Goodbye August. Hello MSFW.

Monday 28th August

A quick lunch from that French place. A chicken lettuce and tomato baguette. Crunchy but not too Crunchy on the outside fluffy within. The filling was basic with no buttery spread or anything. Way too basic for $8. It was medium-ish sized. The way it was filled wasn't great with all the chicken on the side like it was just for show in a shop window... Not practical. Not spread out like subway. Wouldn't get this again. We prefer nhu lan.

Toroto at Nova. Cinema no.12. The screen is small for the movies, the smallest we've seen out of all the ones we've been to: the two mainstream ones, Como and lido (once). It's about the small size as our projector screen back home... But better quality id hope.
Slightly slanted but not enough if you're behind a girraft, row H is the one to pick it's higher, towards the back.

I still think toroto is a pedo! His grin is unnerving. I do love the music though. That's the best part. Le beau loved it as he saw it as a kid. I think as a kid it would be more magical. Before learning all these restrictions like you gotta keep your shoes on cause hook worm and potential infection... Also stranger danger and all.

Set in the country I can't quite tell when it's set but it would have been before the 40s? But one girl has a 50s dress. The speed of technology in the country is different also.
There's power lines, telegrams + 1920s two piece phone, water pump.

Someone said it just over a decade after the end of the Second World War - so the 50s! The dress was right! Miyazaki set the time as "when televisions were yet to be brought into homes". 1958 is the exact year, it's on calendar in aa scene.

I'm still coonfused why they moved to the country... is it because they're poor? Potentially it was to be close to their mother but she's still 3hrs away and they don't have a car.

The Cat Returns - Everyone knows when you go into another world if you eat the food you're normally trapped and yet the cat ate all the food anyway...

A girl saves a cat and could have died! She travels to two different cat worlds. We loved the typical secretary role with the brown cat that colouring that made it look like a Chinese girl. American voices though. The crazy king looks crazy XD

While the Prince has a minimal part and only two scenes we like him! He likes the pretty blue eyed white cat with the pink bow. She came from the real world before the movie started. Oddly the king accepts it and then wants main girl for himself... When he first comes to town it was hilarious how the security cars fought of the house cats.

The main girl doesn't really learn anything about her adventure when she gets back to the real world. 90s suburban. One of the only ghibli films that doesn't feel like a match for the others in terms of style. It was less je ne quoi? We quite liked it though but the ending I was hoping for something more... Maybe she meets a guy who reminds her of Baron?

MealPal Launch

Wednesday

Lunch with Mason Dixon via MealPal

Off to Lilydale for a dress fitting. Somehow my styling tends to lean on the Japanese school girl style x novice nun. XD

It's a different world out there. So much space! But at the same time the people make the town feel like trailer trash. Pants now worn 3/4 down your ass why even bother?
Alesha was an absolute pleasure! Her room looks like something out of a magazine, absolutely no clutter, like a guest room. We tried a few different dresses before picking a light grey one from Rodeo Show that would compliment the millennial pink well.

Back to the city. We're literally an hour away! The house is 15mins from the city - if you travel in between the peaks.

Ali's Wedding. Arriving just in time for Ali to say the lie to save himself and the family /friends from the shame of not getting a high score. Similar to 'The Big Sick' but with more emphasis on cultural differences. Big sick guy is older and has a bit more escape chance not living at home and being independent. While Ali's just finished high school, lives at home and his dad is the priest at their church opposite the house with a beautiful Rapunzel tower. Up north in Coburg (?) is this place real? Ali plays the mandolin. The church is a community and almost like living in a small country town, while being in Melbourne.

Pretty good though not as hilarious as 'The Big Sick ' which is similar in that it deals with immigrants with middle eastern cultures (not the main guy but more of the family) liking a girl they don't accept. Though Ali takes it a step further, it all starts with a lie. Tractor chases, deportation and shaming at church are some of the hilarious scenes.
.
Definitely go see it

Thursday

Lunch in between meetings at Zen. The salmon terrayaki bento is perfect!
I still don't like the bean sprouts but that's just me.

Aqua S. Coconut grainy. Pandan was good. We found the coconut was inedible, a sorbet they said. Always in the right machine. Gross. Not the flavour just texture. It's rare when it's grainy but I guess it's just one of those flavours. $8.

