Rome and Juliet and...VALENTINO: Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2016

The Dish: Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2016 collection was inspired by Shakespeare and in particular, the English poet/playwright/actor's Italian Renaissance-themed plays like Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, etc. Very appropriate being that it is--after all--the 400th  anniversary of his death. Besides this important tidbit, there was one more: One of the Valentino Creative Directors--Maria Grazia Chiuri announced--immediately following this Valentino Haute Couture show--that she was hired as the new Creative Director for the famed House of Christian Dior.

Maria Grazia Chiuri (bottom photo, top right) will be the new Creative Director at Christian Dior--she is the first woman to hold that title in the fashion house's 69-year history

Trends: Elizabethan looks; ruffled necklines; monastic dresses; capelets; slim pants; flared skirts;

Colors: Black, white, red, gold, olive. silver

WHO WORE WHAT?.....88th Annual Academy Awards: Olivia Wilde in Valentino Haute Couture

Olivia Wilde in Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2016

Olivia Wilde wore a Valentino Haute Couture Creme Pleated Gown with plunging neckline to tonight's 88th Annual Academy Awards. Shades of white have turned out to be a huge trend on the Red Carpet tonight. Personally, with all the controversy, I find it to be quite ironic that so many actresses chose the color...or lack there of!

I'm not sure if I like this gown on Olivia. The proportions, like Brie Larson, seem off to me. While it works on the long torso of the runway model, on Olivia, it make her look short waisted. I do like the back of the dress, it is interesting and ethereal.

I am also not a huge fan of the choker necklace. I would have loved to have seen a necklace version similar to the the harness the model is wearing. Or a beautiful drop pendant diamond necklace like Charlize Theron. Now that would have made a statement!

Monastic COUTURE, Cape Heaven, Flower Brocade and Valentino Red...

Viva Red: Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2012

Intense, sensual, regal...buzzwords for the "new" Valentino courtesy of its designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. Ever since they were placed at the helm of the iconic Fashion House, they have tried to take its DNA of UBER feminine, flowery, ruffle-filled clothes for a Roman Lady (or her daughter) who Lunches on Caprese salad and limoncello (and worn by style icons such as Jackie O and Elizabeth Taylor) to a more educated romantic, slightly Gothic Girl. In the last few seasons, one can see where these two designers want to take the House of Valentino and make it relevant for the 21st Century but still be respectful to signor Valentino Garavani.

For their recent Fall 2012 Valentino Haute Couture collection, they continued this spirit showing beautiful, delicate clothes, with an almost "Game of Thrones" touch to them. Monastic Capes (the Couture item of the season) were abundant and dresses with curved solid patterns highlighted by delicate chiffon:
