What to Expect on the Red Carpets During Awards Season 2024

 If red carpet stylists had their way, awards season 2024 would be a joyous celebration of emerging designers, diverse talent and archival looks with an underlining note of thoughtfulness regarding the state of fashion. But, there are brand partnerships at play, new collections to promote and sponsors to keep happy. Hollywood’s wardrobes become Tetris puzzles, as celebrity dressers navigate samples, alterations and custom commissions, while keeping in mind both the couture and ready-to-wear trends and incorporating some semblance of sustainability in line with the industry’s commitment to do better for our planet. A dress is never just a dress during awards season.

If this sounds like an impossible tick-boxing exercise, there will be overarching themes at play at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Oscars, as stylists fall for the same buzzy designers, directional silhouettes and whimsical embellishments that chime with the current mood, but have lasting impact. Vogue picked the brains of three heavyweight dressers to find out what we can expect from the nominees and guests on film’s big nights in 2024.

Fashion, darling

The SAG-AFTRA strike turned the “fashion space into an art form”, argues Holly White, who dresses emerging stars, like Heartstopper’s Joe Locke. Explainer: in the absence of premieres, celebs turned out to shows, dinners and store events in outfits otherwise reserved for big California moments. As such, there was more experimentation, which will now trickle onto the world’s stage.

Take Sienna Miller’s quirky bump-revealing Schiaparelli moment at Vogue World: London. Undoubtedly one of the looks of the year, masterminded by stylist Harry Lambert, the fabulous white crop top and bubble skirt perhaps wouldn’t have previously found their way to the Academy Awards, but catapulted pure fashion drama to the top of conversations. After being starved of red-carpet wear in the latter part of 2023, expect awards show attendees to dream big. Come January, people will especially be leaning on the new guard – Sabato de Sarno at Gucci, Peter Hawkings at Tom Ford and Chemena Kamali at Chloé – and looking at the modern house visions set to define the year in fashion.

Disco 2024

“If there is a time to shine, it’s on the red carpet,” asserts White. “Metallics will reign and spring 2024 brought some modern silhouettes to the runway that will give this somewhat consistent trend a contemporary and updated look.” Watch out, she says, for Paco Rabanne, Alexander McQueen and Ralph Lauren.

Zadrian Smith, who styles Ariana DeBose, agrees: “That Ralph Lauren look on Christy Turlington was killer.” His other predictions, which goes hand in hand with sheeny-shiny fabrications? Sheerness and fringing. “The flapper girl is making a comeback in a big way,” notes Smith, citing heavy embellishment and relaxed silhouettes as key signifiers of the ’20s revival (keep an eye on The Attico, Prada, Jil Sander and Givenchy). On the flip side, micro hemlines will keep the after-party scene looking disco fabulous (Gucci and Tom Ford, we’re looking at you).

Faux Hawk Cut#

Looking for an edgy cut for your toddler? Try the faux hawk. The cut has a rebellious attitude and is perfect if your child loves to be the center of attention. To create the look, the sides are buzzed short by the barber – rather than shaved down entirely as in an adult mohawk. A central section of hair is then left slightly longer, and pomade or gel is used to create the spiky faux hawk effect. The cut is a favorite with lots of toddler boys because it’s grown-up and cool.#

Afro#

Let your little man’s natural curls fly free with an Afro hairstyle. It’s a cute and classic look that’s also versatile. You can shave the sides into a taper fade or even include fun designs based on your child’s personality and style. While kids’ hair is generally softer and smoother than adult hair, Afro textures can dry out. So to keep his curls looking healthy and defined, make sure you use moisturizing hair oils regularly.

Bold Fade#

A fresh look for your toddler is the bold fade. Trendy and stylish, the hairstyle has an athletic feel. As it’s so short, it’s very low maintenance and easy to style. That makes it perfect for an active boy who doesn’t like sitting still. It’s also great for busy mums and dads who are short on time. You can have a barber create this look and then maintain the short sides at home with a regular shaver.

Fringe Hairstyle#

The fringe hairstyle is a modern take on the ’80s mushroom cut. However, there are some key differences – it’s much shorter and more layered to give the cut some dimension. For those reasons, it’s an excellent cut for a boy with fine, straight hair. The fringe cut is also versatile as you can add some product to give it extra texture and attitude.

Baby Bun#

While man buns were once considered a hipster hairstyle, they’re now very mainstream. Even toddlers are rocking the style! A tiny topknot is a great way to manage your little guy’s long locks when you’re short on time. It goes with every clothing style – from edgy to preppy – and suits all hair types. For a cool Viking-inspired look, have the barber buzz the sides short and leave the center section extra long to create the baby bun.

