Weekend Libations - Leaf Vodka Highlight & The Classic Concord

Vodka kind of has a reputation. It's not bad, but it's not good either. It's known to burn you a bit, but man does vodka have a good time. It's strong enough to be distinctive, but it is also really great at blending in. It's the perfect base for mixed drinks and always has a kick to it. It can be hard to come across a really good vodka, but that's where LEAF comes into the picture.

LEAF is brand that is all about bringing something different to the table of the distillery industry. They hold this firm belief that there is something in the water vodka is made with that helps to shape the taste, the character and finish of the spirit. Their two offerings - Rocky Mountain Mineral water based vodka and Alaskan Glacial water based vodka each have a distinctive and individual taste. LEAF vodkas are created with the great tasting waters from amazing sources that help to create their unique flavor qualities. The Alaskan Glacial water vodka has a hint of sweetness that made it extremely palatable and the Rocky Mountain Mineral water vodka had a warm, savory and silky taste to it.

The Alaskan Glacial water vodka was the perfect base to a sweet fall cocktail. Although it is fall and the first fruit that comes to mind is apple, we thought we would switch it up for this weekend libations recipe and used concord grapes as our fruit of choice. The grapes and vodka blended nicely to create a sweet cocktail that felt more like a blended drink. This was a twist on the traditional gimlet as we chose to blend the fruit in rather than just add the grape syrup. It created a refreshing drink.

INGREDIENTS

Grape Puree - 1 pound concord grapes & 1/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
For the Cocktail - 2 ounces LEAF vodka, 1 1/4 ounce grape puree
3/4 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice, 1/4 ounce simple syrup, 2 lime wedges, 4 grapes

MAKING YOUR DRINK

Pull apart grapes from their stems. Set aside 4 whole grapes. Put the rest of your grapes in a blender with 1/4 ounce lime juice (to prevent browning).  You will want to blend and completely purée the grapes. Strain the purée through a fine-mesh strainer, pushing it through with the back of a ladle OR you can add ice to your blender and create more of an iced blended drinks and keep the fruit puree to add a full bodied flavor as we did.

If you strained your puree rather than adding ice directly to your blender, fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add LEAF vodka, grape puree, lime juice, simple syrup, lime wedges, and whole grapes. Shake vigorously and pour contents of shaker into an old-fashioned glass without straining.

Enjoy and drink responsibly! We hope you enjoyed this weekend's edition of: Weekend Libations - check back soon for another recipe!

At Home Fine Dining on a Budget and Some Cheese Education

As the weather gets cooler, the idea of staying indoors becomes more and more appealing to me. It's actually quite simple to bring the elegance of eating out into your home. A quick, fairly inexpensive and simple way to do this is by having a wine and cheese spread at home. Maximize your budget by shopping for trendier boxed wines, budget chardonnays and Rosés at your local grocer.

Add hard salamis, fruits and breads to  your spread for a hearty and quick meal. I'll be the first to admit, I love cheese and try to experiment with different kinds when I can. Cheese making is a really interesting art! Check out the youtube video below!

Check out Wholefoods for the gamut of artisanal cheeses. Cheeses of Europe sent out some great samples for us to try. These are high quality French Cheeses you can find at your local Whole Foods. We tried out the Camembert Au Calvados which has a unique taste as there is apple brandy mixed in with the curd. The Camembert was soft and creamy and has a bit of stronger smell and taste. This was a good cheese paired with fruit like apples. We also tried out a Comte cheese which is considered the king of French Cheeses and is made from unpasteurized cows milk. It has a semi hard texture, the rind was a dusty brown color and the inside was a pale creamy yellow. Of the 3 types tried, this was my favorite. I liked pairing this cheese with a hard salami and grapes on the side. The final cheese we tried was a Brie. The Brie is similar in terms of texture as it is a soft cheese. Brie is cut from a bigger round, so the sides are usually not covered by a rind, which is a good way to tell the difference between it and a Camembert. Brie doesn't have as pungent an aroma as the Camembert and is not as sour or chalky.

A great way to put together a spread at home is to try and include a variety of textures and flavors. Most cheese belongs to one of four basic categories: aged, soft, firm or blue. Offer up a selection of breads like sliced baguettes, bread sticks or crackers and add things like sweet preserves, spicy mustards and the like to add to the variety. Also, adding sweet and salty really adds to the overall spread. Include cured meats like salami, candied nuts and of course fruits like apples, pears, cherries and grapes. Super simple and quick! My kind of meal.

