job!

Congratulations to "Miss Earth 2015" Angelia Ong (second from right) and her court of beauties!
