What's In My Hand Luggage | Survival Kit For Long Haul Travel

Hey guys! Happy new week! I'm dedicating this one to all of our news from NYC! We've finally caught up on sleep/work backlog, and I am SO excited to share our highlights and travelling tips from our time away. (OK, I have some fun things for back home too!)

As any one who travels with budget and short haul airlines will know, it’s often easier and cheaper to fly short distances with hand luggage only. In recent years, as I've mostly been travelling in Europe, I’ve become pretty adept at packing my life into a small wheely suit case. It's practical, but I miss having the luxury of packing things I actually want for a flight. When it came to packing for New York, with the joy of both hand and hold luggage, I couldn't wait to assemble my perfect long haul carryall.

Here are the items which kept me snug, happy, and organised for our NY flight . . .
Scarf: Becksondergaard Pre SS15. Love This & This | Leopard Print Pouch: Becksondergaard Pre SS15 Love. Love This Chic Option. | Patterned Note Book: Paperchase | Long Necklace With Stone: Feather & Stone | Lip Balm: Burts Bees | Face Spray: Pai Lotus Flower & Orange Blossom BioAffinity Skin Tonic (sold as part of travel set) | Face Moisturiser: Elemis Hydra-day Cream | Hand Moisturiser: La Roche-Posay Hand Repair Cream | Tablet: Apple iPad Mini | Socks: Pantherella c/o

Travel scarf: I recently professed my love for the travel scarf in my weekly blog for Hello! Fashion (by the by - have you checked it out yet? I don’t think I even told you guys I was doing that!).  Natural fibres are always the best as they keep you warmest. I took my new Becksondergaard scarf to New York,  it's pre SS15 but this gorgeous cashmere scarf would be perfect too.
Precious jewellery: I keep all of the things I would hate to lose/ couldn’t replace, close to me in my hand luggage, jewellery included. I use small jewellery pouches, or even a purse to keep the items I want to wear on holiday safe.

Socks: I want to feel as comfortable as possible on a long haul flight, and so I love to slip my shoes off and pop a pair of cosy socks on. Pantherella has a great choice, and I love the simple grey pair I got recently. I am also a huge fan of Roos Beach Shop, a super sweet Cornwall-based boutique I am yet to visit in person, but which has a great selection of gift-able items online. I just added these fun patterned socks to my sock drawer!

Moisturiser - in every guise!: After previous flights, I’ve found myself suffering  breakout. This is the last thing you want when arriving at a fabulous holiday location, or returning back to work. I made it my mission on this trip to be fastidious about moisturising and staying hydrated. I accepted a glass of water every time the cabin crew came round with drinks and avoided the salty plane food. The beauty products I took with me were:
- Burts Bees classic lip balm. I use this every. single. day.
- Elemis hydra-balance day cream. LOVE! I have been using the cleansing balm too.
La Roche-Posay Hand Repair Cream. this was a gift, and I have never used a better hand cream! Sometimes I use a little of the excess to smooth through the end of my hair too to minimise frizz.
- Pai Lotus Flower and Orange Blossom Skin Affinity Tonic: a refreshing spritz of this perked my skin up when it was feeling particularly lack-lustre on the flight.
Pouches for stuff: I love a great pouch. On any given day I’ll have two or three in my handbag. Pouches rock my world! To clarify, in my mind, a pouch is either a small clutch bag, wallet or even pencil case, which I use to store things in my bag for easy visibility. No handbag rummaging for me! When travelling I use a clutch for passports and boarding passes, a separate one for all travel itineraries and information. And one for my iPad. I also have a separate one in my small personal handbag for receipts, and sometimes an extra one for cards and change. Yeah, I love these things!

