Fashion tips for Christmas party season

According to the lighthearted survey by department store David Jones, 45 per cent of fashion mishaps witnessed are tacky Christmas-themed accessories or outfits, and 38 per cent involve guests ending up barefoot. David Jones womenswear buying manager Teneille Ferguson said it was important to stick to a dress code and make an effort if the occasion called for it.

“People struggling to walk in heels or, even worse, carrying them is never a good look,” she said. Flats and embellished sandals and slides are having a moment, so it’s the perfect excuse to avoid heels if they’re not going to stand the test of time at a function. “Being comfortable in what you’re wearing is always the safest bet to avoid a fashion faux pas. Avoiding gimmicky accessories is also key.” Ms Ferguson said the festive season was a great time to wear something a little different and more adventurous than your usual style called for. “For a work Christmas party, wearing something sophisticated and not baring too much skin would be advised,” she said. “For a barbecue or something more informal — a pretty floral dress with sandals would be perfect, as would an off-the-shoulder top or cami with jeans.”

Etiquette expert Anna Musson said the most common festive season faux pas include giving gag gifts, re-gifting without checking for cards, and gifts from the two-dollar shop. “Never arrive empty-handed, never let gift givers know you don’t like their gift, don’t avoid saying ‘Merry Christmas’. It is Christmas so embrace it. And the big no-no, being noticeably drunk at the office Christmas party,” she said.

ICE STYLE.....2017 NHK Trophy Grand Prix of Japan FIGURE SKATING COSTUMES: MEN

Sequined Swan Boy: Adam Rippon of USA during his Free Skate at 2017 NHK Trophy Grand Prix of Japan, Osaka Japan

Top Three: (L to R) Adam Rippon of USA (Silver medalist), Russia's Sergei Voronov (Gold), and Israel's Alexei Bychenko (Bronze)--2017 NHK Trophy, Osaka Japan

In my last 2017 NHK Trophy ICE STYLE post HERE, I discussed the LADIES COSTUMES highlights (and Mirai Nagasu's costume change!), so now, it's time to talk about the MEN and their costumes and how much I LOVED Adam Rippon's new Free Skate look...But, let's start with Israel's boy, Alexei Bychenko:

Alexei Bychenko of Israel: To his Short Program for this Olympic Season, Alexei went full-on "Israeli Proud" with Hava Nagila (Jewish Folk Song). His costume for this staple song at Jewish weddings and bar/bat mitzvah celebrations involved black pants, a loose/un-tucked white shirt and a beige unbuttoned vest. It's a look that works for the music but I wish it was just a teeny bit more interesting.

Free Skate to Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo--For his Free Skate, Alexei continued the black/white/beige color theme he started with his Short Program. This costume for "Pagliacci" looked more appropriate for "Hava Nagila" and I wish he would have worn this! (it was a more "fancier" look). Well, at least he didn't go full-on Pagliacci clown:

Deniss Vasiljevs of Latvia: For his Short Program to Recondita Armonia by Giacomo Puccini, Deniss went Period costume, staying slightly to the "Tosca" costume script, which takes place in the early 1800s, during the "Regency Fashion Era". He wore black pants, black brocade vest with gray back, and a ruffled-and-lace men's blouse with fluffy necktie. I liked this look and especially, keeping the interest up top with the blouson sleeves and that nice jeweled pin.

Free Skate to Put the Blame On Mame by Doctor 3, Anyone to Love and Sway by Michael Buble--For his Free Skate, Deniss went for a "Lead Singer of a Band"-look with his shimmering costume. The look had tuxedo-like pants, dark open neck shirt and a bi-colored jacket featuring one gold side as well as a blue one. This was a "costume" that I could totally see Michael Buble wear in one of his concerts so it seems appropriate that this was Deniss' choice.

Dmitry Aliev of Russia: Short Program to Masquerade Waltz by Aram Khatchaturian. I loved this costume worn by Russia's Dmitry Aliev of Russia for his Short Program. The "Admiral"-like costume featured a red/maroon colored double-breasted snug-fitting stretch jacket, gorgeous collar and cuffs with sequined appliques and those great frilly epaulets. With the accompaniment of the sweeping music and this costume, I was almost transported to a fabulous ball in Imperialist Russia.

