GAP Southport Styld.by Event

On September 10th GAP outlets nation-wide celebrated the changing seasons with a stylish shopping event.  I headed to GAP Southport, here in Chicago to drool over distressed denim and everything flannel!

The Styld.by event, ran from 6pm to 8pm and included personal styling, sips and snacks, and featured looks styled by The Zoe Report.  To complete shopper's looks, Solo Salon was onsite for braided hairstyles and buns.  Blogger Peggy of Hallways Are My Runways hosted the event, donning a black and white, checkered button-down shirt and slim-fit jeans, all by GAP of course!

If you missed out on this event, don't worry, keep upcoming Styld.by events on your fashion radar by checking out http://www.styld-by.com/en-us.   I'll meet you there with my favorite, distressed, sexy-boyfriend jeans on!

Jason David Frank: It’s Still Morphin’ Time

In late August of 1993, America was introduced to five teenagers with attitude.  Using the power of the dinosaur, these five ordinary teens protected the world from the forces of evil and inspired a generation of viewers to believe that, even if they were ordinary, they could still accomplish extraordinary things.  They were the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.  It was during this time that 20-year-old Jason David Frank got his first taste of stardom.  Joining the series as Tommy Oliver, a young martial artist new to town, Jason quickly captured the imagination of viewers everywhere as he donned green and gold and battled the other rangers, having been put under an evil spell by the show’s antagonist, Rita Repulsa.  As the show progressed, Rita’s spell was broken, Tommy joined the other five rangers in the fight for good, and soon found himself leading the team.

It is now August of 2014 and Jason, now 40, has just arrived in Rosemont, Illinois for the annual Chicago Wizard World Comic Con Convention. Since his start with the Power Rangers 21 years prior, he has played five different rangers as Tommy Oliver and has made more appearances on the show than any other actor while the Power Rangers franchise has endured for over two decades and undergone multiple reincarnations, making it one of the most widely successful children’s television programs in history. Jason is also one of the most sought after celebrities at fan conventions like Comic Con.

We had the unique opportunity to sit down with “JDF” for just a few minutes and get inside the mind of the man behind arguably the most popular Power Ranger of all time.

We first asked Jason what keeps driving him to attend conventions like Wizard World all across the country year after year.  His response was quickly summed up with his two opening words.  “The fans,” he told us, followed by, “It’s the energy from people that keeps me going.”  “I really love what I’m doing,”  he continued.  “It has nothing to do with money.  I never wanted to make this like a job.”  This is evidenced by the fact that, since beginning his rounds on the convention circuit, he has never charged an appearance fee for his services.

After hearing this response to our opening question, we became quite curious as to how one man manages to balance his commitment to the fans with the other aspects of his life like his family, acting career, overseeing his own business, and hobbies which include skydiving, in which he holds a world record.  “That’s definitely hard,” he said.  His secret?  Time budgeting.  Practically every second of every day is accounted for before it even begins.  Through time budgeting, he is able to juggle appearances and running a business while still being allowed time to spend with his family, train, enjoy his hobbies, and still get some much needed leisure time.  He goes on to say, “You just have to strive to be the best you can and you just can’t ever give up.  People are here to see me.  I want to give them my positives and they want to take the positives.  I don’t want to give them my negatives.”  On top of this, Jason is always vigilant of the fans’ appreciation of his efforts.  “The more I see that, the more I want to work and when you see results you want to work harder.”

Switching gears, we began talking with Jason about the franchise that brought him world fame.  “Why do you think the Power Ranger franchise has reached the level of success that it has over 21 years and through multiple generations?” we inquired.  “Personally,” he begins, “my feelings are that it’s colorful, it has Karate, at one point it was like a soap opera (with a continuing storyline), and you can relate to certain characters.  I think the secret is that it’s never changed.  The Shell Monster still looks like the Shell Monster it did 20 years ago.  It’s branded really well for people.  The minute you start changing the brand, people start getting lost.”  He compared it to owning a Porsche.  “The body style never changes.”

Moving on, we asked Jason about his multiple appearances on various incarnations of Power Rangers and his involvement in the upcoming “Ranger War” taking place later this fall.  “It’s something to look forward to.  It’s going to be, I think, epic, but not enough.  I think you all are going to want more.”  He then hinted at a possible, but not yet certain green ranger spin-off sometime in the not-too-distant future.  “We’ll know very soon if that’s going to happen and, if it does, it’s going to be huge.”

