Fashion Week NYC..NORMAN AMBROSE

There are defining moments during each season’s fashion collections, but it is rare that this fashion cynic is this impressed so early in the game we call Fashion Week Fall 2011. Today I was privileged to witness a relatively unknown designer achieve what I can will say is greatness. The name to remember is Norman Ambrose and his eponymous collection IS what a collection should look like for the cur

rent reigning queens of “society” or for that matter women of a certain taste level.
We Americans rarely can compete with our European brethren in the fashion arena as we tend to want to be trendy or young or hip which is why so many of what we call designers today are nothing more than glorified stylists…and that is with few exceptions, in particular Mr. Ambrose, Prabal Gurung and Jason Wu. This triumvirate is capable of bringing real fashion back to New York and being worthy of comparison to the Euros. They are the 21st Century Bill Blasses, Norman Norells and even Oscar de la Rentas.
Mr. Ambrose’s current Fall 2011 collection harkens back to a time when there were retailers like Martha in NYC or Grace Jones in Saledo TX or Giorgio in Beverly Hills and when department stores had salons rather than racks of clothes. The words that come to mind are slick, urbane, chic, grown up, sophisticated and luxurious. The materials employed in this collection can only be construed as luxurious; sable, fox, mink, alligator, sequin, bouillon and cashmere for starters. Even though we may not be enjoying the most robust economy my feeling is that since these clothes are for rich ladies, young and old, and those ladies will always have money for fabulous and distinctive apparel.
The photos were taken (by me) today at the Norman Ambrose tableau vivant which took place at Lincoln Center and my hope is that they do these incredible clothes the justice they deserve. Having seen countless collections during my career, I am unabashedly thankful to have been included today……Thanks to Brynne, Roger and Mauricio of Mao PR.

2011 WISHFUL THINKING

There are many stylish changes that one can wish for in the coming year. So, let’s see what might hopefully change in the coming year when we have a look at streets of where we live, watch TV, catch up on the celebrity news or find when we go shopping.
One would think that with all the hair salons that we would see men and women with great haircuts and women who find it necessary to wear a spot of makeup to improve their looks. Instead we have hair that looks like it was cut with a food processor and either no makeup or so much that you like Snooki. Somewhere there is a happy medium for both, not to mention that one should try to look their numerical age and not the age they wish they were.
In keeping with appearances, let’s think of how many young people and older ones as well, who have decided that God gave them blank skin so that they could be walking, living sketch pads. Has anyone taken the time to realize that getting a tribal tattoo at 25 doesn’t quite hold the same allure on a 60 year old whose skin has begun to sag? People need to think beyond the single moment when the whim hits.
Let’s have a look at some style hints for 2011. Wearing clothes that do not fit properly do not make you look thinner or sexier. Wearing clothes that are barely held together by a few threads, does not make you look hipper or “down with it” or whatever phrase comes to mind. Women looking like sausages in weenie skins are not sexy whether you are 17 or 70….get a size that fits. Every store has mirrors…use them!! Men wearing shrunken clothes look like they are still trying to wear their clothes from when they were passing into puberty. It is not becoming on anyone no matter what your age and no matter how much you spend crafting the look.
Continuing on with my hopeful changes for the sartorially and cosmetically challenged in the year 2011, let’s talk shoes and stockings (pantyhose). It seems that editorially speaking and in real life, pantyhose/stockings, used to be an essential element of being well dressed and well groomed. This seemingly small “must” has all but disappeared. Stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Bergdorf’s, Barneys and all the rest you can think of, had hosiery counters if not departments…all gone! ; not to mention every drug store.
As an observer of fashion, it seems that women today have forgotten what it is like to be well groomed and have instead opted for the easy way out. Yes, going without hose of any kind is indeed a less costly path for everyday dressing but there is more at stake than just finances. One might take into consideration that stockings may just cover the legs but they are indeed an amazingly erotic weapon. Panty hose does more than just cover the legs; they hold you in from waist to toe for a clean smooth look that cannot be otherwise achieved. The major plus is that you look finished. Kim Khardashian is not a classy girl just a wannabe with a giant ass and cleavage who will do anything to get her picture taken : thusly not a role model.
Shoes for men and women have taken a hit in the past 2 decades as the unrivaled winners in this classification have to be flip flops and sneakers of all varieties. Guys, it is really not ok to wear a suit or sport coat with athletic shoes unless you are under 21. Ladies, no it is not ok to wear flip flops to the office at any time of year for any number of reasons including cleanliness. Also ladies, do not believe that the higher the heel the better you look as so many may have already learned, there is an art to walking properly in stilettos and that goes for platforms as well.
Lastly, let’s have a look at that “scruffy” look that seems to have swept this world, country, state and city by storm. Guys, for the most part, look dirty and unkempt as they think it is a license to not shave…..ever! In case anyone is interested, it takes work to keep up the casual scruffy look of lets say…………Hugh Jackman.
The deal is this, why doesn’t everyone take a long hard look in the mirror and resolve to change at least one of the mentioned afflictions for the New Year? If you want to help the economy, then help the every department store and retail stores in your home town….buy good shoes, wear stockings a few times a week, get a shave and look like you really are going somewhere important even if you are not. Since we can never have a do over for a first impression, make people notice how you have decided to present yourself for 2011.