When you serve, you can add some style by setting out beautiful knives, organizing your cheeses on wood blocks or the table cloth and labeling your cheese. You can check out Cheeses of Europe to find a local store near you that caries their products!

Back to work

September is all about starting something new and fresh.
It's a perfect time to refresh your wardrobe, pick a few essentials and refill the basics.
So let's start it together!
Choose a good and quality trench coat. If you are a high fashion player than Burberry will be the best one of course. And if you want a cheaper version, I would definitely go for those from Zara, they are becoming better and better every season.
Our next important piece is leather pencil skirt! You can wear it at work, at cocktail parties, well you can wear it all day long for every occasion. Wool/cashmere sweaters or crisp white shirts for work, simple white t-shirt for casual days. You can even wear it with sneakers and college jackets, so leather skirt is a wardrobe must!
Fall shoes update is also crucial. I would say that lace up sandals are still a major thing, belted trench/coat and bare legs, who doesn't like that!? Beside these one, brogues, loafers, slip-ons, oxfords you can't go wrong with flats.
And when it comes to accessories, we are making transition into less is more mood. Pick one or two jewelry pieces and let them become your style signatures.

Here are my picks:
1. Trench coat, Zara
2. Wool sweater, Zara
3.Semi precious stone ring, INES atelier
4. Bronzing powder, Guerlain
5. Leather skirt, Mango
6. Croc city bag with chains, Zara
7. Leather sandals, Zara
8. Sunglasses, Massimo Dutti

Don't let the new collections overwhelmed you, stick to the basics and it will be easy!

Rising with the Sun

I am not usually the type of person to try and coerce someone into doing something, but this time dear readers, I am going to make an exception. Last week I once again found myself restless. Pacing a track in my carpet, I decided at 3am to take off with my gear with one determination, to catch that sunrise.

I had done this once before, except in 22 degree weather behind the Adler Planetarium, buried in 2 feet of snow sitting with my tripod. I do recall that the odd thing was during the entire time I was taking photos, I felt not the least bit of chill. It was such and infiltration of emotions that I felt nothing but sheer inner-warmth. I have spoken about the experience many times since then but speaking is so much easier than writing (for me at least). I thought to myself… “How does one convey such intense beauty with words?”I quickly found out that you simply cannot. You must go and experience itfor yourself.

Last week was the first time I had done this during the summer. And what was truly magnificent to me was not only observing the break of day, that moment when the sun just starts to peek its unrestricted rays out from the clouds, but the fact that just as the sun rose, the city rose with it. There were two simultaneously amazing things happening at once. Some early morning joggers would sit and have a chat with me. I quietly wondered to myself if they realized how lucky they were to be able to witness this every single day. People were so kind. I saw a pleasantness I had not seen in a very long time.

Our journey on this rock is so very short in comparison to eternity. I will never take another second of my day, my life, for granted. This experience spun me around like an amusement park ride. It instilled a permanent awakening inside of me.

Again, my life is forever changed. Go and watch the day unfold. I promise you, it is worth every single second.

Peace and Love to you all <3

Halfstack Fall Issue Sneak Peek: Off to Grammy Camp

Written by: Cora Vasseur as featured in Halfstack's Fall Issue.

Chicago is rich in music history and prowess across the genres. It was no surprise when several Chicagoland high school students were selected for the GRAMMY Foundation’s prestigious GRAMMY Camp. In their 10th year of existence, there will be 173 high school students total from across the country and the globe. Some students will be flying in from Japan, China, and England to learn what it takes to make it in today’s music industry.

The GRAMMY Foundation was established in 1988 to foster the betterment of American recorded music through programs and events that involve music industry professionals with different communities.

“We always wanted to have another vehicle for those high school students who wanted more in-depth information and instruction about the various careers in the business of music,” says David R. Sears, Executive Education Director. “It’s day long music industry career day.”

"The GRAMMY Foundation's GRAMMY Camp has become our signature program that provides young people with an extraordinarily in-depth experience, giving them a genuine sense of what it's like to have a career in the music industry," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation. "Each and every GRAMMY Camper benefits from this program and takes with them valuable lessons learned as they continue their music journeys."

Candidates apply online for one or more of the eight career tracks, which include instrumental performance, vocal performance, audio engineering, music journalism, music business, video production and motion graphics, songwriting and electronic music production. Campers are selected on many factors, but especially two key elements.
