SAG AWARDS 2016: The Red Carpet

The SAG Awards are the second key moment of this awards season, and style-wise a warm-up between the Globes and the Oscars. As the winners of the night rehearse their speeches for their big time at the Oscars, let's have a look at the best (and worst) fashion moments of the night:

STAR OF THE SHOW
Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl/Ex-Machina) in Louis Vuitton
Bow down to the most beautiful Louis Vuitton dress I have ever seen on a red carpet: simple in the design and dazzling in the details. Swedish actress Alicia Vikander definitely looked like the star she will become. Best look of the night.

BREATH-TAKING
Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder) in Zac Posen_Brie Larson (Room) in Atelier Versace Couture
As I always say, "you can never go wrong with a Zac Posen's design" and Viola Devis is another proof of that: the color of the dress is amazing on her skin, the feminine shape on the gown enhanced her figure and that smile..well that was the cherry on top! Actress of the year Brie Larson got the couture treatment directly from Atelier Versace, as she wore a couture piece straight from the house's spring 2016 couture collection. The dress proved to have "red carpet" potential on the runway, and I am glad to see how beautiful it looks on Brie. My only side note has to be the shoes: WTF???

SISTERLY LOVE
Kate Mara in Valentino_Rooney Mara in Valentino
The Mara sisters had a Valentino moment on the red carpet. Kate Mara wore a piece from the spring summer 2016 collection, while Rooney Mara opted for a couture piece from the fall winter collection. Same designer, different interpretations: I have to say that Rooney looked regal (even if I wanted to see some major jewellery piece with that gown), while Kate definitely brought some sensuality to her dress.

SHOCKING PINK
Emilia Clarke (Game Of Thrones) in Dior_Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) in Vera Wang
Only the brave. Emilia Clarke wore the second decent Dior design of this year awards season, while Sofia Vergara (as always) favored a mermaid-like dress: the designs were not original, but the color sealed the deal.

THE MICHAEL'S ANGELS
Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) in Michael Kors_Queen Latifah (Bessie) in Michael Costello
Ok, let's forget the bad title-joke. But I have to admit that Michael Kors and Michael Costello gifted Saoirse Ronan and Queen Latifah with two beautiful elegant and timeless dresses. In both cases the styling was kept to the minimum, I could not agree more.

EYE-CATCHING TOPS
Sarah Paulson (ASH: Hotel) in Armani Privé couture_Kristen Wiig (The Martian) in Roland Mouret
Couture make over also for Sarah Paulson, who turned to Armani to find the perfect dress for the evening. Usually I am not a fan of her on the red carpet, but this time I love the injection of color. Kristen Wiig brought back my love for jumpsuits, wearing a modern number for Roland Mouret. I would wear it in a heart-beat.

YOUNG HOLLYWOOD
Maise Williams (Game Of Thrones) in Ermanno Scervino_Sophie Turner (Game Of Thrones) in Carolina Herrera
This time I am not really impressed by the fashion choices of the two British stars: they looked ready for prom rather than for the red carpet. Maisie Williams wore an Ermanno Scervino's dress, that in my opinion looked too heavy for her petit frame; Sophie Turner was lovely in Carolina Herrera, but she was not memorable. I am a "dress to impress" kind of person, so this is miss for me.

Ariel Winter (Modern Family) in Romona Keveza_Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men) in Erdem_Sarah Hyland (Modern Family) in J Mendel
Keeping up with the young hollywood section we have Ariel Winter in a bombshell attire by Romona Keveza, Kiernan Shipka in a youthful and elegant Erdem design, and Sarah Hyland in a blue J Mendel. Kiernan looked the best, as it was easy to find some flaws in both Ariel and Sarah's styling choises: Ariel's frosty rose lipstick and Sarah's poor hair style were definitely a total let down.

SPARKLING COUTURE
Julianne Moore in Givenchy Couture_Nicole Kidman in Gucci
This is a hard one: two Hollywood royalties wearing the designs from two major fashion houses...and the result is not that good. Julianne Moore's lime green Givenchy dress was doing nothing for her body; however the color was beautiful on her. As for Nicole Kidman...well, that Gucci number was simply not made for her. Let's start by saying that this is a tricky dress: I could see a younger celebrity rocking it and I can imagine a model wearing it for an editorial, but in my opinion this gown has no red carpet potential, and Nicole dear, that styling is not helping either.

