7 Greatest Versace Moments in Hip-Hop History

So who else got to catch the infamous Versace FW16 runway show that was held in Milan last night ?

Wasn't it just unbelievably young and fresh looking for a brand that usually excels at exuding opulence and glamour ?! I completely fell in love with the cool blues hues opening the presentation, enhanced with athleisure meet city-girl chic influences. It is pretty safe to say that sexiness is back at Versace (Thank God!), but, keeping in mind the rather hard-core, female-empowerment mood Donatella set us up with last season, it’s a different, more various kind of sexy, embracing models of a different range of shapes and ages. Another great step towards putting the brand more out there for a wider audience to indulge in.

Truth is, the Italian Fashion house is most likely one of the most accessible (yet, not necessarily affordable!) high-end luxury brands on the market, catering to not only high society, celebrities and socialites, but also to a handful (or more like two!) of notorious influencers of this generation, coming from and belonging to various social and cultural backgrounds. Once again, Versace killed it. And to welcome yet, another hit, celebrity model-mad collection from the Great Italian, I wanted to share with you my take on the greatest Versace moment in Hip-Hop history…

1. The Notorious B.I.G. "One More Chance/Stay With Me Remix" (1995)

"I'm clockin ya, Versace shades watchin' ya"

Biggie was rarely seen without a pair of Medusa's on his temples, in fact, he had dozens of the same expensive pair ! He would lose some and give some away, so he had to keep purchasing them (laughs!). Publicly praised for his role in bringing the exclusivity of the Fashion house to the streets, Biggie took it upon himself to step right out of his natural environment to become one of the first hip-hop stars, along Pac' and Diddy to regularly attend Versace’s runway presentations; a trend that has since become the norm.

2. Tupac Models at Versace Fashion Show (1996)

Speaking of which (Tupac, that is), the East Harlem rapper has not only had an everlasting influence on the landscape of current day rap and hip-hop, but also led the way for all of the stylish rappers who have followed his lead, trend-wise. Keeping in mind, this was at a time when rappers were much more concerned about how to keep their sneakers looking fresh than sitting front-row(!), Versace was one of the first Fashion houses to embrace hip-hop and benefit from the popularity of the street culture by giving away custom-made clothes and invites to shows to a handful of big names in the industry. The alliance reached its peak when Tupac, dressed in an all-gold suit and accompanied by Kidada Jones, (his girlfriend at the time) plus two bodyguards, walked the runway during Versace's 1996 menswear show in Milan.

Well done, Donatella !

3. Lil Kim's Versace Wig (2001)

Fashion Week has always the opportunity for designers to give new concepts a try. Back in 2001, it was, for Donatella Versace, the perfect excuse to flaunt her hyper-sexy, celebrity-made vision of Fashion as Hollywood A-listers lined her front row: Salma Hayek dazzled in copper paillettes, Pamela Anderson, barely contained in a sequined tube top, and of course, Lil' Kim, gushing in a platinum, Greek Key logo-ed wig, which drove the paparazzi completely crazy.

4. Kanye West "All Falls Down" (2004)

"Rollies and Pashas done drove me crazy/I can't even pronounce nothing, pass that ver-say-see!"

A clear proof that Ye can also be funny at times; “Ver-say-see” is a mispronunciation of the opulent brand (pronounced vair-sah-chay). He is basically making fun of the people wanting to buy luxury items from brands they can’t correctly pronounce the names. We can also see the similaties between Kanye's verse and a line from Joe Eszterhas' movie Showgirls in which, main character Nomi says: “Thanks. It’s a Ver-say-see!”, after being complemented on her dress ;)

5. Pharrell on Clipse's "Mr. Me Too" (2006)

Lyric: "Up in Donatella crib, me and like ten hoes"

Not everyone can claim to be part of the cool kids and be allowed to sit at the table of the Versace clan but for some, (Ahem, Pharrell Williams!) these expensive, luxurious vacations are like a week to week thing. Despite having the body of a 12-year-old boy(!), he apparently drives Italian women, including Donatella herself, crazy with his cute sneakers and skateboarding skills ;)

6. Pusha T on Kanye West's "Runaway" (2010)

"You can't blame 'em, they ain't never seen Versace sofas"

It is pretty clear that Pusha feels for a certain type of women he refers to as gold diggers; when girls who grew up under lesser conditions have had a taste of luxury, they will never want to go back to their old life. Kanye most likely was the inspiration for this bar. During the Summer of 2009, when the creative process of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy took place, all G.O.O.D music artists were trapped with Ye in his studio (read here, mansion) in Hawaii for 2-3 months during which, Ye blogged and tweeted about Versace furnitures that were decorating the property. Let’s just say he got Pusha hyped up about it ;)

7. Don C, Drake & the Versace blue silk Barocco shirt

Classic case of who wore it best: Drake on his 25th birthday party in Vegas vs. Don C, pairing the look nicely with a gold Versace bracelet. You do you think wore the haute piece best, huh ?