Cookies Dough

I think we had dinner at Mr Burger, according to the notes...
Burger was huge! I need a slider
Peach vinegar not BBQ
Tomato sauce not free
Crinkle cut chips light samboy seasoning

Friday

Finally we made it to Sushi Monger! Open exclusively for weekday lunch they're hard to catch though easy to find in a laneway off Bourke St.

After lunch we attended a lovely workshop hosted by Kikki K with Fontin, the
Dream. Do. Enjoy. Share. Journal Workshop. We identified our dreams, goals, talents and strengths. Worked out what our perfect mornings look like and compared them to our average ones.

It wasn't one of those boring sessions though, it was quick, snappy and fun, in a group of 8 girls. 2hrs condensed in to an abridged version of 30mins. I'm a fast learner so it wasn't overwhelming at all.

It definitely gave me the motivation to start working on some of my goals again.
Though the idea that life is about sharing moments with others make me feel iffy. All the ladies at dance says it's untimately about friends and family. But for me it's all about me, and what I'm up to, as I have very little relationships with anyone.

It's another shopping festival! Post coming up soon.

Brunching with Lady MacBeth

Monday 14th August

Two consecutive warm sunny days, could it be spring already? Or is this just a preview? Some years the first week of September it's still winter. I much prefer spring for I love all those light flowing fabrics and lace. Home was always spring by the Bay. Cardigan weather most of the time. It's time to bring out the blazers!

Spring is launched by MSFW though it's now MFW. The first week of September we always look forward to. I fondly remember our very first year, oh wait maybe it was the second. 2014. Priceline showbags, the glasshouse at qv and hub.

QV used to do an end of winter popup at the square with different themes and hold events there. One year it was a Swedish forest (minimalist) another was a beach, the third a garden! We went to a beautiful bridal tea and wedding dress runway.

In 2015 we were invited to the AH runway! Front row seats, lunch time with bubbles we haven't had the same privilege since sadly. They've been going downhill and have moved to Perth.

Father's Office. The outdoor area used to be smoking has been divided into a smoking/drinks only area and the other area for non-smoking. What happpend to no smoking anywhere on the premisis?

Dinner snacks at Father's Office. Tacos beef And veg. Veg was bean based and hot! The pulled beef was good. The arancini bad. Battered almost rather than crumbled coating. A bland ball of yellow rice. The gooey cheese added a slight saltiness. The other cheese had the texture of paper, dry and just no.

Movie Night - Orlando (1992)

Ok so Orlando falls into a deep sleep, how didn't they just bury him with a bell?
- There is a widespread notion that 'saved by the bell' originated as an expression that relates to people being buried alive. The idea was that, if someone were comatose and mistakenly pronounced dead and interred, they could, if they later revived, ring a bell that was attached to the coffin and be saved.

So many eras and costumes! I don't understand the changes though... from 1600 to Modern Day, he becomes a she. The Turkish part was funny, sweating and dying under the wigs and winter costumes XD

Thursday

Thursday started with a meeting. An average hot chocolate along the way.
Meeting went over so we skipped the workshop and went to lunch.

Strolling we dropped by Zen without looking up reviews or much planing. Bring a student town there's many cheap eats. On this block alone there's Damso Korean and Zen that offers $10 lunch specials.

Castella Cake. It's a huge sponge cake.

Tiramisu at Basta. A Date Restaurant.

Dinner at Barolo

Friday

  • New therapist. What happened to the last one? He got a new job.
  • Chilling at the library. It's very different from the office. More background noise on the second floor vs 14th.
  • When you can't tell if the presenter is awesome/eccentric as or just nuts XD But he was entertaining.
  • Met people! Cool people that we didn't fight.

Dinner at Dondon no.10 now serving in black bowls rather than porcelain. Pretty good needs a sesame Kewpie dressing though for the salad. As always there's plenty of rice.

Saturday

Brunching at The Train Yard.

Lohengrin. Set in 10th century Germany with a palette of muted colours for the ladies, divided up into waiting ladies/level 1 nuns, nuns and the common folk. Not high on costume porn or set design. There was a stage, steps and a projected background. I love my elaborate sets!