CLASSIC ALLURE
Anna Faris (Mom) in Naeem Khan_Rachel McAdams (Spotlight) in Elie Saab_Marisa Tomei (Empire) in Zuhair Murad couture
I see 3 beautiful dresses that needed a bit more of drama in the styling.
A red pout for Anna Faris and that gorgeous red Naeem Khan gown; a sleek hairstyle and a darker eyeshadow to upgrade Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab. Marisa Tomei disappointed me in the shoe-department and she definitely needed to pay more attention to her hairstyle, if she wanted to match that lovely teal Zuhair Murad.

NOT CONVINCING
Priyanka Chopra (Quantico) in Monique Lhuillier_Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) in Prabal Gurung_Eva Longoria (Telenovela) in Julien MacDonald
What do we have here? A bridal gown, a terrible pose and a hot mess. Wow, three beautiful ladies that did not manage to stand out in the crowd: Priyanka Chopra's Monique Lhuillier was a camouflage bridal gown; Laverne Cox was actually wearing a nice Prabal Gurung, but she killed off all the magic with that questionable pose; Eva Longoria  basically wore a dress that was meant for a taller person, and despite the fitting it is still very clear. BTW that hair style is a NO.

TOO MUCH FABRIC
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) in Christian Siriano_Sola Bamis (Mad Men) in Lola Wusu
Usually I appreciate a bit of drama on the red carpet, but not in this case. One of the basic rules in fashion is to make sure that your client looks smoking hot in your design, and I dare you all to say that Christian Siriano or Lola Wusu accomplished that request. Sola Bamis should fire her stylist, while Christina Hendricks could have upgraded her dress with a pair of scissors: that piece of fabric on the shoulder was pointless. Chop it off next time!

SKIN SKIN SKIN
Susan Sarandon in Max Mara_Eva Amurri in Gabriela Cadena_Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory) in Romona Keveza
Where should I begin? Susan Sarandon should have worn a white corset under that Max Mara tuxedo, and those pants needed to reach the floor. I do not have much to say about the Gabriela Cadena dress that Eva Amurri wore, if not "burn it". Kaley Cuoco dress could have been a good choice for the Grammys, but that sheer panel that does not match her skin-tone is a let down. Next.

Royal Fashion Minute: The Jubilee Thanksgiving Mass--Who Is The Best Dressed: Camilla, Kate, Princess Michael of Kent?

Battle of the British Royal Fashion Divas:

Who's The Biggest Fashionista: Camilla Duchess of Cornwall (foreground, left), and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge, Diamond Jubilee Thanksgiving Mass

The Finale of Britain's Diamond Jubilee celebrating the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen's ascension to the throne, occurred on Tuesday with a Thanksgiving Service at St. Paul's Cathedral, then a wondrous carriage procession through London...

H. M. The Queen Queen Elizabeth II: Sporting a smile, a slight wave, and an Angela Kelly-designed mint coat and Swarovski crystal embellished hat

The UK Royal A-List: (Left to right) Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, prince Charles, H. M. The Queen, Prince William, Catherine Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry

And the de rigueur Balcony Appearance at Buckingham Palace--where H. M. The Queen, Prince Charles and Camilla as well as Prince William, his wife, Catherine Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Henry (the spare) took part. This balcony appearance culminated in the spectacular Red Arrow's Formation Flyover:

Here in the US, BBC America began showing the entire day LIVE at 4 am--needless to say, I DVR'ed it and watched it later--at a more "civilized" hour, thank you very much. Thank goodness for BBC and the fact I get it as part of my cable channels. Now, let's get to the FASHIONS, since of course, that's what I am interested in. Who was the Biggest Fashion Diva, you may ask? Well, I'll let you be the judge...