Personal Style With Lucinda Chambers, Amanda Harlech and Alexa Chung

Vogue's Lucinda Chambers // Photos by Darren Gerrish

Have you ever heard of quite such a stylish line up?!

Vogue UK's fashion director (and immense personal style crush of mine) Lucinda Chambers, Amanda Harlech, long time Chanel collaborator and muse, and Alexa Chung, British fashion icon and much much copied It girl.

Ugh, I was getting giddy with excitement just thinking about what this trio would discuss on the subject of personal style at this weekend's Vogue Festival.

L-R: Lucinda Chambers, Amanda Harlech, Alexa Chung and compère Lisa Armstrong

Read on for the low down on what did happen amongst this melting pot of style minds…

First up, what did they all wear?

For Lucinda it was a mix of designer, high street and vintage. Her textured coat which fashion friends “thought was Celine” was in fact a charity shop find for £20, her skirt though was, yes, Celine “an investment” and her white shirt was from the high street which Lucinda had customised by fraying the cuffs “I love double sided sticky tape!”

For Amanda day time dressing meant Chanel couture from top to toe. Amanda looked breath takingly elegant and at ease, testament to the fact that this lady owns it.

Alexa wore Marc Jacobs, and looked both ladylike and perfectly dishevelled as ever.

Listening to Lucinda, Amanda and Alexa discuss style captivated myself and the audience. The three of them, despite their polar styles agreed that what truly makes someone stylish is a comfort within themselves, and experimentation with clothes until you find a ‘uniform’ as Alexa called it, which you are happy to fall back on day in day out. Lucinda spoke of how being able to express oneself requires us first to understand what our 'self' is. Therefore, in Lucinda's books, everyone should make mistakes and get to know themselves. Lucinda then told us of a 'lilac phase' she had, which taught her the lesson that lilac was indeed not for her.

Alexa regaled us with tales of her battles with US TV producers ahead of her show It’s On With Alexa Chung. Not only did Alexa specify within her contract that she would have total control over her own styling and image - which you’ll be happy to hear remained authentically Alexa with ‘Kurt Cobain hair and denim overalls'; but when it came to the meeting which Alexa knew would spell the end of her show (which was cancelled after one season) she pulled out all sartorial stops thinking “these men are going to have to look a woman in the eye and say we are canceling your show” cue a pencil skirt, heels and blouse. Indeed Alexa went on to expand that when dressing she thinks of:

“ How I feel
How I want to feel
How I want others to feel about me”

The rules to power dressing peeps.

