Red Carpet Minute: 2012 Kennedy Center Honors Red Carpet!

Washington DC Red Carpet:

US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, White House Washington DC, Kennedy Center Honors 2012 Reception

Last night, at a star-studded gala, US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed honorees of the
2012 Kennedy Center Honors at the White House in Washington, DC.

This year the John F. Kennedy Center of Performing Arts recognized seven individuals including Blues musician Buddy Guy, actor and director Dustin Hoffman, talk show host and comedian David Letterman, ballerina Natalia Makarova, as well as musicians John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant of
rock band Led Zeppelin, for their lifetime contributions to American
culture through the performing arts.

The President and Mrs. Obama received the honorees and members of the
Artists Committee who nominate them, along with the Kennedy Center Board
of Trustees at the White House prior to a gala performance at the Kennedy Center Opera House. The telecast of the 35th Annual Kennedy Center Honors will be
aired on CBS as a two-hour primetime special on Wednesday, December 26
at 9:00 PM.

Kennedy Center Honors

Prior to last night's White House Reception and Gala at the Kennedy Center Opera House,
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton
hosted a dinner for
the 2012 Kennedy Center honorees at the U.S. Department of State in Washington DC, on Saturday December 1st, inviting the 2012 honorees, actors,
politicians and DC society and past honorees as well.

The Secretary of State did not wear a pantsuit (Thank Goodness!) but in fact, looked beautiful in a teal-colored satin gown featuring a scooped neckline, long sleeves, and an exaggerated waist sash accessorized by a classic diamond choker necklace. I love the cut and color of this gown on her. Her hair (always a debated subject), looked elegant--no scrunchie there (Thank Goodness Part Two).

Actress Meryl Streep (a 2011 Kennedy Center Honoree) attended with husband, sculptor Don Gummer; She looked very chic in a creme-colored gazar dress with batwing sleeves, waist tie and full at-the-knee skirt. The dress was very "Dior New Look".

Golden First Lady: US First Lady Michelle Obama dazzled in a gold lame gown with a fitted and gathered midriff band, with attached floor-length full skirt and a jewel-encrusted "armor" top neckline/armhole yoke detail. The gown was from the...

2012 Honorees Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin-looking quite nice in those tuxedos

2012 Honoree David Letterman and wife Regina Lasko--I love the modern abstract watercolor-like print of her gown.

2012 Honoree Dustin Hoffman with wife Lisa Gottsegen--That gown is EssssSTUNNING! So Paris Couture, the side-pleated drape, the folded gold-contrast above-bust detail; it's dramatic, lookes expensive and makes a definite statement. There are not many situations women can wear gowns such as this, but the Kennedy Center Honors Gala, is definitely one of them! I do wish she would have done something a bit more special with her hair.

Ballerina Natalia Makarova: DYING for her look. Only a Diva Ballerina can pull this off--sequined red gown with matching turban and floor-length mink coat. This is what I want to wear when I get to be her age!!

Couple Guests:

Foo Fighter Dave Grohl and wife Jordyn Blum Grohl: Jordyn looks gorgeous in this printed full gown--it's very Oscar de la Renta meets Carolina Herrera. This shape and style of gown IS the definition of Washington DC! It screams High Society WASP Trust Funder, classic, and elegantly safe. And the print itself says "I'm young and still cool!" Well done Jordyn!

Alec Baldwin and wife Hilaria Thomas: Both Alec and his wife, Hilaria look handsome and perfect for such a gala. Her peplum-ed wine-red strapless gown was dramatic and still had the right "Washington DC" elements of looking regal and de la Renta/Herrera-like.

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber: Naomi wore a figure-hugging cobalt blue gown from Roland Mouret which had origami-like folds and pleats at the asymmetrical neckline (a Mouret staple) fitted from waist to knee and then a flared bottom section. I think she looked FAB! The only thing I was worried about was that stain on her hip area...NO Hors d'oeuvres before Galas!!!

The Ladies:

Caroline Kennedy: Resplendent in an indigo-blue short-sleeve gown fitted at the waist. I'm assuming it's from Carolina Herrera because she always wears her designs. But if there's anyone out in the web-o-sphere who could correct me, I'd be happy to be schooled.

Choreographer Debbie Allen: Two words--Oh huney! I LOVE ME some Debbie Allen. And I like that necklace. And her hair looks great. But...What is going on with her lack of a push-up undergarment? And what is that fringe-like coat? I just can't even continue because I love Ms. Allen too much.

"Big Brother" and "The Talk" host Julie Chen: This is a very "Beauty Pageant 101 Gown" and maybe that's why I like it! It looks expensive and well-constructed--the violet-colored applique over nude bodice with matching violet fitted floor-length skirt/gown. She could easily be a Miss Universe contestant in this and I would still give her a high "Evening Gown" score.

"Wonder Woman" Lynda Carter: Darling...would I expect anything less than a fitted Duchesse satin bustier with black crystal trim, a fit-to-flare floor-length skirt and fur shawl...from Miss Lynda Carter? And the answer is "NO". This woman is sixty-one years old and looks 45. Whatever she's drinking. I want it.

"30 Rock" star Tina Fey: Actress and Comedian Tina Fey wore a gold lace gown featuring long sleeves, fitted silhouette and side draped detail. I think she looked slim and elegant. An unexpected color for Tina (she ALWAYS wears black). Very Lady Like. Well done Tina Fey!

Aretha Franklin: Last but certainly, not least, it's MISS Aretha Franklin. The Diva wore a powder pink custom Princess-seamed gown in a shiny double-face silk satin with caviar/pearl beading at the strapless neckline. One can assume that inside that gown, there is some MAJAH built-in corsetry happening and whoever designed and created this needs to get all the props they deserve! I think she looks perfect. It is difficult for ladies of her size to wear strapless but she did it and did it RIGHT! It fits her perfectly. R-E-S-P-E-C-T indeed.