Hiroaki Sato of Japan: For his Short Program to Terre-Merre (from "Totem" - Cirque du Soleil) by Guy Dubuc and Marc Lessard, Japan's Hiroaki Sato wore this above. If I hadn't known that the music was from "cirque du Soleil", I would have probably commented and said that his costume looked VERY "Cirque du Soleil" so....I guess, he was perfect! The striking turquoise and violet colors juxtaposed with the peacock feather-like details gave an air of a flora and fauna creature sliding through the ice as if it were a magical lake.

Sergei Voronov of Russia: Sergei skated his Short Program to Adios Nonino by Astor Piazzolla. This is a Tango and therefore, I assume Sergei was going for a "Modern Tango" look with his red and black costume. The top was a bit odd with the different panels and I was especially confused about the nude-like ones. Was this supposed to be skin-colored illusion? And if so, why the odd placements in the midriff and neck area? he looked a little more "Tron" than Tango.

Free Skate to Sarabande Suite--This all-black look was a little better than his Short program costume--only because it looked sleeker and less like a just-out-of-fashion-school student designed it. I wished those "straps" on the shirt might have been studded in black Swarovski crystals and I'm not a fan of the gloves but...at least he DID NOT wear that tacky "Ross Dress For Less" 90s belt a lot of these male figure skaters cannot let go of! So, I am happy for the small things.

Jason Brown: I discussed Jason Brown in my 2017 Skate Canada International costumes blog HERE but if I am not mistaken, I think Jason (kind of) changed his costume...kind of! For his Free Skate to Inner Love by Maxime Rodriguez at 2017 NHK Trophy, he wore this beautiful stretch velvet blue dégradé top with silver sequined accents. For the pants, he donned dark indigo-colored stretch velvet pants. So...what was different? ....

Above was what he wore at his previous Grand Prix this season--at 2017 Skate Canada International--notice the pants; they MATCH the royal blue of his top. But in the new look, they're not matching so...I guess it's kind of a costume change. Which one do you guys like better? Darker or Matching Pants?

Adam Rippon of USA: Adam wore this "Rock & Roll" Flashy look above for his Short Program to Let Me Think About It (Eddie Thoneick Remix) performed by Ida Carr feat. Fedde Le Grand. I LOVED IT! Adam has been on a costume roll wearing SUPER TIGHT sexy tops with plunging necklines and see-through fabrications, and I am a big fan! A) Adam is like FAT FREE and lean as a toothpick so...he can do it! And B) It's refreshing to see something that is fun, flashy and NOT an all black boring look straight out of a department store. I really like the faux leather panels and the rhinestones accenting the top. Throw in that center front zipper and sheer stretch chiffon and Adam is ready to hit the dance floor! All that's missing is a FAB disco ball.

Free Skate to Arrival of the Birds ("Crimson Wing" soundtrack) by The Cinematic Orchestra

O by Coldplay--This is the same program music from last season but Thank Goodness, it was a different costume. Not that I didn't like last season's costume but THIS WAS GORGEOUS! The look--designed by Veretto Sport and designer Braden Overett--included blue skin tight pants and a second-skin sequined top. That top was OUTSTANDING--like Figure Skating Haute Couture! There were hints of the sky and bird's wings (to go along with the music) but not so overtly like last season's feathered costume.

In case you are wondering, this is what he wore last season to the same program/music:

2. Classic Teen Style – Hoodie matched with slim fit jeans and a pair of vans sneakers.

3.  The Plaid Approach – Everyone loves to wear plaid and flannel.

 4. Tank Man – Teens find wearing tanks hot. If you have the body better show it off.

5.Sporty Dude – teens wearing that all sporty brands like nike or adidas.

6. Semi Formals – Suit with a sporty touch

3 WAYS, 3 DAYS

A blazer is a great fill-in for any occasion and every man has at least one in his wardrobe. They are perfect for situations in which a suit is too formal and you want to have a little sprinkling of your personality and individuality.

You all know how much I adore colours and fortunately this James Harper blazer has arrived just in time for Spring/Summer with its vibrant colour. The blazer is the perfect transitional wardrobe piece moving seasons from Winter to Spring. It is time to hang up those winter coats, wave goodbye to winter and don a blazer in a bright colour. This colour is sure to catch more than a few eyes on the streets, and it’s flattering shape works with just about anything I can throw at it.

I am super excited about this colourful blazer, and it’s refreshing style that within 3 days, I wore it 3 different ways! It is perfect for summer with its slim lapel, double vents and the spot print lining is super fun when unbuttoned. Men like to purchase pieces that ensure versatility and value for money and this blazer works just as well outside the office as it does inside.

