Mama Marija's Cafe @ Prahran Market

Saturday 18th March

On this particular Saturday we're heading over to market and lunch. Enjoy it while I still can, because we've got more dental surgery coming up followed by a month on the liquid diet.

There is no sincerer love than the love of food - Mama Marija

On the counter were pastries, oh how I wish Agatha was here!
Where does one find a good croissant?

Mama Marija's Cafe is an all day breakfast and lunch spot at prahran market, to the right at the cross lights but also between the cheap cheese place and newsagent.

Plenty of seats we opted to sit outside due to the lack of air conditioning inside.

Breakfast or lunch? Oh gosh idk... my heart was set on the smoked salmon but I can't eat bread (not unless it's soft and not at all crunchy anyway). So we had meat cigars instead. Also I know what smoked salmon is like, and love trying new things (not Anchovies though). I asked what was most popular, typical brunch said the friendly guy at the counter, though this, he recommended was his favourite item on the menu.

I've never been a fan of dessert for breakfast, even though I'm a sugar addict. Yes we'll have that fairy floss brioche one day, but not anytime soon.

Mama's Cevapi Cigars $18

8 homemade beef cevapi (seasoned beef premium cigars) severed with grilled eggplant and paprika relish, with warm flatbread and greek salad. Yes you can add chips for $8, we decided not to push it (had a molar removed recently).

Woah this dish is a platter!! With protein, carbs and a salad this meal ticks all my boxes. In hind sight I believe this dish is for two, order this and another to share.

Beef cigars,  moist juicy well seasoned and not too salty but just right. They're perfect!
Soft flatbread, less flat than expected. Greek salad - red onion, feta, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, purple k olives (pip-less) with a balsamic dressing. Lettuce. Plenty of things other than lettuce! Good mix, not everyone does this.

I've love that meat cigar in a sausage sizzle! As in the meat hall there's plenty of sausages on the bbq! You can buy sausage sizzles here!! Not at 3-4pm though, more around lunch time. One day we shall return!

The platter was huge and delicious! We're completely stuffed! A tip when shopping is never go shopping empty/peckish as you're more likely to purchase processed foods and junk food. Today I can say we've ticked that box!

I'm so glad I went for something new rather than the favorites.

Service was very friendly. We can't wait to return to try some other dishes.

A hidden gem, I'm surprised that they aren't more popular given the location and all.

Maker & Monger @ Prahran Market

Saturday 21st May

We first came upon Maker & Monger perhaps a few years ago, two at least, as Melbourne's Best Grilled Toastie! Its been on the list since, but today we're hitting those food goals!

Located within the market, Maker & Monger is only open when the market is, daylight really so as vampires you can see why it took us a while to return.

How do we pick just one, when they also sound amazing?!

Today they were three options, pre-made ready to grill in the sandwich press.

Pictures from our very first visit, on a market your with a tasting.

You could buy cheese to take home!

Mork Iced Chocolate 70% - $5. The perfect combo is sweet and darkness, cool and refreshing! For it was summer, our first visit and sip. Jas absolutely loved it and declared it the best iced chocolate he's had without ice cream!

I picked the fondue with melted gruyere, coate, shallots, wine and garlic. Yes it does look rather plain, but isn't really. Buttered toast, with melted cheese, crunchy and soft, not too salty. It was perfect! What if we had a cheese toastie bar or at least fondue station at the wedding?

Gin had the pimento toastie, with cheddar, x, onions, parsley, y, z and gruyere. Looks more interesting as you could see the flavours i this one. There was more than just cheese, and it was stronger than my fondue. But we love them both!

At $10-11 each these aren't a cheap snack, rather more of an occasional treat, though well worth the price!

Service on this afternoon was aloof.

A stall with soups, especially tomato soup would turn this snack into the perfect winter meal!

Where do you go for your toastie needs?

End of the Day Deals @ Prahran Market

Saturday 18th March

Conveniently we're in time for end of day deals! As we forget this was happening  (in between shows and dental hell) and so we didn't bring bags or a granny market trolley. But you'll need those, also a husband to help hold stuff while dive in. Bring cash, small notes.

When is the time right? I really don't know. I bought something then on the second round  (I did a round of the place) it was on further sale. *sigh* 3 for $5 then 4 for $5 on strawberries, and that's when it got crazy. Round two saw $5 boxes, of, stuff. Oh gawd idk what these green things are let alone know what to cook! Helen's an expert at this with the husband in tow. Though he's a good cook too. Near the left end was a 3 for $5 deal, normally 2 for $5. The back left door.