With time running short, we had one more question for Jason.  Since we have both been Power Ranger fans since we were kids, we knew we had a unique opportunity to ask a question that has been on the minds of Ranger fans for years.  “Out of the five rangers you’ve played, we’re curious to know, does Jason David Frank have a favorite?” we asked.  “The good thing is there’s no wrong answer to that, because I was all five of them,” he said, “but the green ranger was the first time I was with the rangers, so it’s the one stuck in my head.”  With time now expired, we ended our line of questioning, thanked Jason for taking some time to speak with us, snapped a quick photo with our childhood hero, and bid farewell.

It is clear that “JDF” has no plans to slow down anytime in the near future.  His commitment and dedication to the fans who adore and admire him seems to be all the fuel he needs to stay focused on his goal of bringing joy to the fans whom he credits with bringing him the level of success he has attained.  Between all of his success and the pride he takes in giving back to the fans, it looks like his is a journey worthy of being called “morphenomenal.”

Halfstack Fall Issue Sneak Peeks: Meet Elizabeth Lyons

Written by: Jennifer Lezan as featured in Halfstack's Fall Issue

She’s the All American girl. A gorgeous, sweet and funny young lady with an infectious laugh that is sure to win the hearts of many. On top of that, the girl can sing. It’s no surprise that The Country Music Association dubbed Elizabeth Lyons an artist to watch this year. Her ITunes chart topping single “Party Rules” has been on the new and noteworthy page and has been bumping in many a country girl’s jeep all summer long. As a Chicago native, she’s a country singer with a city girl heart. Halfstack had the opportunity to meet Elizabeth at The Windy City BBQ and she graciously took some time to complete an interview with us.  Read on to learn more about the country music scene’s sweetheart: Elizabeth Lyons.

Q&A

Can you tell us a bit more about yourself, how you started and what inspired you to chase your country star dreams?

I love to laugh, make people smile and give big hugs! I have been in 18 musical theatre productions. I have always loved singing & dancing & piano & music! My parents said your college education comes before the country star music dream & said I could go to Nashville and pursue my country star dreams but only if I attended college while pursuing the dream. I am thankful for their strong belief in education. I'm proud to say I did it: pursued music dream & graduated from Vanderbilt University a year ago...sometimes I forget I have a degree in film. Until someone asks me about movies then I won't stop talking about classic Hollywood films or Rom Coms....or I decide to make a funny video at Wal-Mart in between a radio interview or boating with my family just because its what I love to do. My sisters and I used to make music videos, a very different experience than when I made my first music video. I went from dancing in my sisters room to dancing in a field with one of the best directors (Mason Dixon) in country music. Traveling to do a tour in the Midwest the day the music video charted #8 on iTunes Country Music Video Charts & #18 on All-Genre was the best way to celebrate as I'm from the Midwest!

People question the Midwest for being country: "those fly over states" Jason Aldean sings about are some of the top corn producing agricultural states in the world- some of the best soil/ or in the words of FGL: Dirt ! Recently announced Garth Brooks will open his tour in Chicago: 5 sold out shows- so I know country is alive and well in the heartland of America. Country became a part of my heart and soul spending every childhood summer in Northern Iowa: picking strawberries in my bikini, fishing for cat fish with my Grandpa, and making strawberry jam with my Grandma.

While I love the country, I'm also a city girl who loves to meticulously read menus at restaurants and window shop... Always on the search for good shoes and anything sparkly, diamonds, cheetah, or leather. I always try and look my best but my sorority sister and I used to laugh I usually look horrible when I see my crush! I always had a position in my sorority house but never wore their shirts because I'd rather wear a cute dress. Greek life definitely helped me get my first album (co-wrote all 6 songs EP) to chart #42 on iTunes Country Album Charts and All Time Bestsellers Albums Under $8 for months & #10 on Billboard Heatseekers East North Central. To celebrate I went and got some corn bread and made my Rice Krispie treats (which are the best! I swear a full stick of butter is the key).

I made 50 batches for all the radio stations I visited driving over 9500 miles this summer I was reminded how much I love to sing to the Spice Girls Notorious BIG Dixie Chicks and Rolling Stones. All the driving was worth it because I got to meet all kinds of people and the song has charted #87 on media base and #96 on music Row.

Halfstack Fall Issue Sneak Peek: Off to Grammy Camp

Written by: Cora Vasseur as featured in Halfstack's Fall Issue.

