HOTLINE BLING'S STYLE GAME STRONG

So, Drake has finally released the video for his summer track "Hotline Bling," and after watching of the first (of many, many!) time, the Booty Call-themed sequence did raise a few questions in my mind just like I'm sure it did with many people's... WHERE can I buy this gorgeous mock-neck gray sweater and HOW can I get my boyfriend to wear it everyday !?

Laughs.

It wouldn't be honest to say that I have been more interested and impressed by Drizzy's songwriting skills and musical intelligence (he owns both, don't get me wrong!) than by his strong style game. Let's face it, the guy can dress and good, apparently ! And, as I have recently been challenged by a friend to create actual men's Fashion content for the blog in order to widen my audience, I thought it migh be the perfect occasion to take up on that challenege and well, share a few inside tips and tricks on how to pull of Fall Fashion like you're part of the OVO dinasty…

1. Moncler's 'Maya' Lacquered Nylon Jacket

Sometimes it takes the French to take a functional garment and make it fashionable. Moncler is one such brand ! The first time Drake appears in the video he’s sporting a shiny, cherry-red Moncler 'Maya' down puffer jacket, one of the brand's famous iconic styles. Here, rich and luxurious details combine with classic styling to make for an unmistakable jacket. Moncler jackets are now an iconic part of the European Winter sports scene and the now Italian own brand has also introduced other cold weather essentials into its menswear collection, from handmade jumpers, to kintted scarves and hats, to wools sweaters. And while there may be many equally well-established Winter sportswear brands out there, few can match the highly stylized look and appeal of pieces like the one Drake has been seen sporting in Hotline Bling.

Here's a brief history round-up on the iconic white T-Shirt: the piece that now has become an essential feature in our wardrobes actually descends from undergarments worn by Navy men in the 1910's. Once bought in bulk from Kirkland and Ralph Lauren (my boyfriend still buys his in stacks!), it is now a fast Fashion staple and has, with time, gotten the likes of Fashion royalties such as Karl Lagerfeld, who layered it underneath a Chanel signature tweed cardigan, Kanye West, whose collaboration with A.P.C. sold-out faster than you could say 'Heartbreak', and, of course, HRH who styled his white t-shirt game a notch up playing once again, the 'Jumpman' game ;)

No, no, the Timberland-esque boots seen in Hotline Bling's first sequence aren't a rare OVO collaboration... As a matter of fact, they're the way underrated (if you ask me!) Nike ACG Manoa boots, and you can cop a pair at Footlocker for about $90. Pretty cool, huh ? Although these babes aren't looking as smooth at the classic Timberland's to my taste, the Nike ACG Manoa leather boots have proven themselves to be quite the handy pair of footwear to have on hand and can handle whatever Mother Nature has up her sleeve ;) Oh, and koodos to the sick style details these boots feature; and all leather upper and high-top silhouette for a luxe look plus, a sleek Illuminati nod on the tongue. Did you notice ?

4. All-White Nike Air Max 90 Leather

A pair of crisp white sneakers should always be part of your rotation no matter what season it is. With the sleek silhouette of the 90 and stellar performance you expect from Nike, these beauties have a modern-retro twist for neck-breaking style ! In Hotline Bling, Drake is basically teaching us how a quality running shoe from the early 90's has been adapted for casual wear and that, if you can pull off the look in a pair of runners, then consider yourself set.

Now let's move over to the pièce-de-résistance... In the third sequence of Hotline Bling, Drizzy rocks a stunner of a piece by none other than the Swedish Fashion prodigy, Acne Studios, along with a dad beard, baggy OVO sweatpants and wheat Timberland boots. For a definite hit, I would advise you to borrow that exact head to toe look although, the mock-neck jumper itself is way covetable on its own ;) Historically speaking, Drake has been a champion of sweaters, usually the dorky, oversized ones, but in his new video he actually showed himself to be very on-trend and minimalist, which I think is a vibe that suits him quite nicely ! The Jayden knit from Acne Studios is an oversized, box-cut design constructed from a thick, linear ribbed wool fabric which happens to be bang on-trend for Fall 2015.

7. Timberland Wheat 6-Inch Waterproof Boots

The sleek timelessness of Timberland boots can hardly be overstated ! While there are several ways to rock your Timb's, from tight, over-the-tongue lacing to loose, invisible knot, Drake pretty much showed off everyone how to wear and style it, and just look plain awesome. Thus, the Timberland 6" boot is practically a requirement of hip-hop style, and has been since the early 90's. They're just a great way for men to dress up, due to many reasons; they are comfortable and waterproof, the materials they're made of doesn't wear out and they're easy to care after. In short, they are practical yet, stylish, and that's something everyone pretty much agreed on right away, from NaS, to Wu-Tang Clan, to Kanye West, to the 6 God.