Let's begin with H. M. The Queen, Elizabeth II:

Queen Elizabeth arrived at St. Paul's--with her Lady in Waiting, Diana Marion Lady Farnham, as her traveling companion, since her husband, Prince Phillip was in a hospital due to a bladder infection. Lady Farnham (in royal blue next to the Queen in above photo) is her Lady of the Bedchamber, which means she is the person holding the position as THE PERSONAL ATTENDANT to Her Majesty. She is the widow of the 12th Baron Farnham. Imagine having your life devoted to H. M. The Queen. Your ENTIRE LIFE! I wonder if she has a special cell phone to answer her calls when she needs her. And most important: who is paying her? The Queen? The taxpayers? England? Who? Is she part of H. M. The Queen's "staff"? Please tell me she gets a monthly paycheck for this???!!! Well, irregardless, she was there as a Comfort Stand-In on the ride to St. Paul's Cathedral Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday and I would like to think that they are actually friends and it was comforting to the Queen. Now, back to Her Majesty:

Queen Elizabeth wore a mint green princess seamed coat and dress ensemble by her favorite designer, Angela Kelly. It was embellished with silver thread, Swarovski crystals throughout and had an attached mint silk chiffon sash. She may not be up to date in terms of 21st Century Style, but as an 86 year old woman, she was "Giving Fashion"...maybe not Barbara Walters Oscar de la Renta/Carolina Herrera Ladies-Who-Lunch style, but Fashion for her!

Besides that hat with all those crystals, her most prominent accessory was that GORGEOUS--and HUGE--diamond brooch. It is named the "Cullinan III and IV Brooch" and it is made from two of the nine Cullinan diamonds, weighing 94.4 carats and 63.3 carats. In case you did not know, the Cullinan Diamond originally weighed 3,106 carats and it was first discovered in 1905 at a mine near Pretoria in South Africa. The story goes, that originally, it was thrown away (Mon Dieu!) as it was thought too big to be an actual diamond. Once recovered, it was presented to King Edward VII and cuts were used in the Crown Jewels, therefore this amazing brooch.

Queen Elizabeth II's Grandmother, Queen Mary (in photo above) can be seen wearing the diamonds as a brooch--the same brooch H. M. The Queen wore on Tuesday. I love that the Queen "served up" a MAJAH diamond for the Diamond Jubilee! If ever there was a time to break out this gem, it is NOW!

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall:

Printed Diva: Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall and wife to Prince Charles, future King of England, decided to go a bit "Directional" with a champagne and gold colored coat with a "basket-weave" print and dress from one of her favorite designers, Bruce Oldfield. The hat was Philip Treacy, naturally.

I was surprised to see her in such a bold printed ensemble, but at the same time, I realized, that she was making quite a statement and knew that this was an important moment for her and well, this was no time to be a Fashion Wallflower. PS: She rode next to Her Majesty in the carriage procession. Mon Dieu Part Deux!

Now, onto her Fashion Competitor of the Day, Catherine Duchess of Cambridge:

Catherine wore a design from Sarah Burton and the House of Alexander McQueen. It was a blush-colored lace applique fitted knee-length sheath dress design with a high bateau neck, very fitted sleeves and champagne/beige satin waistband.

Her chapeau was by Jane Taylor. The dress fit her ever-so-perfectly and accentuated her I-Do-Not-Eat-Tea Sandwiches figure. She looked "Church" appropriate and well, still gave the Fashionistas out there something to talk about.

The Princesses:

Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice of York: The two lovely daughters of Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah Duchess of York. Side Note: poor Sarah, by the way, she was not invited--since she is persona non grata--to any of these festivities; I really, really hope she was in a beach in Mykonos having her own Diamond Jubilee Festivities with a bunch of her best Gays! Anyhow...moving on. The two Princesses were in contrasting colored ensembles for the Jubilee Thanksgiving Mass: Princess Eugenie wore a lovely purple
dress by Suzannah. The bag was by Loro Piano. Her mushroom-colored
stilettos were also by Kurt Geiger.
Princess Beatrice wore a periwinkle blue Kinder Aggugini coat dress with tan colored Kurt Geiger stilettos. Her bag was designed by Lemeresca.