Mini Mohawk#

Like the faux hawk, the mini mohawk is a favorite with little boys. It’s a simple and fun cut that’s a mix between the faux hawk and a quiff. If you’d prefer to keep your son’s hair short – or if you have to for school or nursery – the mini mohawk is a great way to add a touch of individuality. It’s a quick and easy style that you can easily copy at home. Create the center spikes with a little pomade or gel, shape the hair into points with your fingers, and you’re done!

Natural Curly Hair#

It can be challenging to style your boy’s mop of curls. As a result, it’s easier to leave them natural and untamed. However, there are some crucial curl care tips to know. Firstly, curly hair needs more regular trims than straight hair as the ends can dry out and break more easily. It also tangles quickly, so a shorter style can work well if you want your boy’s ringlets to stay neat. Next, use your fingers or a comb instead of a brush to prevent frizziness. Pompadour#

A favorite with child models and performers, the pompadour is an attention-grabbing style! The look is deliberately windswept with lots of drama and direction. While it takes some work, the pompadour is a hairstyle your little man will love showing off.

Quiff#

Another adult hairstyle that looks just as good on toddlers is the quiff. It’s perfect for little boys who usually wear their hair short but want to look smart for a special occasion, like a wedding or birthday. It looks best on straight hair with the short back and sides cut. It also pairs well with a fade. Use a little gel or pomade in the front section and form the hair into a quiff. Meanwhile, comb the sides flat. Doing so keeps the look neat and tidy.

Side Part

The side part suits every face shape and has a retro vibe. Popular in the ’50s and ’60s, it’s a polished way to style your toddler’s hair. It works best if he has a naturally deep side part. Using a fine-toothed comb and pomade or gel, smooth the hair across from one side to the other. The cut is ideal for boys with naturally straight and fine hair, as these hair types have minimal frizz and volume.

Spiky Hair

Boys with thick hair have lots of styling options. One is the spiky look. Similar to the faux hawk and pompadour, it’s a haircut that will turn heads. Sure we can't get enough of dramatic sleeves, patent leather pieces, and white boots. But there's one 2018 trend that's really transforming the fashion industry. I have to admit, I (a legit girlie girl) even tried on a top I recently bought from the men's department for my boyfriend. And I loved the way it looked on me so much, I contemplated keeping it for myself. Sure, I wore it as a mini dress, but still the unisex trend is one that we will all wear in some shape or form during 2018.

Look at the biggest runway shows, and you'll see feminine labels already mixing in menswear-inspired pieces all over the place—like masculine plaid suits, over-sized hoodies, and slouchy sweatpants. The boys are also borrowing from the girls with long tunics that have dress-like silhouettes, and we'll never forget about the male romper RompHims.

This collection of artistic and historical value is able to steal the attention of the top fashion lovers.

As a fashion house with high artistic value, Gucci collection design always comes with detail, embroidery, ornaments, and rich in texture. Alessandro Michele, Creative Director Gucci always succeeded in presenting the values in tune with the collection and runway place.

Call it a collection of Gucci Resort 2018, Alessandro deliberately chose the Pitti Palace, Florence, Italy that represents the beauty of the Renaissance. Of course this is in line with the theme that carried the fashion brand. In addition, Alessandro deliberately designed benches decorated with poems by Bacchus 'Song by Lorenzo de' Medici to increase his artistic value.

Reported by Vogue, this fashion show is also backed by a harp music game that is in seven different rooms. This installation is in harmony with the nuanced collection of flora and fauna that characterize the Renaissance era. Print roses that look natural not only found in dress and female tops, but also for men.

The touch of the Renaissance was increasingly felt with a headdress in the form of gold leaf with a very thick with the history of that period. Even some models use accessories on the hands and faces to make it look artistic.

Meanwhile WWD released, singer Fransesco Bianconi also walked on the runway using a tapestry suit combined with red roses. In addition to flowers, long-haired man is also decorated Gucci collection with a dragon motif on the front of the clothing.

Fransesco also appeared eccentric with jogging pants, ruffle tops and bright burgundy matelassé mantles. He also did not hesitate mengumbar Gucci logo on midi skirt, men's trousers, bomber jacket, and fur.

Despite spending 200,000 euros in renting Pitti Palace, Gucci successfully brings his brand back to his hometown as well as cultural roots in Florence. Gucci also plans to donate 2 million euros within three years in order to restore the Boboli park as part of the 'Primavera di Boboli' cultural project. Filipiniana Winner: Miss Earth Philippines wins the Gold Medal for Asia at the "Miss Earth 2017 National Costumes Competition"--Century Park Hotel Manila Philippines

Last night was the much-anticipated National Costumes Competition of the 2017 Miss Earth Beauty Pageant, occurring in the Philippines. The contest--which took place at the Century Park Hotel in Manila--featured the 86 contestants from all over the world showing off their National Costumes grouped by geographical regions including Central and North America, South America, Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa and so on.

Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded for the top costumes (as deemed by the judges) for each geographical region. The Gold Medals (top prize) for National Costumes went to Miss Earth Philippines for Asia, Miss Earth Russia for Eastern Europe, Miss Earth Portugal for Central Western Europe, Miss Earth Bolivia for South America, Miss Earth Ghana for Africa, and Miss Earth Guatemala for Central and North America.

Medal Costume Couture: Winning costumes at the "Miss Earth 2017" National Costumes Competition, Century Park Hotel Manila Philippines

Now that we know the judges' picks, here are MY TOP 15 FAVORITES of the Miss Earth 2017 National Costumes beginning with NUMBER ONE:

1. Miss Earth Philippines Karen Ibasco: Karen won the Gold for Asia, and she gets MY GOLD PRIZE for BEST COSTUME of all the contestants! "Miss Earth Philippines'" costume was a Filipiniana Terno designed by Louis Pangilinan. It was EXTRAORDINARY! From the statement-making necklace...to the off-the-shoulder Mantilla top...to the fan...

...to the intricately designed and cross patterned multi-godet paneled Charles James-like crinoline gown-skirt...WOW! This costume should be in a museum! Kudos to the designer and all the very talented artists and sewers who made this.

2. Miss Earth Thailand Paweensuda Drouin: My second favorite was the costume worn by the stunning Paweensuda Drouin, Miss Earth Thailand. This stunning creation represents the Hmong Thai tribe, showcasing the gorgeous intricate silver headdress and batik printed fabric of the Hmong. The exquisite detail on the headdress alone deserves a medal! And I do love how chic the top and skirt look. Take that crown away and that outfit alone could be worn at a very fancy black-tie gala in Bangkok!

3. Miss Earth Nepal Rojina Shrestha: This costume was stage impacting, beautiful and fab enough to make my Top Three! The mixing of the Sari with the Hindu gods imagery...and those striking red and gold colors and silk fabrics...everything about this looked regal and very Costume Couture!

4. Miss Earth Guatemala Maria Jose Castaneda: Maria Jose's costume won the Gold for Central and North America. And I can see why; it was my 4th Best among the 86 contestants. This gorgeous creation was made and designed by Guatemalan designer Cesar Alejandro Portillo who creates many of the national costumes for "Miss Guatemala" contestants. This costume is to me THE BEST one in the "Pre-Columbian Fantasy Diva" category. The Guatemalan fabric, the colors, the feathered headdress, the sequined cape...I can't imagine how much work and time went into this and I really hope Cesar was paid A TON of money for this! Muy Bien! 

5. Miss Earth Ghana Maud Fadi: "Miss Earth Ghana" was my 5th Best and the  highest spot for a contestant form Africa. I was blown away by her presentation (she came out covered partially using her cape) and then opened it up to reveal the fabulous Kente cloth patterns. The aqua blue mermaid-shaped gown featured multicolored sequins at the bust and torso as well as bottom portion of the dress--and if that wasn't enough, it had a matching Kente cloth pleated peplum. Oh, and then there was her Ghana Coat of Arms headdress! This was a National Costume MOMENT Ladies & Gentlemen!

6. Miss Earth Japan Yasuyo Saito: "Miss Earth Japan" wore this multicolored kimono robe and dress--and she looked GLORIOUS! The costume itself was superb: The colors and the silk brocade fabrication were INCREDIBLE. Kimono DIVA!

7. Miss Earth Costa Rica Fernanda Rodriguez: At No. 7 in my Top 15 Best National Costume List is "Miss Earth Costa Rica". I loved the look of this costume, especially the bold colors and prominent feathers in the front. The costume itself represents the exotic plants and migratory birds that live together in Costa Rica and was designed by Filipino designer Maestro John. I wished he could have also designed fabulous shoes to have gone with the costume--as opposed to these off-the-rack nude platform heels.

8. Miss Earth Canada Jacqueline Marsh: OK, there are Drag Queens in Canada DYING to get their manicured hands on this costume!! This white and red UBER snowflake costume was created by Filipino designer Tohe Rojas Gantuangco and he did a FABULOUS job--take a look at all those HUNDREDS (possibly thousands!) of maple leaf snow flakes attached to her bodysuit and "wings". And the red sequined headdress as well as matching red details throughout the costume really brought home the "Go Canada!" theme.

