RUNWAY REPORT.....Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week GUO PEI Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016: Pics + Video

Guo Pei Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016

WHAT: Guo Pei Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016. Guo Pei, the Chinese fashion designer known for her very elaborate and intricate designs showed at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week for the very first time...

Guo Pei Couture gold ball gown--Metropolitan Museum of Art's "China: Through the Looking Glass" Exhibition

We all know Pei also from the gold colored sequined and fur Empress Coat Rihanna wore to the Met Ball last year--as well as the China: Through the Looking Glass Exhibition where several of her unbelievable couture designs were featured. Guo Pei was invited to show at this week's Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week (wonder how much that cost?), and her collection highlighted her atelier's incredible workmanship. There were many references to her native land but it was less Guo Pei Grand and more "wearable"...or as wearable as Guo Pei's designs can be. Lots of cocktail dresses and even some pants ensembles and surprisingly, not so many grand museum-worthy gowns. Some of the designs verged on a bit too late 80's/early 90's but overall, this was a nice showing for Pei. It will be interesting if those actual Haute Couture customers (many of them China's new billionaires) will order.

TRENDS: Strapless cocktail dresses; yoke details; flap front details; flared ball skirts.

COLORS: Golden canary yellow, pale blue, dusty rose

Spring 2016 Couture: Atelier Versace

Atelier Versace spring 2016 couture
Paris has finally opened its doors to couture!
Last night the iconic Donatella Versace kicked off couture week with a star studded runway show: Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Lara Stone, Mariacarla Boscono, Natasha Poly, Irina Shayk, Joan Smalls and Behati Prinsloo brought their top model’s allure to Atelier Versace spring 2016 couture collection.
As you all know, Versace is never about dreamy princesses, but fierce and sexy women who spark confidence 24/7: and I guess that confidence is what you need to rock this collection.
All the classic old school Versace’s leitmotiv were there: from the cut out to the sheer panels, not forgetting the fitted mini-dresses or the body-con gowns.
However what surprised the audience was the injection of athleticism that most of the pieces evoked: indeed Yasmine Wijnaldum opened the show wearing an optic white bomber and skinny pants, introducing us to a series of mostly white sporty yet modern looks with neon accents in yellow and orange. Definitely a reminder of the successful urban glam direction showcased with the previous ready to wear collection.
Donatella experimented with geometries both in shapes and graphic, and she spiced up many tuxedos, suits and dresses by adding provocative cut outs (of course) and Swarovski ropes, the real signature of this collection.

TEB’s review:
Overall we loved many things…but not enough to call this collection a masterpiece.
To be honest we were more fascinated by Versace’s new direction in ready to wear fashion than couture, and not because Donatella cannot give us couture. Aside those beautiful sportswear-inspired pieces and those sheer gowns bejewelled by crystals, the rest of the collection looked a little bit forced.
The rope detailing looked so prominent on few outfits, that it made us question ourselves about the wearability: some dresses would definitely not work in real life, and since we are talking about couture, they would not work on the red carpet.
Too harsh? Well, then take a look at Rita Ora, who was sitting front row wearing one of the couture creations showcased on the runway…

RUNWAY REPORT.....Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week ELIE SAAB Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016: Pics + Video!

Sari Queen: Elie Saab Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016

WHAT: Elie Saab Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016. "A Trip to India"...through the eyes of a turn-of-the-last-century Englishwoman. This is how Lebanese designer Elie Saab described his muse for this most recent Haute Couture collection. There were obvious nods to Edwardian shapes (the high necked lace blouses) as well as India (the draped Sari-like details). The collection looked very "young" and very Valentino-esque. For starters, the accessories like sequined caps and lace-up boots, as well as sport-like leather sandals all screamed "I'm going for a younger very, very, very rich trust-funder debutante". And in addition, the nymph-like shapes, head-crowns and diaphanous dresses were a little too reminiscent of the designs seen from the House of Valentino's Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. It was all beautiful but seemed a bit too much like someone else's designs.

TRENDS: Plunging necklines; sequined lace mini dresses; flared dresses; lace-up boots; head-crowns; embroidered lace;

COLORS: Silver, gunmetal gray, blush, light lilac, indigo blue.

RUNWAY REPORT.....Paris Fashion Week: Saint Laurent Fall/Winter 2016 Photos + Full Runway Video!

Helmut Newton Haute: Saint Laurent Fall/Winter 2016

WHAT: Saint Laurent RTW Fall/Winter 2016 by Hedi Slimane. This was a momentous collection in terms of the Fashion World. For several reasons: There are rumors that this might be Slimane's farewell collection and if so, it was a very OVERT homage to THE GENIUS of Yves Saint Laurent. I'm not so sure that he might be on the way out but possibly, Slimane might be getting a new title as head of Saint Laurent Couture, if this RTW Fall/Winter 2016 collection is an indication. It was impeccably made and with the most exquisite of fabrics, including the finest of leathers draped and ruffled in a way only the Master's atelier would have been able to do it. Dresses that looked from photos as if to be of printed fabrics, turned out to be (after closer inspection) hand-sewn sequined masterpieces...

Inspirations, perhaps?--Yves Saint Laurent Haute Couture designs, 1970's-1980's

Oh, and yes, then there was the Homage to YSL: There was Le Tuxedo, Le Pouf; One Shoulder Divas; The UBER 1940's Fur Coats (referencing YSL's scandalous Fall/Winter 1971 Haute Couture Collection). About the collection, some--including WWD--thought it was more of a parody, they said "How 'bout Eighties camp couture?". Yeah, they did. But I thought it was FABULOUS. I LOVED it. I say BRING ON the YSL Eighties camp couture, thank you very much. I also LOVED that the show was done a la Couture old school: No music and instead, just a voice reading off the numbers of each look..."Numero Un".

Shoulder Divas: Saint Laurent Fall/Winter 2016

I am sure that this is a very limited clientele...say, the MTV Fashion Divas such as Lady Gaga, Sia, etc. but I have a feeling this is all a precursor for an upcoming Saint Laurent Couture collection headed by, you guessed it, Hedi Slimane. Yves Saint Laurent Director of the Archives, Monsieur Pierre Berge was sitting in the front row, along with Catherine Deneuve and Betty Catroux. And they all clapped after seeing that final bright red heart-shaped fur coat. If those Haute Couture emperors (and empresses) of style liked it, then I think it was all very Tres Bien!