To participate in the end of day deals you need to know how much everything is worth at the moment. This week strawberries at Safeway are $2.50 a punnet. Figs are $4 a box at aldi (last wk) but not as good/ripe and not market fresh (I also had a reaction to the pesticide).

For $20 this is what I bought:

I'm actually after boxes of fruit though there were none, this box isn't for me.

Figs 2 for $6
Strawberries 3 for $5
Permissions 3 for $2 (not found at the supermarket, these were the soft ones)
Bananas bag for $2 (good deal for lady fingers)
Total $15

Most of the figs were good, go for the purple ones. We had two duds, one in each box that was not edible, works out to be $3 each, and there was one amazing one, others were B grade.

I noticed a lot of dull yellowy grey bananas $2 a kg. Will they taste the same?
The figs are huge though not the best ones  ($2.20 for one last time).

The $5 box had a lot of green things. Bok choy, leek, beet leaves, mung bean sprouts, potatoes, jalapeños/pepper (???) And the cherry on top - figs! This box is for bio guy. Looks like he'll be having soup and noodles. Turns out he hates figs, as he considers them fancy. Bio guy doesn't believe in fancy food.

I'm told on Sundays Pino does $10 all you can pack boxes, though have yet to encounter them.

Gotta find that meat tray deal that I've heard about though the market won't tell me which day it is... a secret I suppose. Does anyone know about that?

Saturday 22nd April

To market we went, probably not worth it unless you plan to buy lots or just happen to be in the area though. We sat back and observed the pros do it.

Bought 7 lady finger bananas for $2 and 3 boxes of figs (pretty good ones, a mix of B & C grade) for $5. We stalked them as they were 2 for $5 at first. There was lots of green stuff and mushrooms and apples sold by the bag for a few dollars.

Worth stopping by? Sure if you're in the area, though I'm not too keen about making a trip there, unless you wanted to stock up on veggies for the week or so. I'm more of a fun market trip person rather than shopping for a couple or family and buying all the fresh stuff at the market. Goals for one day.

Summer in Paris with Street Fashion Sydney

Have you ever wondered what real people wear in the French Fashion Capitol of the world? Yes, me too. Fingers crossed that a simple bonjoure & a merci will be enough to bring you the real style shots from the streets of Paris to let us know. So hold on, here we go; shot one from the first day of a Parisienne Summer.
Street style. A couple at the Place du Trocadéro with Tour Eiffel in background. The Burger Project @ Chadstone

Tues 16th May

The Burger Project at Chadstone is on the top level, top top food area, an area with restaurants with an open and inviting front. We've been to the BP in the city so were happy to try this location, with the expectation of the same quality.

This place is huge! Much larger than the city branch.

Order, grab a buzzer, a table then pick up when ready. On a Tuesday night at 6pm it wasn't busy just yet, though when we were leaving that's when the crowds arrived.

So many seats! With all around bright lighting it was less spotlighty than Collins Lane.

We had the American Cheese, which was too salty! I'd go with the classic next time.

Extra crispy fries, were perfect! Salt & Pepper.

Student Offer - Between 3pm and 6pm you can get almost any burger (except the double) and fries or a drink for $10! Burgers start from $10 so it's a pretty good deal.

Would I normally pay $10 for a burger? No, I'm not much of a burger person.

Service was friendly and prompt, though there was a card charge! Bring cash.

SOLDIERS IN THE STREETS

I LOVE that military pieces pop up each and every season, it's classic and adaptable. Whether for fashion or for function, camouflague is forever! Get on board with this awesome print with camo ties and chinos, blazers, and even shoes. There has never been more ways to rock one of my favorite prints and unleash your inner soldier.

STREET STYLE MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA

Look for individual pieces that scream you are the type of person with a distinct sense of personal style who simply doesn't care enough about trends. Finding these pieces will se you apart from the crowd, and for good reason.

NEW MAN ON THE BLOCK, GRANT FELLOWES

Clashing the print with other styles is what keeps this print alive with its playful colours. Use the print to contrast against blazers, fitted shirts and conservative wear. A pair of camo trousers or shorts paired with a classic tailored blazer can create a strong statement

BEST DRESSED MEN

Don't be afraid to wear the print with bold colours in Summer to brighten the streets. The one key rule is not to look like you about to go hunting in your camo. Think complimentary colours to the print, such as orange.

STYLE ICON GFASHCOLLECTIVE

Choose smart pieces that you can adapt and mix and match. One of my favourites is the Roberto Cavalli bag. Highly adaptable. Try refreshing your wardrobe with one or two key accessories. Start with a statement bag or a small handkerchief scarf.

Avoid dressing head to toe in the print. Unless you are ina beautifully tailored suit. I remind you, you want to look stylish, not like you are going deer hunting.