9. Miss Earth Sri Lanka Shyama Dahayanaka: I loved "Miss Earth Sri Lanka's" Bird Couture costume at the "Miss Earth 2017" National Costume Competition. This feathered and multicolored costume represents the Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl (seen in lower top photo) and was very impacting for many reasons including that fabulous headdress, the sequined applique and of course, the actual fowl feathers. She was a Bird Goddess in this!

10. Miss Earth Malaysia Cherish Ng: "Miss Earth Malaysia" wore this costume titled "Khatulistiwa: the Goddess Flora" which was created by Borneo Republic Malaysia Creations. It was my No. 10 out of 15 Best Costumes of "Miss Earth 2017". The costume is inspired by the Latin name of Flora, the goddess of plants, flowers, and fertility as well as “Khatulistiwa”--the Malay word for equator. On Earth, the Equator is an imaginary line on the surface, dividing the Earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres. As a country surrounded by the sea and located near the equator, Malaysia naturally receives plenty of sunlight. As a result, various species of flower can be seen across Malaysia. This costume symbolizes beautiful flowers in Malaysia. During the production of this costume, recycled items were used namely aluminum pull tabs from drink cans, plastic bottle caps, used buttons, used wire phone and used floor rugs. In other words, not only is this fabulous for the "Miss Earth" Beauty Pageant...this design would be great for the "Project Runway" Unconventional Challenge! 

11. Miss Earth Mongolia Tugs-Amgalan Batjargal: I liked this costume worn by "Miss Earth Mongolia". It looked refined, expensive and still stage-impacting. The silk fabric with fur trim looked rich and that headdress with jeweled and sequined details really took her to a Mongolian Queen level!

12. Miss Earth Vietnam La Thi Ha Thu: Made by Vietnamese designer Nguyen Minh Cong from one of his recent collections entitled "The Dreamers", this costume worn by "Miss Earth Vietnam" represents a strong female soldier. Made of a natural silk fabric, as well as glittering lame fabric, the look features a leotard/body suit, midriff peplum corset, overskirt and lotus flower details. The lotus flowers symbolize the "sturdiness and softness of Vietnamese women" according to the designer. I thought it was chic, modern and costume-impacting. I just wished she would have worn THE SAME DIVA shoes she wore in the pre-pageant photoshoot above--as opposed to the actual contest! What happened to those fabulous shoes? Were they lost in a luggage snafu?

13. Miss Earth  Panama Erika Parker: My thirteenth choice for Best Costume is "Miss Earth Panama". I loved the colors, the story, her presentation and yes--the CROWN! Her costume is entitled "Pollera Congo" (a pollera is a full skirt). This folkloric costume comes from the Panamanian province of Colon...

The costume represents the women of this area and their traditional dress. The woman is THE QUEEN and head of the family and therefore, the crown. The mixed pieces of fabric comes from when the ethnically African people in Panama were slaves, their masters would only give them leftovers of their fabric to use on their clothes and therefore, that's how they made their polleras...using discarded fabric from their Masters. The costume and overall look just made me smile. She may be barefoot but she looked RICH and EXUBERANT.

14. Miss Earth Mexico Karen Bustos: Karen comes from San Luis Potosi in Mexico and therefore, her costume paid tribute to the fabrication used in San Luis Potosi traditional dress. I loved the fashion-fab design (sleek column gown with side front slit!), the great red-and-white print, and super headdress adorned with red rose-shaped satin. I think it's so great when a designer can take a traditional folkloric dress and take it to another, almost-red carpet level! Muy bien!

15. Miss Earth Venezuela Ninoska Vasquez: Finally, I wanted to add the costume worn by "Miss earth Venezuela" in my Top 15 List. Ninoska's costume was designed by Carlos Perez and it was a sequined bodysuit of Earth Flora-and-Fauna...and Water Gorgeousness...

The look includes details representing Venezuelan Orchids, as well as the mountains, the rivers and birds of the country. To top it all off, the blue and silver crystals falling from her arm represent the glorious Angel Falls. In line with the "Miss Earth" theme, this costume is very representative of "Mother Earth" and all the natural wonders of that troubled South American country.

Just for fun...I wanted to add this "Miss Earth 2017 National Costumes Competition" Costumes Extra...Guess what country this "National Costume" is from?

No...not the nation of "McDonalds"...this is Miss Earth BELGIUM! And yes kids, she wore a costume featuring "French Fries". Why? Because if you know your food history...French Fries are actually from Belgium! Historians claim that potatoes were being fried--since the late 1600's (!) in Belgium. Soooo, yeah, that's Miss Earth Belgium's national costume. And I LIKE IT!

CONGRATULATIONS Miss Earth Philippines! Your costume was MY Number One Costume of the "Miss Earth 2017" National Costumes!