Chicago is rich in music history and prowess across the genres. It was no surprise when several Chicagoland high school students were selected for the GRAMMY Foundation’s prestigious GRAMMY Camp. In their 10th year of existence, there will be 173 high school students total from across the country and the globe. Some students will be flying in from Japan, China, and England to learn what it takes to make it in today’s music industry.

The GRAMMY Foundation was established in 1988 to foster the betterment of American recorded music through programs and events that involve music industry professionals with different communities.

“We always wanted to have another vehicle for those high school students who wanted more in-depth information and instruction about the various careers in the business of music,” says David R. Sears, Executive Education Director. “It’s day long music industry career day.”

"The GRAMMY Foundation's GRAMMY Camp has become our signature program that provides young people with an extraordinarily in-depth experience, giving them a genuine sense of what it's like to have a career in the music industry," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation. "Each and every GRAMMY Camper benefits from this program and takes with them valuable lessons learned as they continue their music journeys."

Candidates apply online for one or more of the eight career tracks, which include instrumental performance, vocal performance, audio engineering, music journalism, music business, video production and motion graphics, songwriting and electronic music production. Campers are selected on many factors, but especially two key elements.

Pop Star Taylor Dayne Redeems Star Status with New Single and Motherhood

Singer and songwriter, Taylor Dayne may have been M.I.A. for a while now yet her tenacious spirit proves to the world that she still has what it takes to reach higher heights in her singing career. And her new single, Dreaming, is putting Taylor Dayne right back where she belongs: to the top of the charts. “I wrote the song three years ago,” she explained. “It was officially released a few days ago, so I am pretty excited about that.”

Although Taylor Dayne has received worldwide fame during the years as singer and songwriter, just like any other celebrity; she has decided to take a break from the spotlight and focus on life’s little treasures: friends and family. “Right now, I live in Los Angeles. It is known as the entertainment capital, so my life is pretty balanced, thus far. It is conducive to what I need to do as a mother and entertainer.” She resumed. “I have great friends who are very loving and supportive towards me and what I do.”

To the world, Taylor Dayne is known as one of the most talented singers in the music diversion, but she is more than what others perceive her to be, especially when she is not entertaining millions of fans. “Yes, I am a singer and songwriter, but I have other talents that not too many people know about. When I am not on the road, I like to study different people and things. I can’t really explain why; it’s just something that interests me and I like to cook, too. Also, I am interested in learning more about television production.”

Taylor Dayne may have been a fan of pop music since childhood, but other musical genres makes her dance and snap her fingers as well, such as rap and rhythm-and-blues music. “If given the chance, I would like to work with [Dr. Dre], Justin Timberlake and [Charlie Wilson]. Those guys are very talented in the singing and songwriting area,” she concluded, leaving the interview to a close as she gets ready to do what she does best: give one heck of a performance.

Alcaufar Vell Hotel & Restaurant Menorca

As many of you will know, Menorca has a very special place in my heart. My family bought an apartment there a few years ago after falling in love with the beautiful, peaceful island. Given that we have a base there, I have never felt the need to stay anywhere else, however on mine and Oli’s trip a few weeks ago I wanted to do something special for his Birthday, the date of which fell on our return to England. Alcaufar Vell is a stunning rural mansion, set in lush spacious grounds, near to the town of Sant Lluís in Menorca, and a 15 minutes drive from the capital Mahón. Oli and I have enjoyed the Alcaufar Vell restaurant before, but it had been a dream of ours to stay at the hotel; with a special occasion as an excuse, we took the plunge and enjoyed a magical 24 hours of Alcaufar Vell luxury.

Read on for my full review of Alcaufar Vell . . .

How we got there

Menorca is best explored by car, we hired one for our trip and so drove to Alcaufar Vell for checkin at 4.30. I had planned on keeping our stay a secret, but as I found out that we could checkin in the afternoon I told Ols in the morning over coffee. I think it was actually more fun because we both spent the day super excited. Alcaufar Vell do provide a service from the airport - about 15 mins away - on request.

Our room
On arrival we were greeted by incredibly friendly staff who took us to our room. We were given an upgrade into one of the outbuilding suites, complete with private patio. The decor is rustic - exposed beams, white washed walls and pale stone. The light which flooded our room was beautiful, and in the evening I lay awake looking at the stars through our farmhouse-style windows. The island has very little light pollution and so I always find the Menorcan night sky mesmerising. The bed was incredibly comfy and we had an amazing nights sleep. The rooms are well catered for in terms of robes, towels and toiletries. The patio out back was a sweet private area perfect for lounging with a book and a coffee; as we were only staying one night though we didn’t make use of it much as we mainly explored the grounds of the main hotel.  The mini bar is stocked with free beer and soft drinks.

Eating & Drinking

What we ate:

Dinner:

Oli: Trio of duck (shared), Lamb cutlets with local vegetables.
Monica: Trio of duck (shared), Tuna steak with local vegetables.

Breakfast:

Oli: Breakfast buffet of pastries, fruit and yoghurt, followed by eggs and bacon. Coffee and fresh orange juice.
Monica: Same!

The restaurant at Alcaufar Vell is notorious for its exquisite dining. The menu is Mediterranean - my favourite! - and features traditional Menorcan dishes. A lot of the produce is grown in the grounds of the hotel, and you can either eat in the dining room or underneath a canopy of olive trees in the Summer months. As we visited in late May we ate inside but if you are able to eat outside I would take the opportunity, the trees are strewn with lights - it is enchanting and so romantic. In the afternoon Oli and I took a short taxi ride to the stunning Binifadet Vineyard where we sampled wine and ate fabulous antipasti; I would definitely recommend making this trip if you are staying at the hotel as it is inexpensive to get a taxi; from other areas on the island it can be costly. With our appetites suitably whetted, we returned to Alcaufar Vell for pre-dinner cocktails. These were GOOD! The bar tender at the hotel, as we discovered, has won awards (!) for his skill. Oli had a mojito and I had a cosmopolitan. The cocktails were so good we forwent wine over dinner and opted for a steady stream of mojitos - normally I would say this is lethal but in fact we both woke up the next morning feeling perky - the mark of good alcohol (I think?!).

In the morning we enjoyed a coffee in the courtyard outside the main mansion, the grounds are so peaceful it was heaven. For breakfast we made our way to the dining room again. I had read on Trip Advisor that Alcaufar Vell provide a hot menu but that it is not immediately obvious, when we enquired we were told that they did indeed do a hot menu - music to mine and Oli’s ears! I LOVE a leisurely breakfast - who doesn’t?! - and so we stretched out our time enjoying fresh fruit, pastries, yoghurt, followed by eggs and bacon. It makes such a difference having fresh organic ingredients and everything had so much flavour.

Lounging

The hotel were very relaxed about checkout and we felt comfortable being a little over, we left our room at around 11.30. We were told that we would be welcome to use Alcaufar Vell’s facilities for the remainder of the day which included a beautiful pool and extensive grounds for walking. We took full advantage of this and spent till the late afternoon lounging by the pool, reading and admiring the beautiful wild flowers.

Price

Around  €200 pn for a double room. Check here for current rates.
Around  €100 for dinner for two, with drinks.

In Summary

Alcaufar Vell is a peaceful, private hotel set in stunning grounds; and although we didn’t take advantage of it, it is within walking distance of the beach. The overall vibe is relaxed, unpretentious and elegant. True to the ethos of Menorca, Alcaufar Vell places importance on fresh produce and nature, and the food is some of the most delicious I have ever tasted. The service is genuinely kind, and thoughtful. Alcaufar Vell is the perfect romantic getaway; I can whole heartedly recommend staying here for a special occasion or for the duration of your holiday. A stay at Alcaufar Vell is not inexpensive, but the luxury is well worth the cost. A one night stay was perfect for Oli and I for a special occasion. The hotel can also be hired for weddings.

I couldn't help but take a tonne of pictures of our beautiful stay . . .

Have you guys ever visited Menorca? Where have you stayed if so? Or can you recommend any other beautiful romantic getaways? You guys always have great recommendations!

Today I'm going to head to a local open garden, the UK is so beautiful right now! Follow along on Instagram.

Have an awesome day all!

Love,

Grange Park Opera

Dress: Three Floor c/o, Heels: Topshop old but similar, Earrings: Swarovski c/o, Clutch: Lulu Guinness c/o, Cuff: Old but similar, Sunglasses (seen below): Claire's c/o

Last week Oli and I attended the Grange Park Opera and had THE most incredible time. When we were first dating Oli took me to the Grange Park estate, which is close to where he grew up, and the sheer SCALE and beauty of the place completely took my breath away. Since then we have spent many occasions perusing the grounds, spending the Summer admiring the lush nature and the Winter admiring the estate for its romantic grandeur. From the outside it is difficult to imagine how adorned the building's interiors are - we have tried to peek through the windows before - and now that we have had the pleasure of seeing the inside up close I can confirm it is quite simply stunning.