iPad: I love the feel of a physical book, but I find that downloading titles on to my kindle app is much more space-efficient. Before we left for NY, I took the advice of Lindsay & Bjork from A Pinch Of Yum and downloaded a load of business-related books they recommended. To my shame I actually got lost in more of my non-fiction titles, but still, I like to know they’re there when I do want to get stuck in to a business boost. I also use my iPad for browsing the internet when away as I didn’t take my laptop with me to NY.
Notebook: this thing comes with me everywhere. Despite working in the digital sphere, I find that I make my best notes and musing by hand. I religiously write to-do lists, and jot down thoughts as and when. This notebook was great as I actually dedicated a page to every day we were in NY, and we could scribble in things we wanted to do. As sometimes phone signal, and data allowance, can be tricky when abroad, it helped to have a physical record of everything. I also wrote down directions to places we were going in case we couldn’t look them up on our phones.
The bag: OK so this is a biggie, which bag to use for your hand luggage?! This Karen Millen bag has been a daily saviour in my life of late! I use it to carry my laptop - SO hard to find an attractive, comfortable go-with-everything bag for this - and it was a great size for hand luggage. I like that it’s big but not bulky, and that it has both a long and short strap which gives you an option for how to hold you bag.
What’s not shown: I took Sarah Yate’s advice and bought my own tea bags for the journey too. This helped to stifle the boredom of plane drinks, and keep us hydrated on the flight. And naturally I bought a hundred magazines for entertainment.

What’s on your hand luggage must-have list? Do you have any tips and tricks for feeling healthy after a long-haul flight?

I am so excited to share all of our travelling news this week! If there is anything you would like me to specifically cover, leave me a comment below or drop me a line on monica@theelginavenue.com

Have an awesome start to your weeks all!

Christmas Fare | Tredwell's London

Ciao bellissimas! Happy Friday!

I am particularly looking forward to this weekend as this week has totally been one of those. I've really struggled to shake a bout of post-holiday fogginess, and I can't wait to get away this weekend (we're going to the beach!) and regroup.

Despite the foggy brain, this week has been peppered with lovely events. Yesterday my blogging agency WaR Network laid on a feast for our WaR family at Tredwell's restaurant on Upper St Martin's Lane. Given that as bloggers we generally work alone, it was so nice to have a proper Christmas party! We were treated to the most delicious food, and I got to catch up with some of my favourite blogging friends.
Opened earlier this year, Tredwell's is the third London restaurant of Michelin starred chef Marcus Wareing. Marcus so kindly took the time to talk to us all at the lunch yesterday, and him and I got in to conversation about the striking custom made clock the restaurant boasts. Marcus explained that he had wanted to design a wall with knives lodged in and the handles showing, but that for health and safety reasons (naturally) his design team had advised that they create a piece of artwork using knives instead. The result is brilliant - a photo opportunity favourite amongst the lunch's attendees yesterday!
For those of you that love a menu snoop, here's what we ate:

Down the apples & pears (delicious vodka infused cocktails)

Harissa-glazed aubergine, peanuts, coriander, chilli
Chricken liver mousse, bacon jam, toast
Pulled  pork belly, ginger & apple slider

Sea bass, carrot, lentils, crispy shallots
Lamb chops, minted bean chutney,
Gnocchi, cauliflower, sprouts, hazelnuts & Berkswell cheese
Sweet potato chips, BBQ mayo
Kale slaw

Salted caramel ice cream
Warm ginger cake, caramel, cream

Such was the lovely leisurely pace of our lunch, I had to dash before dessert to a meeting. Boo! And yes my heart broke to have missed the salted caramel ice cream.
If you too are in an industry where you largely work alone, I highly suggest getting together with people in the same field and instigating a Christmas party! Not only is it lovely to celebrate the season, but it is a great way to network, and get to know new friends.

Tredwell's is definitely being added to my list of preferred central London eateries. The location of Tredwell's is great, food and drinks are yum, and despite yesterday being catered for, I've done the research, and the pricing is good too!

Do you have your Christmas party coming up? Are you looking forward to it?!

Have an awesome weekend guys!

P.S. I am in this week's LOOK magazine in a special shoot with New Look! You can pick up a copy until Monday - it's one of my favourite shoots to date!

Blue Accents | NYC

Leather Jacket (Worn Underneath): Karen Millen | Sleeveless Coat: Karen Millen | Scarf: Becksondergaard c/o | Jeans: Frame c/o + Similar | Trainers: Nike + Similar | Bag: Russell & Bromley Old + Similar | Hat: Similar + Similar

With all the short-haul flights I've taken this year - and the prerequisite accompanying hand luggage only - I’ve become pretty savvy at packing light. Perhaps you'll understand my excitement then at the prospect of a long-haul flight with hold luggage for NYC! Packing heavy?! Bring. It. On.