Blue Blood: Sophie Countess of Wessex--wife of Prince Edward Earl of Wessex wore a navy silk ziberline suit with lace applique and gathered princess seamed peplum detail. The Princess Royal, Princess Anne (right) attended in a jeweled blue applique' coat and dress ensemble with popped collar, long fitted sleeves, nude heels, gloves and clutch; quite feminine for her, since well, she's usually looking rather--how shall I say this--BUTCH!

The Real Fashion Diva: But here's my Favorite Royal of the entire Diamond Jubilee Thanksgiving Service--Princess Michael of Kent. German/Czech Republic-born Baroness Marie Christine Anna Agnes Hedwig Ida von Reibnitz, Princess Michael of Kent attended the Diamond Jubilee Thanksgiving Services wearing this gunmetal violet silk shantung suit with notched collar, billowing iridescent silk organza sleeves and princess-seamed fitted knee-length pencil skirt with silk chiffon godet inset.

When I saw her on TV entering St. Paul's Cathedral , I thought "Who Is That Fashion Diva?" And yes, of course, it was Princess Michael of Kent. She is like Joan and Jackie Collins all wrapped up in one fabulous person. The Princess knows Fashion and knows Drama. Take a peek at her Wikipedia and you'll know what I mean. Because of this suit of hers above, I have to give it to her as the Winner of my Unofficial "Best Dressed at the Diamond Jubilee Thanksgiving Service". Catherine, take note...

Who Do You Guys Think Was The Best Dressed Royal Gal at Tuesday's Diamond Jubilee Thanksgiving Service/Festivities? Let me know...

Red Carpet Minute: CFDA Awards 2012--The Red Carpet Trends

Plunging Necklines, High-Low Hems, Color, Metallics, Caftan, The Peplum...The Trends at the CFDA's:

The 2012 CFDA/Council of Fashion Designers Awards were this past Monday June 4th. and well as you might expect it was a Red Carpet Frenzy when it came to the Fashion, Styles, Looks and Trends that celebs, models, designers and fashion glitterati were giving. Usually at such a major Fashionista event like this, one can detect some trends on the red carpet; trends that will end up "in real life"--on the street, as they say. At this 2012 CFDA Awards, a lot of the ensembles we saw came fresh off the Resort 2013--yes 2013, Collections which are just being released to the Fashion Editors. So, basically what we saw Monday night is what we'll end up seeing in the stores next year...so without further ado, here are the 2012 CFDA Awards Red Carpet Trends that you will see NEXT Spring/Summer 2013:

Plunging:

Zoe Saldana in Prabal Gurung Fall 2012: Actress Zoe Saldana--in all her teeny tiny size zero glory-- wore a black gown by Singapore-born Nepal-raised NY-based designer Prabal Gurung. She showed several trends in one dress: the plunging neckline, of course, but then there was the "midriff cut-outs" plus the solid vs. sheer. All in all, she looked Edgy-Vampira Chic.

Julianne Hough in KaufmanFranco: NYC-based design duo Ken Kaufman and Isaac Franco KaufmanFranco designs are favorites of the red carpet girls. Actress Julianne Hough wore a plunging neckline side draped gown in "Chinese red" from their Fall 2012 Collection.

Bold Contrast Color Prints:

Kate Bosworth in Joseph Altuzarra Fall 2012: Actress Kate Bosworth looked fabulous in this printed and metallic dress featuring a high cowl neckline, "cut-out" midriff, and knee-length fluttery skirt--from design darling Joseph Altuzarra. LOVE the black ankle-strapped heels and matching clutch. Joseph is originally from Paris France (his father is French-Basque and his mother is Chinese-American) but now he is based out of NY and well his muse, as of late is Miss Bosworth:

Actress and Designer: Kate Bosworth and Joseph Altuzarra

U.S. Vogue Editor Anna Wintour in Marc Jacobs Resort 2013: Here's another example of the "Contrast Trim" trend--U.S. Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour wore a modified version of a dress designer Marc Jacobs showed recently for his Marc Jacobs Resort 2013 Collection. In the Look Book (on the right photo), the dress was ankle length and more A-line shaped,. On Ms. Wintour, it was modified to be a more sheath dress shape with waist-defining belt; very Oscar de la Renta-meets-Marc Jacobs...