Day 1 – Blazer and Jeans

This great blazer and a humble pair of jeans created a great combination. The cut of the bright coloured blazer paired with the casual style of jeans created a sharp and chic yet relaxed vibe. Obviously the simplest of my 3 days, 3 ways, this look is totally easy for any man to achieve. By pairing the blazer with a plain shirt you will make the look more casual (remember to unbutton your top button) and your trusty white canvas kicks will make this a failsafe style that you can repeatedly rely on. If you don’t feel like being neither casual or dressy but quite neutral , opt for a polo shirt. It is another failsafe item that every gent has in their wardrobe. The great thing about this look is it is so versatile and can take you from afternoon meetings to drinks and spontaneous dancing with friends. Throw on this blazer during the day and it will keep you looking sharp through to when happy hour starts and beyond.

Day 2- Blazer Short Combo

On day 2 the sun begun to poke out of the clouds and I paired the blazer with a pair of shorts, also by James Harper, a white tee and some simple white canvas shoes, perfect look for sunnie afternoons.I opted to have the koi fish embroidery added to the jacket to customise it and make it a little special. The embroidery pattern is custom made (lovely touch) and hand stitched to the blazer. Embroidery has popped up everywhere thanks to the big fashion houses embracing embellishments and embroidery. I adore it’s unique eclectic vibe and it is wonderful to see menswear is getting in on the trend. Obviously you do not need to opt for the embroidery and the great thing is if you do, you can always remove it so you will have the blazer for seasons to come.

Day 3- Blazer for work
By day 3 I was totally mad for this blazer! The great thing about a statement blazer is you really do not need to buy a whole new wardrobe to match it. Dress to impress at the office by combining the blazer with pieces in your existing corporate wardrobe. You will be surprised how this great colour matches what you gents would already have in your wardrobe, such as navy’s and grey. The trick is to make a statement without being too over-the-top and keeping your ensemble work-friendly. When in doubt start with a light or dark base and work from there to create outfit harmony. To create a polished look for work I combined the blazer with a plain shirt with minimal details and pair of suit pants, topping it off with a pocket square. The pocket square helps break up the solidity of the blazer. If you do not know how to wear a pocket square, please revert to WHAT’S IN YOUR POCKET.

Stand out in the crowd by styling the blazer with a pair of shorts, a navy shirt and some white kicks. Totally on-point for afternoons out with friends. You could always combine them with some brown suede shoes that would convert this to a classic look for a more formal occasion, such as the polo, or nine-to-five.

My friends at James Harper have kindly offered you 10% off at their online store by using the code GFASH10.

Whether you need a blazer for work or just a fancy occasion, I hope I have inspired you to think outside the grey, navy or black box.

Basic Fashion For Teenage Guys - Tips For Boys Only.

One of the most important things for teenage boys is to feel at ease with themselves. As a teen, you want to be yourself and fit in with everyone else. Self-expression and acceptance are crucial things for teen guys and style has a lot to do with it.

Your appearance is a big part of who you are and looking on the outside as you feel on the inside is something that, especially during your teen years, can be hard to achieve. Teenage boys are faced with many aspects of style which they don’t know how to handle. Because your body is changing so rapidly, and often not evenly, it might be hard to find the right clothes to wear and your apparel might sometimes make you feel bad or embarrassed. Moreover, boys tend to get frustrated by the fact that other boys look so different from them, even though they are the same age. This is why it is important to learn how to make the best of your body and body type.

Don’t forget, you can always change your body, working out can make you lose weight if this is what you wish or it can build muscle, but, often, these things take time. It is always crucial to make the best of what you have now, as this will give you the confidence and power to work towards achieving your goals.

Here are some style tips that can be applied at any age and regardless of your style and taste in clothes.

Have something for every setting
Teen boyA teen must have clothes that are suited for any setting. Since you are probably spending most of your time in school, at arts or sports classes and hanging out at the mall or studying, you probably don’t need as many business clothes as an older man. However, it is recommend to have at least one go-to suit.

Here is an example of a versatile, basic wardrobe:

1. Jeans

2. Khakis, chinos, etc.

3. Shirts

4. T-shirts

5. Vests

6. Jackets

7. Jumpers

8. Long sleeve shirt

9. Socks

10. Underwear

11. Dress shoes

12. Casual shoes

13. Sneakers

14. A suit

15. Accessories (watches, ties, bow ties)

Wear fitting clothes
Teen boy styleWearing clothes that fit is probably the single most important fashion advice you will ever receive. Regardless of your size or body type (which, if you are a teen might still change), wearing clothes that fit is the one thing that will make you look best.