All three women spoke of times when they experimented with their style, Amanda in a gingham two piece as a young girl, Lucinda in a home-made petticoat as a secretary at Vogue.

As Lucinda said, you have to “try try try everything! Do not lose your bottle.”

Amanda reinforced this notion of style bravery “you cannot care what other people think”

All women agreed that style is the opposite of fashion, it is about dissimilating trends so that you may incorporate what is right for you into your wardrobe.

One of my favourite quotes from the whole day was from Lucinda, who said that “style is the first thing someone will notice about you after your smile.”

I have to admit that I flit between feeling totally comfortable with my style, to weeks of being in a rut. Perhaps it is as these ladies suggest a case of trying everything, learning what suits us and sticking to what we feel best in. They all agreed on culling our wardrobes - this will definitely be the next stop for me.

How do you guys feels about personal style? What is your day to day uniform? I want to hear it all!

Love,

FASHION BY THE RULES: The Finale, Haute Couture

The final collections have been shown…the season hobbled to a close on a more promising note but certainly not equal to its opening performance.

Jean Paul Gaultier showed, what I consider to be a less than fabulous collection, but still managed to be true to his DNA. The collection was short on his usual sense of humor and his normal theatrics, yet there were beautiful wearable clothes for the ladies, both young and old, to own, wear and adore. Actually there were even a few one might lust for which, this season, seems to be a less likely occurrence than in past seasons.

Elie Saab, while a relative newcomer to the haute couture, has certainly shown his ability to rival the best of them. Mr. Saab was true to the brand DNA and thusly showed an extravagant collection for red carpet events as well as any formal event and even some wonderful short affairs with all the bells and whistles that have made him famous. This was one of the strongest collections of the season and I am sure that the faithful as well as the angst ridden newcomers will be lined up for these show stopping confections.

One can only hope the coming ready to wear collections will not follow the less than stellar showings of the couture.

NY FASHION WEEK ..MARCHESA,KORS,BLASS,PROENZA SCHOULER, KRAKOFF, MILLY

Marchesa

With more than just a nod to Dior and McQueen, the designing ladies of Marchesa have delivered one more spectacular collection of red carpet and camera ready confections. The trend of folds and the origami aspects have more than been adapted to suit the specifications of the Marchesa look.

Michael Kors

The crown prince of urbane, chic and slick sportswear has presented his take on Spring 2011and he will be keeping his crown yet one more season. Mr. Kors has moments of spectral colors surrounded by whites and neutral that will delight men and women of many age groups. The look is softer than and not as rigid as perhaps his Fall collection but nonetheless ever so divine.

Bill Blass

Jeffrey Monteiro has been assigned the huge task of reviving, yet one more time, the namesake collection. He offers glimmers of hope that he might have an understanding of the DNA of Bill Blass and hopefully he will be showing more and more. Razor sharp edges and impeccable tailoring were always part of the DNA as well as the total look of an outfit. There is a long road ahead if Mr. Monteiro has the ability to restore the luster and the glory of the iconic brand.

Proenza Schouler boys, Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez, delivered a grown up collection without all the gimmicks of over styling. There were great dresses and wonderful 2pc. dressing but when evening approached there were some very dicey moments with transparency. The young look was further thwarted by that awful below the knee hemline which flattters almost no one.
Reed Krakoff is insistent on being a designer entity unto himself despite his success with Coach. In his namesake collection, which is in its second season, the DNA has not yet been fully developed and that's where the issues begin. One can assume that the collection will remain on its minimalist path but when Mr. Krakoff veers off that path, then we see trouble. Again we see the folds and the origami work of so many collections but here we see it become clumsy. Even his use of red jolts us as with his black: they become odious under his hand.
Milly,Michelle Smith. deftly delivers a light hearted , colorful, sophisticated grouping with great patterns and mixes of color. The collection has little age discrimination and offers up cosmoplitan and slightly retro clothes for all ages.