Caftan and Cascade:

Marchesa Co-Designer Keren Craig in Marchesa: "The Other Marchesa Designer" Keren Craig, attended the 2012 CFDA Awards looking quite "Mykonos Chic" in a coral silk caftan gown with gold shoulder and waist embellishment...and a FABULOUS tan. THIS. Will. Be. The Dress. Of Summer 2013. Trust.

Ashley Olsen in The Row Resort 2013: Deep lilac silk caftan drop shoulder, oversized cascade front ruffle--shapeless caftan dress--this is what Miss Ashley Olsen gave for Monday night's 2012 CFDA Awards Red Carpet. She was so on-trend in terms of what we'll see come NEXT YEAR! Love this dress.

Peplum:

Devon Aoki: NY-born 5' 5" tall model/actress Devon Aoki wore this strapless gown from NYC-based brand Alice + Olivia--from designer Stacey Bendet. The gown is from the Fall 2012 Alice + Olivia Collection, however, in their collection Look Book (right photo above), it was shown in green. Aoki wore a brick-red version. As you may know, it's ALL ABOUT The Peplum for Fall 2012 but this style detail will continue onto next year. And we can see just how pretty this silhouette detail can be. I showed it in my NIKOLAKI Collection last Spring 2011 so you know I love me a PEPLUM!

Halter Drape:

Erin Heatherton Michael Kors Resort 2013: Illinois-born Victoria's Secret Supermodel (and Leonardo DiCaprio's girlfriend) Erin Heatherton, wore this turquoise-blue halter liquid silk jersey dress featuring a gold/metallic neckline and plunging back. It's very easy-breezy but at the same time very elegant and chic, and leave it to 5' 11" Heatherton to make it look FABULOUS!

It's from Michael Kors Resort 2013 Collection, as seen from the designer's Look Book photo above.

 Embelished Shoulders:

Mandy Moore in Lela Rose Spring 2012: Singer/Actress Mandy Moore spotted this dress at Lela Rose's Spring 2012 Runway show, and the Texas-born designer customized it for her. On the runway (right photo above), the cream-colored dress was shown knee-length. Moore showed up to Monday night's 2012 CFDA Awards with the floor-length gown version. It's a simple gown with classic lines but what really "sells it", are those embellished cap sleeves.

Color Blocked Sportif:

Hillary Rhoda in Rebecca Minkoff: American model Hillary Rhoda arrived at the CFDA's in this navy/turquoise/ocean blue color-blocked athletic-inspired dress from San Diego-born NYC-based designer Rebecca Minkoff. Color blocking is HUGE for this Spring/Summer but will also continue on being a major trend through to next year.

High Low:

Model Joan Smalls in Michael Kors: Another big trend this Spring/Summer that we will also see next Spring/Summer is this high-low style. Girls are finally embracing this silhouette. It's flattering for tall girls and shorter girls who want to showoff your glorious legs...Speaking of legs, Model Joan Smalls looks "Demure Sexy" in this ivory high-low dress from Michael Kors. The accessories are PERFECT: love the simple gold ankle-strap heels and big gold bracelet, all finished off with a slicked-back I-just-got-off-the-Riviera hairstyle. St. Tropez Sublime.

Metallics:

Actress Lily Collins in Marchesa Fall 2012: Finally, we'll end with actress Lily Collins (yes, daughter of Phil), looking SOOOO cute in this gold high-neck, cap-sleeved fit-and-flare shaped dress from Marchesa Fall 2012. Lily is model-teeny-tiny so I wouldn't be surprised if this was the runway sample. She looked great in this dress. For those girls looking for a "new"-looking Prom Dress, this is the perfect style. Gold, silver or anything embellished will be a big trend come this Fall but it will spill over next year into Spring/Summer 2013, so ladies, keep an eye out for this Trend as well.