I'm gonna be super unbiased here(!) and I'll put my money on Drake ;)

Well, fashionistas and costume design aficionados, Tuesday was the Opening Day of the 6th Annual Outstanding Art Television Costume Design Exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising/FIDM, my alma mater, and college of which I am the Official Fashion Spokesperson.

Nick Verreos and KTLA-TV's Gayle Anderson, 6th Annual Outstanding Art of Costume Design Costume Design Exhibition, FIDM Museum

On Monday, I had the pleasure of filming some Morning TV segments for KTLA-TV Channel 5 LIVE direct from the FIDM Museum and the brand new exhibition with the always fantastic (and my TV Production Segment MUSE!) Gayle Anderson. We had such a blast filming these segments. Miss Gayle is my "sister from another mister" darlings! LOVE her. As a special VIP treat, two of the Emmy® nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Costume
Design costume designers from this past year--Ruth Myers ("Hemingway and Gellhorn") and Chrisi Karvonides ("American Horror Story")--were there for some of the KTLA-TV Morning Show interviews at FIDM Museum so I had the honor of meeting them and of course, getting some behind-the-scenes costume design DISH.

Nick Verreos and Costume Designer Chrisi Karvonides: I had such a ball chatting with Chrisi---she also designed the costumes for ABC's "Pan Am" series pilot so she gave me such great behind-the-scenes dish on the Pan Am stewardess uniforms (you know I LOVE me some Stewardess Uniforms!!).

Nick Appearance Minute: FIDM San Francisco "3 Days of Fashion 2012" : The Recap!

San Francisco "3 Days of Fashion" Love:

OMG!!! Nick Verreos and FIDM San Francisco "3 Days of Fashion 2012" attendee--and her FIDM "vintage logo" sweatshirt

Last week, I had some very important business meetings (relating to a possible "NV by Nick Verreos" line I have been diligently working on) in NYC. Once I finished the meetings, I got on a plane and flew to one of my other favorite cities in the good ol' US of A: San Francisco! I was scheduled to make a "Nick Visit" as part of my FIDM "3 Days of Fashion 2012" tour at the wonderful Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising San Francisco campus last Wednesday.

Nick Verreos, FIDM San Francisco "3 Days of Fashion 2012"

The weather in SF this past week was GORGEOUS! Warm but not too hot and  very clear (No fog in SF: who knew!?). The FIDM SF campus is located in the heart of Union Square so on my way there--with my trusty NIKOLAKI confidante David Paul (who of course, flew with me!)--it was very difficult to keep away from going into EVERY store to do some retail damage.

Red Carpet in San Francisco: Model Rachael Sitz modeling one of my NIKOLAKI Couture gowns--a lavender silk chiffon hand-beaded sequined column gown

There was no time for that, it was all about my Appearance and showing some of my NIKOLAKI Collection dresses to all the high school students who were in attendance for this final third day of the "3 Days of Fashion".

Welcome Nick: Nick Verreos at FIDM San Francisco "3 Days of Fashion 2012"

Over 100 students plus some of their mom's and dad's greeted me with a wonderful "San Francisco" welcome!! I spoke about my time as a young boy drawing all the stewardess uniforms while traveling on trips with my mom and dad, as well as how I decided to attend FIDM and all that has happened since, including "Project Runway", all my TV Red Carpet Expert work and of course, dressing celebs like Katy Perry, Beyonce and Heidi Klum. Speaking of my NIKOLAKI designs...

Designer and His Fashion: Nick Verreos and model Rachael Sitz in NIKOLAKI Collection silk chiffon column gown with hand-beaded lavender sequins and peek-a-boo top detail and...

Auf Wiedersehen? Nick Verreos checking out the "Rock the Runway" finalists, FIDM San Francisco "3 Days of Fashion 2012"

Then, after my "Nick Talk" and NIKOLAKI mini-fashion presentation, it was on to judging the "Rock the Runway" Contest--where "3 Days of Fashion" attendees were told to dress in their most "original" outfits which expressed their most "unique" styles.