Realism and fantasy collide on a background of impending battle in which Elsa of Brabant is wrongly accused of her brother’s murder. Sailing in on a swan (deftly staged with magical projections in a rain of mist), an enigmatic knight arrives to defend her honour, precipitating a marriage with the caveat that Elsa is never to question his identity.

Naturally she asks, being the weak easily influenced damsel, by Lady Macbeth. He leaves, she dies. Though it was Lady Macbeth that stole the show!

Unlike in Mb it is he who gets killed off, while she lives and was manipulating him from the very start. Unlike in Mb where it was at first teamwork.

Eat. Blog. Play.

Monday 31st July

A revisit to our first, and actually one and only sushi train I've been to. After Sushi Hub, Hotaru seems not as good nor fresh though I'm sure it's cheaper. S It's the sauces and freshness that makes Sushi Hub better - though I've only had their takeaway. Though they weren't around last time we visited Hotaru. Sushi Hub (is down atm 25/9 due to a water leakage that took out half the block) does a $30 all-you-can-eat in 90mins thing.

Tuesday

Hightail Bar Launches!

Thursday

A warehouse in Kensington set the scene of this mornings event, usually cold there were plenty of outdoor heaters though none of the oil drum honour variety fortunately.
Kids and home decor lifestyle trade show. We won the major prize by default? Though I'd be happy with a candle, lunch and coconuts. It was a breakfast meet and greet though we  underestimated how far it was on the other side of the city.

Lunch at Momo. Lunch goes till 4pm here! The latest I've seen anywhere. We ordered the Wonton Noodle Soup from the $15 lunch menu. Through liven it's $17...

Friday

Checking out a trade event. Workshops, lunch and snacks included!

The unicorn festival was hectic as expected with no lines just crowds. The girl before us bought the last handful of cookies I wanted!! The unicorn one. Also the stalls signs were pretty low so you had to battle the crowds to just find the right stand. Not great. We spent around $24 on four treats, one a regret.

I didn't like the cakey donuts (Dessert Parlour's I love) though Ray's cake pops had a cake pop-like filling cake with sprinkles and crispy pearls which were awesome! We really need to stop going to these crazy crowded novelty events...

Dinner at Barolo, excellent service from my favourite waitress. We had the beef and Shiraz ragu with mash. Warm and hearty I loved it! Just a touch salty but ok, melt in your mouth beef accompanied with mash, not the best one ever but still pretty good. I'd highly recommend this dish and would get it again.

Saturday

Treats from the Bakery!

Lunching at Punchbowl Canteen.

Sunday

Aladdin was just as we remembered with all the music and magic. Unfortunately some were lost thanks to the brat behind me who I had to glare at a few times. Next time we just need to tell on them. *work that assertiveness*

Dinner at Saint Urban was free of kids, thank God. The cheesy gnoochi was awesome! And very filling. With very friendly service. Note the step at the bathroom. Nearly died there.

Sleeping Beauty  - Dir. Ado Arrietta · France Spain (2016).

  • It was weird. Muted as if a filter had been caster upon the entire thing.
  • Edwardian-esque though leaning more towards cosplay fail. What's with the gong and Greek guard dressed like ancient Rome? That or he got the dress code wrong.
  • The castle was more like a manor and it felt like a budget film.
  • Silence, there was a lot of that. Other than footsteps and the snaps of the camera there was a silence during the exploration of the castle. So it's 2016, 100 years after the curse. There's a modern day prince (not the princely type, but just a 20-something year old boy who happens to be a prince) trying to find her. The challenges are easy, there are no dragons.
  • He kisses her, waking her and they're getting hitched. They dance, him topless and her in a modern dressing gown that's way too sexy for a 15yr old. They're about to do it. So we assume they fast forwarded over the wedding especially as we hear Tsiolkovsky famous waltz and there's a 20s radio. Why is there service in a forest? How does he have cell reception?
  • The main guy was a bore. And he has a friend but other than singing Amazing Grace to drums and being a shadow we know nothing about this guy.

Ingrid Goes West - It was amazing! A fantastic and hilarious comedy on our obsession with social media and the highlight reel of life. If you're on instagram you need to see this!!
