New Audi A3 Black Edition Models Launched in the UK

Audi is enhancing its entire A3 line-up in the UK with the introduction of new Black Edition versions of the three-door, five-door Sportback and Cabriolet A3 models. Though one would expect that the blacked-out A3 would be offered only in black color, the special edition A3 models are also available with the no-cost option of Ibis White and the extra cost metallic options Phantom Black, Misano Red and Monza Silver. Taking the top S line model as its basis, the new limited run A3 range feature dark titanium 18-inch S line design alloy wheels, a de-chromed front grille and window surroundings and, in the Cabriolet versions, black surrounds for the roll bars and the shoulder line. Furthermore, the A3 Black Edition models come equipped with standard fit Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps.

Inside, the limited run Black Editions are marked out by high gloss Piano black inlays and a flat-bottomed multi-function steering wheel. In addition to the standard equipment of the S line package, the special edition A3's also feature a high output Bose speaker system and acoustic rear parking sensors.

The new Black Edition specification is available in conjunction with the 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engines with 160HP and 200HP respectively, and the two 2.0 TDI common rail diesel engines (140HP and 170HP). While it carries a premium of £905 over the equivalent S line model in each case, Audi supports that when the additional equipment it offers is taken into account, it represents a customer saving of £675 on the A3 Black Edition and £650 on the A3 Cabriolet Black Edition.

GM's Holden to Build New Compact Model Based on Opel Astra & Chevy Cruze

The official teaser sketch you see above gives us our first glimpse of Holden's upcoming, Australian built compact car that will available in late 2010 in both four-door sedan and hatchback versions. The yet unnamed compact model will be based on GM's global Delta small car architecture that underpins the Chevy Cruze as well as the next-generation Opel / Vauxhall / Saturn Astra. It will be GM Holden's first locally produced car beyond the Commodore (sold in the States as the Pontiac G8) since the demise of the Vectra production in 1998.

Local design and engineering work on the Australian vehicle will take place at GM Holden's Port Melbourne headquarters in the State of Victoria. The front-wheel drive model will be offered with an array of 4-cylinder direct injected petrol and diesel engines while Holden said that it is also considering a range of alternative fuel or fuel saving technologies including E85, LPG, CNG and start-stop hybrid capability.

Further details about the compact model including its nameplate, design specifications and pricing will be revealed at a later date.

Production of Holden's second carline at the firm's Elizabeth manufacturing facility in South Australia will start in the third quarter of 2010 with support from the Federal and South Australian Governments. According to GM's Australian subsidiary, the program will require 500 to 600 existing employees at Elizabeth and is estimated to provide 500 to 600 local supplier positions.

2010 Holden Compact Model GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Reuss said the announcement provided opportunity to take a leading role in developing alternative fuel and fuel saving technologies in Australia for Australians. Mr Reuss said the program would be a major contributor to the economy, generating an estimated $70 million to $80 million in wages and $30 million in research and development.

"Together with Government, we are extending the scope and consumer appeal of our local manufacturing efforts," Mr Reuss said. "We have been building Holden cars to suit the needs of Australian motorists for 60 years. These plans build on that tradition. We recognise the needs and desires of motorists are evolving with growing concern around environmental factors and shifting consumer sentiment."

"Just as our leading Commodore range will continue to undergo technological development, this new vehicle will cater for growing demand for smaller cars focussed on economy," Mr Reuss added.

Audi Expands A4 2.0T's U.S. Line-Up with FWD and Six-Speed Manual Quattro Models

Two new models, one featuring front-wheel drive and the other a six-speed manual transmission, are joining Audi's 2009 A4 lineup in the U.S. The front-wheel drive A4 2.0T FrontTrak combines the 211HP 2.0 TFSI 4-cylinder engine with a multitronic continuously variable transmission, or CVT for short, for an EPA rating of 23 mpg in city driving conditions and 30 mpg in highway driving. For the first time, Audi is offering a six-speed manual gearbox on the new 2009 A4 2.0T quattro. With this configuration, the A4 achieves EPA fuel economy ratings of 22 mpg in city driving and 30 mpg on highways.

The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price on the front-wheel drive 2009 Audi A4 2.0T FrontTrak sedan with multitronic CVT transmission starts at $31,000 while the A4 2.0T quattro manual at $31,850. The first A4 2.0T FrontTrak CVT model will begin arriving at dealers this month, with the A4 2.0T quattro manual models expected to hit in dealerships by early 2009.

Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss: New Photo Gallery and Officially Official Details

The Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss is the crown glory of the soon-to-be discontinued, SLR McLaren super sports car. Named after the British motor racing legend and Mille Miglia record-holder Stirling Moss, who drove the legendary SLR racing cars during the 1950s, the speedster version of the SLR comes with neither a roof nor a windscreen. Not that anyone will leave the car exposed to the elements of nature, but the vehicle can be closed by two tonneau covers which are carried in the boot.

Power is provided by the same supercharged V8 engine as the standard SLR with an output of 650HP. Accelerating from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 3.5 seconds and with a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph), the SLR Stirling Moss is the fastest series-production car drop-top in the world.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the common denominator uniting the Stirling Moss with the other members of the SLR family is the aerodynamic concept with a closed underbody and a diffuser in the rear bumper for maximum possible downforce at the rear axle.

The German firm's engineers have also retained the SLR's airbrake which is raised during powerful braking at speeds above 120 km/h (75 mph), so as to stabilize the vehicle even more in such situations.

The SLR Stirling Moss' exterior styling is reminiscent of the SLR racing cars from the 1950s featuring a pronounced arrow-shaped form and is characterized by an elongated bonnet and a compact rear-end. The sportscar is also equipped with folding swing-wing doors which open forwards. Inside, Merc's designers tried to leave only the bare essentials using materials such as carbon fibre, aluminum and leather.

Production of the exclusive SLR Stirling Moss will be limited to 75 units with pricing set at €750,000 -around $1,070,000. However, only customers who have previously bought an SLR will be able to order the Stirling Moss. Following the cease of production of the SLR models in May 2009, Mercedes will begin manufacturing the SLR Stirling Moss in June 2009.