Serious Judging: Nick Verreos, Julia Anne Hill and David Paul of NIKOLAKI , "Rock the Runway" Contest, FIDM San Francisco "3 Days of Fashion 2012"

I had the privilege of being one of the judges,--along with my NIKOLAKI design partner David Paul, FIDM Alumna Julia Anne Hill (she's Apparel and Design Director/Social Media Specialist for Clinton Kelly Inc.) and two hand-picked FIDM SF "3 Days of Fashion 2012" attendees. The Contest was SO much fun--not so much fun to judge (it was very, very difficult since they were ALL very good!)--but fun to see all of the students' ensembles!

McQueen'ed: One of our faves was this one young man named Diego Rivera (I know--just like the Mexican painter!)--you can see him in the photo above wearing the denim shirt, McQueen scarf and black Meggings (male leggings). I teased him because he also had FAB accessories including very expensive Hermes "Collier de Chien" cuff and Cartier "Love" bracelet. I wondered (out loud!) who his Sugar Daddy was--and if I could have his phone number??

The Winner:

Colorful Winner: Nick Verreos and co-judge Julia Anne Hill and the two student judges pose with the Winner of the "Rock the Runway" contest--in the middle wearing the apple green hot-shorts and striped sweater--FIDM San Francisco "3 Days of Fashion 2012"

SF Smiles: (Left to right) Nick Verreos, Trudy Noren (FIDM SF College Representative and Special Events), Julia Anne Hill and David Paul, FIDM San Francisco "3 Days of Fashion 2012"

Once again, it was a very successful and fantastic FIDM "3 Days of Fashion" in San Francisco--I had so much fun meeting all the students, their mom's and dad's, judging the contest, as well as showing them my NIKOLAKI designs. I LOVE SF and cannot wait to come back!!!

Nick Verreos and Orbit Gum: Geek To Chic Contest, People En Español and Chica Orbit!!!

Fashion + Gum= ORBIT!!!

Quieres Chicle? Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez in Nick Verreos /Orbit Gum Gown, People En Español 50 Más Bellos Event

I am SO EXCITED to announce that I am the "Style Guy" for "Chicle Orbit"
--the most stylish gum in the WORLD!!!!! And as part of this, Orbit announced a fun contest for the Spanish-speaking fans called "Geek To Chic".

Those who entered this contest (by submitting photos) now have the chance to have their look "transformed" from Geek--to CHIC--by none other than, ME!!! Si, YO!!! (yes, I'm so Bi-lingual!) and then showcase your new look FABULOSO on the People En Español 50 Más Bellos/50 Most Beautiful Red Carpet coming up next week!!!

Orbit Universal Queen: Stefania Fernandez, Miss Universe 2009 in Orbit Gum-print inspired gown by Nick Verreos, People Magazine En Español "50 Más Bellos" Event, NYC

If you have been following my blog, you may already know that I have partnered in the last few years with ORBIT GUM--to design "Red Carpet-worthy" dresses for the Latina Orbit Gum Girl, "Chica Orbit", as well as other celebs. Last year, I made a custom one-shoulder gown for Stefania Fernandez, Miss Venezuela 2008 and Miss Universe 2009, using an Orbit Gum print for last year's People Magazine En Español 50 Más Bellos/50 Most Beautiful Gala.

Above is my original sketch for the one shoulder gown I created and designed (and had the fabric made too!!!).

Now That's A Purse: Nick Verreos, Chica Orbit and Univision's "Fashion Guy" Rodner Figueroa, Premios Juventud 2010 After Party, Miami

I also designed a cocktail red carpet dress for the current Chica Orbit--using the same Orbit Gum Print--for her to wear during the 2010 Premios Juventud an awards show for Spanish-speaking celebrities in the areas of film, music, sports, fashion, and pop culture--kind of like a cross between the MTV Music Awards and the "Kid's Choice Awards".

In 2007 for that year's "Premios Juventud"--along with the AMAZING assistance of my NIKOLAKI design partner, David Paul--we created an ivory silk duchess satin "Watteau-back" strapless dress--with custom "Orbit Gum" pillbox hat (very Jackie Kennedy!)-both featuring the Orbit Logo. We even made the scarf to watch one of the gum flavors!

Well, CHICOS, I am back at it again---and soon I will be in New York City to attend the People En Español 50 Más Bellos/Most Beautiful Event and transform one lucky winner from Geek to Chic!!!
(and now for my Spanish-speaking Readers): Buena Suerte y acuerdate: Orbit Sensación Limpia...no matter what!