8. Storm Bringer Racing Leather Jacket

As for a killer finale (and as if the Acne Studios turtleneck wasn't enough!) behold, the motorcycle jacket. This one Drake wore in the vid is a really cool spin on vintage racing jackets which, although it's referencing a 70's kinda look, falls directly in the trend book for this season. Paired with a white hoodie, black jeans and a heavy black Timb's, here's a style lesson by Drizzy on how to keep things cool and chic. #boyfriendgoals

Fashion Trend For Spring Summer 2014: METALLIC

You don't have to wait for that evening party to pull out your metallics! This season, try metallics for the day too. One trend that I am falling for is wearing metallic clothing. Metallics instantly add some shine and girliness to your look. It adds a little edge to your look.
Metallic used as accessories, like shoes and bags, has been a trend that has been going on for years and will continue for this Spring/Summer 2014. For this season designers sent models down the runway looking like 70s disco dolls slash robots, draped in metallic fabrics from liquid textures to stiff structured thick ones. Here are my tips for wearing the trend:

Don’t be afraid to wear it in the day. Pair metallic with denim.

Metallic skirts look ridiculously fabulous paired with basic tops, striped tees and a simple blazer. For a night out, a metallic skirt is a great way to dress up a look. It's an elegant look is great for a night out where a formal cocktail dress isn't necessary but a slightly smarter look is needed. A metallic skirt can look great with something as simple as a basic turtleneck sweater, tights and boots.

Metallic jackets are a real statement piece. Worn night or day they can completely transform even an all black outfit into something that stands out from the crowd. It's better to keep the rest of your look subdued. The metallic trend is given a new life with amazing shades, that's why you can combine it with ripped jeans, plain white tees, pleated trousers, plain dresses and other stylish pieces and accessories.

Metallic shorts and trousers, now these are perfect for a night out, for a fun casual but kinda glamorous evening when you wanna look effortlessly super hot. Metallic pants add a bit of luxury to the everyday outfit, taking your look from ordinary to extraordinary. Make sure your metallic bottoms are not too tight. Keep it simple. Your metallic pants should be the highlight of your outfit, no need to wear items that complete with them.

Metallic Shirts are by far my favorites, in that liquid fabric with a half tuck, they’d even be office appropriate. A metallic shirt adds a bit of rock and roll bling to plain jeans. keep the bottom plain and in solid colours.

Metallic dresses Every woman should have at least one metallic dress. They are trendy and dressy which can be worn for a night out on the town, weddings, office parties and special occasions. Team with minimal accessories and the right shoe, you will sure to get heads turning.

If you don’t want to go all out, try adding metallic shoes, bags or nail varnish to liven up a simple outfit. Metallic accessories to elevate the effect of neutrals. Pair shiny gold or silver with black, whites, grey or beige and see the outfit come to life.

There's a fine line between tasteful and tacky. So when wearing a metallic, which makes such a bold impact on its own, leave the jewelry at home. Let nature do its work. When wearing shine, it's best not to compete.

How to Pack

Packing for a trip. If you are like me, this is one of the most dreaded fashion situations you can face. I’m really hoping someone will invent a way to teleport your entire closet with you wherever you go. In the meantime, here are my tips, tricks and past mistakes in hopes of helping you become a better packer!

1. Brainstorm.

On my recent trip to Europe, I spent at least two months planning my outfits in advance. That might sound excessive, but I was visiting a climate that was very different from the one I live in, wearing shoes I never wear (flats) and I also wanted to come up with cute outfits I could use as blog posts. ;-) You may not need as much planning as I did, but I still think that doing some initial brainstorming can really help with packing. Write down outfit ideas for your trip in the days and weeks leading up to your trip. Use inspiration photos and fashion blogs to get fresh new ideas.

2. Check the weather.

Leading up to your trip you’ll want to be checking the weather on a fairly regular basis. I recommend checking online, but also asking people you know that live there or have been to that region at the same time of year. I am notoriously bad at packing correctly for the weather. On my recent trip to Europe, I underestimated how hot Rome would be despite having checked the weather a gazillion times. If you are unsure of the weather or visiting multiple climates as I was, I recommend bringing an item from either end of the spectrum (both a warm coat and a pair of summery sandals, for example) *just in case.*

3. Pick your shoes first.

So… where to begin? With your shoes, of course! My #1 packing tip is to start with your shoes. These are by far the biggest and bulkiest items in your suitcase, so I always start there first. Often, I will pick either black or brown shoes and stick with that same color theme for the whole trip. Another tip: wear your bulkiest pair of shoes on the plane (both directions) to save room in your suitcase.