But what does it mean to wear clothes that fit? Basically, it means that the clothes you wear should fit your size, they should not be smaller or bigger.

A small guy who wears clothes that are too big for his size will look as if he is drowning in his clothes. If you are a small guy, and want to appear bigger by wearing smaller clothes, that won’t work either: you will look even smaller and strangled by your clothes. On the other hand, if you are a bigger guy, wearing clothes that are bigger than your size will make you look even bigger and wearing clothes that are too tight will make you look as if you are hurt by your clothes.

How to tell if something fits
Teen guyIt might take a while until you get the hang of how clothes work, but until then, there are a few things you can check to make sure your clothes fit. First of all, if you are buying a shirt, a jacket or any other kind of top piece (sweaters, t-shirts, etc.), you should check the shoulders: the sewing line that connects the shoulder line to the sleeve should match your natural shoulder line.

Also, when you are buying pants, make sure that they start at your waist, not at your belly button and not lower. Moreover, you should check the bottom part of your pants. If, while wearing them, they have more than one fold, they are too big.

Generally speaking, clothes that fit have three characteristics:

1. They touch your body without squeezing it

2. They are comfortable

3. They make you look good

Also, it is recommended to always wear good underwear. Don’t wear any underwear that is too tight: it might cause rashes; it can harm your privates and feel uncomfortable. Don’t wear underwear that is too loose either: as a teenage guy, you probably have many unexpected erections, which you don’t necessarily want to share with the world.

Tailor your clothes
This all sounds good in theory, but, as a teen, you will find that at often times, the clothes you find on a store shelf don’t necessarily fit your body. The reason for this is because each guy is growing differently, and therefore, at most times, if a jacket fits in the shoulders, it won’t fit in the arms’ length and so on.

This is where the magic of tailoring comes in. A good tailor can do wonders for your looks. The sooner you will realize this, the better it will be!

The trick is, however, to know how to buy clothes that you will be able to tailor. For example, when you are shopping for a blazer or a jacket, you should make sure that it fits in the shoulders. A tailor can adjust pretty much anything about the fit of a jacket, but they can’t change the shoulders.

Moreover, it is recommended to buy clothes that are slightly larger, if you wish to have them tailored. If a piece is too small, it will be hard and costly to add fabric to it to make it look good.

Some clothes however, don’t necessarily need tailoring. For example, before considering tailoring your jeans, you should wash them twice. The reason for this is because jeans will always shrink in length when washed. This is why you should always buy jeans that a little longer than you’d need them. Also, when you are in doubt about which pair of jeans to buy and have to choose between two sizes that both seem to fit, always choose the smaller size, as jeans stretch with wear. Also, as a style tip, dark-wash jeans look dressier, are more versatile and are better at hiding dirt, which, let’s face it, as a teen, you might get on your pants.

Get a hairstyle
Teen guysWhen it comes to your haircut, it is important to find a haircut that fits your features and traits. However, if you are not a guy to invest a lot of time in doing your hair and maintaining it, you should be advised that a buzz cut is better than an unmaintained hairdo.

Care for grooming
When you are a teenager, you might be faced with a number of grooming-related issues you don’t know what to do about.

Here are a few tips:
1. To make sure your skin is always clean; exfoliate a few times each week. It is not recommended to exfoliate more than three times each week.

2. If you start shaving, you might experience rashes afterwards. For some guys, this is a temporary thing, while others simply have a more sensitive skin. There is nothing wrong with that. Either way, you can use a good after-shave lotion for sensitive skin to reduce the rashes.

3. Make sure you always use a good deodorant. Moreover, if you have sweaty feet, pour two or three tablespoons of baking soda in your sneakers in the evening and tilt the shoe to distribute the soda evenly. The baking soda will absorb perspiration and odor. Make sure you take the soda out before putting your shoes back on. This way, your sneakers will be clean and neat all the time.

To conclude, we can say that, regardless of your style, wearing fitting clothes and keeping it clean will make you look polished and clean. This will result in people taking you more seriously and in you feeling more confident about who you are and about everything you do.

Men's Fashion Tips For Body Types - 15 Rules.