Read on for my account of my first ever Opera . . .

First up lets get the style bit nailed!
What to wear?! The Opera is definitely a formal affair. I saw many ladies in elegant silk evening jackets teamed with opulent trousers - not quite so many dresses as I was expecting. You could wear a floor length hem but a mid length gown is totally appropriate too and jewellery is a MUST. The Opera drew a creative crowd and so the colour pallets on display made for great people watching; in particular I was style crushing on a woman in a deep fuchsia jacket and great dramatic jewels - she embodied the ultimate mediterranean woman which reminded me of my Italian Mama when she dons her finest.
For me, I had planned on wearing this Karen Millen number (now on sale!), but in the end it FELT like an evening for this powder blue Three Floor dress which I have been saving for a special occasion. My earrings are Swarovski and I L-O-V-E them! For the guys, tuxedos were the order of the evening, Oli wore a classic black tux, but a lot of men also wore white jackets which looked super swish. I think Ols has got his heart set on a white one for next year.
Around this time of year there is a lot of speculation about heels on grass - the polo, the races, weddings -  I wore my most towering stilettos and was OK. It definitely requires a bit if balance but it is doable, aim to put your wight on the ball of your foot and minimise walking time.
An embellished flat would be my choice of alternative, these J.Crew flats have 40% off right now.

SHOP

Dressing over, on to the running order . . .
3.30pm - grounds open for guests to enjoy cocktails and canapés. We hand our picnic to one of the Grange Park staff for the interval. Walk around the Grange Park grounds and bask in the beauty of the gorgeous location. Begin to check other guests out!
5.20pm - call for first half. The theatre sits 550 people which I am told is a relatively small amount, the performance feels epic yet intimate, and we watch Peter Grimes which is a tale about a fisherman who is embroiled in a suspected murder. The orchestra was phenomenal and Oli and I particularly enjoyed the chorus line.
6.27pm - interval. This was SO much fun. Having given our picnic to one of the bar staff on our arrival, we discovered that our food was waiting for us on a table in a large marquee where all other guests were too. It was such a pleasure to see everyone in their tuxedos and gowns enjoying yummy food which they had brought, and cracking open a few bottles of wine (you can bring your own!) Ols and I packed a healthy dinner of lentil rainbow salad, salmon and roasted veg - and balanced it out with champagne! You can order a picnic instead, or dine in the mansion, see details here.
8.07pm - call for 2nd half. This is slightly longer than the first, and I enjoyed it even more, there is a clever scene where a building is opened up to reveal a boat which Oli and I both loved. The set for Peter Grimes was out of this world.

9.49pm - end opera. The second the lights went down the whole room erupted into applause, more applause, and then some extra loud applause for good measure. Some of the characters got a particularly large ovation, my favourites were two 'naughty nieces' who were hilarious.
10pm - backstage tour and piano recital. Myself, Oli and a few others had the honour of visiting the backstage area of the theatre after the Opera. We felt so lucky to be able to stand on stage and gets the 'actors view' - there were even a few cast members regaling guests. We had a glass of champagne and walked through the gorgeous Grange house which felt, and looked, like a Venetian palace with semi-ruined interiors and walls draped with silk paintings.

Opera Visit Summary

As a complete Opera novice I had THE most magical first time with Grange Park this season. It is so fun to engage in something completely left-field of what Oli and I would normally do in our free time, and an occasion to properly dress up is such a pleasure. It is super romantic to go as a couple to the opera, but equally I think it would be really fun with a big group of friends as you can have a huge picnic together. We have already been raving about it, and next year we are planning a big trip.

Grange Park is an easy journey from London so it is doable to visit the Opera and head home inane evening - the nearest rail station would be Winchester. If you have the time though I would advise staying in the nearby town of Alresford and making a mini break of it. There is SO much to do in the pretty town, gorgeous cafes, shops and pubs. The Woolpack is a beautiful local hotel with a short taxi ride to Grange Park.

Thank you so much to the gorgeous team at Grange Park Opera for having us as your guests. Under 30's can get tickets for £30 - we will definitely be getting in on this deal next year!
Over 30's it is worth ringing the box office to see which deals are on, details at the bottom of this page

Have you guys been to any special events yet this Summer? Would you like to visit the Opera too? And importantly what would be your dream Opera attire?!

Hope you guys have kicked off an ace week!

Love,

MB x
