On the Rivet - Art & Fashion - Well we like that!

And I like it when my weeks meanderings turn into some sort of mostly coherent visual significance; and photography for you. My first show of the week (starts 3rd shot down) was Tyrannium by Dionysos Anton at KUDOS Gallery which features youth-style inspired art and a number of jackets that had been artified as well as rugs/wall hangings from upcycled fabrics, the denim wall work is pictured below. All along with a collection of drawings large and small and sculptural pieces that were not 'fashion' a billy/go-cart (looked like a dad build to me); a forest of stakes.. a video edit of Japanese Godzilla animations - everything a budding young heart could desire - and I loved it!

Of course it's also VIVID Sydney so I have been prowling around working on my 2016 VIVID photographic project. Which is just how I came to bump into two of the artists who were servicing their artworks, which were a little worse for wear after the terrible weekend weather.. Then last night the Duchamp meets Non-Objective works of Joe Wilson & Chanelle Collier at their show ART THAT DOES at Mils Gallery; and a diversely stylish art crowd very much in evidence. All of which was capped off by the jacket, patches, rings and tattooed fingers of the lady immediately below; as I left the Shakespeare Hotel after a steak and chips and another glass of ale. As always lots to see in Sydney, these shows are all on now; links below.

Matiny Ng - The (new) Schiaparelli, of Geometric Fashion.

Fashion is not art and art is not fashion. But is that really so? It's always such a tussle between the decorative and the profound; the amusing and the serious; the functional and the.. non functional, the sublime; the ridiculous! I first experienced Matiny Ng's designs at the Raffles Byzantium graduate show in December 2013; playful and bold, wearable if you were game, distinctive and creative; using the circle and the square motif. The Menswear there, perhaps being the more radically inspired of the designs.

This year she is back as part of the Raffles International Showcase at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia along with fellow students from that 2013 show and others. Matiny Ng showcases her new label 580 and her SS 15/16 range. The pieces again designed around circle and square motifs speak to me of Non Objective Abstraction in art. Meanwhile, in the men's range there seem to be some sort of Luis Buñuel surrealist clerics, or perhaps it's that fashion parade from Fellini's movie Roma; no no its more Non Objective art as fashion from Matiny Ng. Wearable? I mean really how dare you.. Who cares!

Even though the 11th Annual Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition closed earlier this month, if you are a FASHION COUTURE ENTHUSIAST, you still have plenty of time to swing by the FIDM Museum in Downtown Los Angeles to enjoy the beautiful "Fashion Philanthropy: The Linda and Steven Plochocki Collection".

The Exhibition showcases collected, purchased and donated items--both garments and accessories--from the Plochocki's collection, and explores Linda's fascination with all things floral and embroidered. In addition to 19th and 20th century pieces, the show also highlights contemporary designs by Prada, Valentino, Alexander McQueen, and Raf Simons for Christian Dior. FIDM Museum Creative Director Peter Lam's hand-crafted paper flowers adorn the walls and accentuate the blush and grey color scheme.