Here are 15 Quick Fashion tips:

1. Fit is King
The most dramatic improvement you can make in your style is to make sure everything fits impeccably. Most guys wear clothes that are too large. Make sure everything you wear is almost hugging the shape of your body – without being tight. Bad fit is an epidemic. We call it “Bad Fit Disease”.

2. Keep it simple
You want a wardrobe that looks great on you, but don’t overdo it. Don’t wear more than three pieces of jewelry or more than three colors. Don’t dress like a rock star unless you’re in a band. If you want to be flashy, a simpler but stylish look would be sporting a black striped dress shirt with a white blazer, a dark pair of jeans, a dressy belt, and your sharpest dress shoes. You could also add a flashy watch or a simple accessory like an interesting necklace, but nothing more. Check out out our article on basics to refresh yourself on what are essential wardrobe items.

3. Change the way you see casual C
asual doesn’t have to be boring. Have fun with collared shirts, or take some inspiration from those who approach casual a bit differently.

4. Pay attention to your supporting pieces
Some sweaters are lean and others are big and chunky. The first rule of thumb is that your top and bottom halves need to match. If you’re wearing a big, chunky, rugged fisherman knit sweater, your bottom needs to be rugged, too. Don’t wear a fisherman’s sweater with a beautiful silk-and-wool suit pant. Instead, wear it with something as casual as cargos or jeans, or dress it up with a Harris tweed blazer.

5. Never go shopping alone
Most of the time, it’s tough to trust the sales people because they usually work for commission. Shop with a friend who will give you their honest opinion. Also, read about shopping on a budget.

6. Stay a notch above
Don’t overdo it to a fault, but dare to take some risks. It’s always better to be a little bit overdressed than underdressed in any setting. All you have to do is think about where and who you’re going to be with and just step it up one notch. But make sure you’re not better dressed than someone who is more important in a certain setting, like your boss. 7. Never underestimate the power of details – The last thing on is usually the first thing noticed. So mind the details instead of throwing together the main parts of your outfit. “Details” can include a scarf, a subtle pocket square, or the way you tie your tie knot.

8. Invest in a superb pair of shoes
If it’s one thing that women will notice, it’s your shoes. Especially how clean and sharp they look. It’s easy to wash and press the rest of your clothes to keep them looking new, but most guys disregard their shoes. Show that you’re a man of taste by getting a great pair of shoes and keeping them in pristine condition.

9. Fashion Tees with logos
When you’re going around with a big logo on your shirt, you risk looking like a walking billboard. Lose the lame Coca-Cola shirt and go for a classic v-neck tee or something artsy (check out threadless.com).

10. Disregard trends
Beware of buying something just because it’s “in” right now – stick to what you truly like. A lot of people rush to get in on the latest trend and end up with a bunch of clothes they don’t wear. It’s better to learn to build a versatile and timeless wardrobe first – then bring in your own twists with some of the new fashion. This one tip will save you so much money! Read up on our compiled list of 40 Common Men’s Fashion Mistakes for extra info.

11. Don’t be a sucker for brand names
Don’t be a Patrick Bateman. Before you decide to purchase an item, ask yourself if you are buying it simply because of the brand name or because you love the quality and style. Ask yourself,  “Would I buy this if there was no logo on it?” Check out our article on how to look designer for less.

12. Continually cultivate your image
Invest more time and money into your image. Cultivate your fashion sense. Your style is a huge mode of communication, and is worth caring for as much as your education, career, and relationships. Sign up for our free crash course on knowing your own style. Oscar Schoffler, longtime fashion editor of Esquire once said, “Never underestimate the power of what you wear. After all, there’s just a small bit of yourself sticking out at the collar and cuff. The rest of the world sees what you drape on your frame.”

13. Ask for real feedback
Most of your friends and family aren’t going to go out of their way to tell you what looks bad. You have to ask for it. In fact, ask anyone and everyone you trust to tell you the truth. Ask your hairstylist, ask your best friend, ask your mother!

14. Upgrade your shave
Even if your fashion is golden, an unkempt beard can be an attraction killer. Achieve a perfect shave by trying a shave brush & old-fashioned double-edged razor.

15. Experiment with style
The only way you’ll really learn, is if you go out there and try new things. I make an effort to try something completely out of my comfort zone whenever I’m at a store – many times you’ll end up loving something you never thought you would. If you make mistakes, life goes on. So many guys are afraid to express themselves through their style, don’t be one of them. Check out our article on how to put an outfit together.
