Sari Queen: Elie Saab Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016

WHAT: Elie Saab Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016. "A Trip to India"...through the eyes of a turn-of-the-last-century Englishwoman. This is how Lebanese designer Elie Saab described his muse for this most recent Haute Couture collection. There were obvious nods to Edwardian shapes (the high necked lace blouses) as well as India (the draped Sari-like details). The collection looked very "young" and very Valentino-esque. For starters, the accessories like sequined caps and lace-up boots, as well as sport-like leather sandals all screamed "I'm going for a younger very, very, very rich trust-funder debutante". And in addition, the nymph-like shapes, head-crowns and diaphanous dresses were a little too reminiscent of the designs seen from the House of Valentino's Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. It was all beautiful but seemed a bit too much like someone else's designs.

TRENDS: Plunging necklines; sequined lace mini dresses; flared dresses; lace-up boots; head-crowns; embroidered lace;

COLORS: Silver, gunmetal gray, blush, light lilac, indigo blue.

stars; and pictures of all kinds of handmade, homemade souvenir embroideries.
This summer, the designers have moved on from exploring Sicilian history to
seeing Italy’s glories through the eyes of the foreign tourists who began to
flood into the country after World War II. There, visitors found little shops
selling embroidered circle skirts and sundresses, printed scarves, sandals,
straw hats—things that Italian women had been making at home to cheer
themselves up in times of austerity"

Nymph Couture: Valentino Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016

WHAT: Valentino Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016. Valentino designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli used nymphs, Isadora Duncan, expressionist dancing, early 20th century Venetian-pagan romanticism as muses and themes for this very beautiful collection. The collection featured hand-done devore velvet appliques, delicate gold leaf embroidery, silk gauze and many looks reminiscent of a Couture Turandot opera--or a very Haute expressionist dance party!

TRENDS: Loose, off-the-body dresses; caftans; boatnecks, high necks; Nymph Chic;

COLORS: Emerald green, mossy green, tomato red, gray, muted lilac, absinthe yellow, deep burgundy.