Before Ols and I left for New York, I hunted around for NY-appropriate items. I wanted to look polished, and felt that if any city was deserved of dressing up, it's New York. One store in particular came up trumps: Karen Millen. Seriously, A/W perfection! If you haven’t visited Karen Millen recently, get yourself in to a store, or online, pronto. Karen Millen have been repositioning themselves for the past few years, and I feel they’ve come full circle. They are rocking it.

Some of my favourite Karen Millen pieces right now include the much coveted sleeveless coat, this sassy disco blazer and this snake print dress, all of which came with me to NY. Each of these pieces are easy mix n’ match items, and come in colours which are both fun and Winter friendly. Disclaimer: this is not a sponsored post, I’m just genuinely head over heels for Karen Millen right now! Total #BrandCrush.

If you should find yourself in London soon, you MUST visit the Karen Millen Brompton St store. The recently revamped space is one of my favourite destination stores in London. The interiors are beautiful, and totally remind me of what a shopping experience should be - luxe but not alienating. The Brompton St store also hosts a fabulous Karen Millen Atelier where you can have certain Karen Millen items custom made, or customised. I was lucky enough to become the proud owner of one of the Brompton clutch bags which was custom dyed in an evergreen hue for me. Unfortunately the clutch service is no longer available however there are new customisable items per season, and I can whole heartedly attest to the Atelier’s quality.

OK so Karen Millen fan-girling aside. I wore this grey and blue look on our penultimate date in New York. Oli and I walked from Soho, across the Williamsburg bridge, and on into Brooklyn. The day was perfectly sunny and the wind was cuttingly cold. I honestly felt SO invigorated by our entire time in NYC, I was just grinning like a madwoman most of the time. Given that it was so freezing on our visit, and we were walking every where, I ended up wearing my Nike trainers, and the sleeveless gray Karen Millen jacket most days.

Yes, despite the large hold luggage allowance.

Now that we are back home, I am having a blast checking out all of our photos, and planning our next NY visit - we can’t wait to go back!

I’ve still got so much to share with you, but for now, I'm headed to a couple of early Christmas store events - back in London!

Have an awesome day all!

In Frankfurt with Opel

all photos are made with my phone camera

If you are a true Instagram addict and by any chance following me over there, then you already know that I spent few days in Frankfurt am Main with Jelena in the middle of October.
Thanks to Opel, we attended the New Corsa launch and we had the opportunity to test it and drive it around this city of contrasts.
After we arrived at the airport, we had breakfast at cozy bistro and soon after that, we picked color of our car and started the journey. I'm crazy about the old school maps and already have a small collection of them, but I have to admit that equipment which includes the IntelliLink system with 7inch  touchscreen and apps such as BringGo, Stitcher and TuneIn is better than anything I have ever tried!
Our next stop was at the gorgeous mansion Neues Schloss Höchst where we had the official presentation and lunch and before we arrived at the Jumeriah hotel (with the incredible skyline view), we made one more pit stop at the place called Lodge, which is basically a restaurant above the Zoo, how cool is that?! After a power nap in the afternoon (or crazy running through the city like I had), we made it to the Kameha suite which was reserved for cocktails and dinner. We finished our test drive the day after and when we started to explore the city in a good old way, on foot. ;)
As a girl who doesn't know much about the engines, cylinders and other big words, what can I say about this car? Well, it's cute! :) It's comfortable and stylish, it's new and glossy. It's elegant and modern. Above all, it's safe car which is the most important thing.
Thank you Opel for spoiling us!

NYC | See You Soon

Hello there you gorgeous lot! As I type Ols and I are in the final stages of packing for NYC!

We have been so lucky with recommendations from friends and readers so far, but if you have ANY further tips - we are all ears!

Whilst away I'll be putting a pause on posts; taking some time to rest, and recharge. I am crazy excited to spend time with Ols, and visit some of our NYC pals.

Keep up to date with our adventures on Instagram and Twitter; and I shall see you back here on the 12th!