4. Pick your jackets next.

The weather research you do will help determine how heavy and how many jackets to bring, and I recommend picking them next since they are also one of the bulkiest items in your suitcase. Use the shoes and jackets as a guide, and then only pack the smaller items (tops, bottoms, dresses) that go with them.

5. Layer it up.

Even the best meteorologist can't detect quick weather changes, so whenever possible I suggest packing outfits that have varying “stages” like the one above, that you can be adjusted based on how cold or hot it turns out to be that day. This can also be a helpful way to pack if you are traveling from one very hot climate to a very cold climate in the same day, or if it's warm during the day and gets much colder at night. Try packing a cardigan that can go under each jacket you packed and/or a scarf or gloves that you can add to your outfits.

6. Pack full outfits.

To ensure that I don’t pack a single item I won’t use, I like to try everything on and pack full outfits, rather than bits and pieces. This method might not work for everyone, but it has been a huge space saver for me. (Bonus: if you take the time to snap a photo of each outfit, you can look back at the pictures to help you remember what's in your suitcase and choose which outfit to wear while you're on your trip!)

7. Reuse, reuse, reuse.

I try not to pack anything that I won’t wear twice, even on a short trip. Try to think of packing as a fun puzzle and challenge yourself to come up with a way to re-wear any given item more than once.

8. Evaluate.

At the end of packing, I recommend going through everything and do three things: 1. Count how many outfits you have. Make sure you haven’t packed too many outfits, or not enough. 2. Imagine as many scenarios as possible (museum, church, mountains, dinner) and make sure you have head-to-toe look for every occasion. 3. Pick which outfits you will wear on the plane in both directions.

A Packing Case Study: What I Packed for Europe

My recent trip to Europe was 16 days, 7 flights, one train ride and three countries (England, France and Italy). This is everything I wore (minus two outfits, those photos were unfortunately erased). I packed:

Three pairs of (cute) shoes.

My super-comfy flat Bakers boots that I’ve had for a year.
A new pair of Michael Kors loafers. I must’ve tried on 50 pairs of flats and these were by far the most comfy!
A new pair of boat shoes. These are a great alternative to sneakers since they have a cushy rubber bottom like sneakers but are much cuter (in my opinion).
My gym shoes. I had planned to work out at least 3 times, but only wound up wearing them once, on a run through the streets of Milan. I would consider leaving these behind next time, but then again that run was one of my favorite highlights of the trip, so it’s a tough call!

Four jackets.

Trench coat. (didn't use it, not pictured)
Wool navy coat. (worn 4 times)
Camel blazer. (worn 4 times)
Tan leather jacket. (worn 4 times)

Five bottoms.

Dark skinny jeans. (worn 2 times)

One purse.

I brought one, large purse. It was big enough to stuff full on the airplane, but then small/lightweight enough to wear cross-body style while sightseeing. It usually contained a bottle of water, snacks, maps, and the usual stuff (wallet, lip gloss, sunglasses) for sightseeing.

Tons of accessories.

The right statement necklace can dramatically change your look, but as I discovered they are also very heavy, so choose wisely when packing these. I wore my heaviest necklace (Stella & Dot Jacqueline) three times on this trip.

What I packed but didn't need:

My trench coat (planned to wear it over the pink ruffled and polka dot dresses). It was much hotter in Italy than I thought it would be and I didn't need it.
Four cardigans/sweaters that I packed "just in case." I really overdid it on this part. I'm a wuss when it comes to the cold, and overall I just really thought it would be much colder than it was in Italy and France. I wish I had done even more research on the weather beforehand to avoid this! I also wish I had considered the other end of the spectrum - a super-hot day, and packed a pair of flat sandals. These would have really come in handy in the 100-degree heat in Rome!
I packed an "alternate" outfit at the very last minute that I didn’t wind up needing. I wore the other pieces, but not the cargo pants. Those were wasted space in my luggage!

Other packing tips for Europe:

Since I was checking a bag, I felt free to stuff it full. This was a mistake. It wound up being over 50 pounds, which meant I was removing items at the airport and putting them into my purse. Which then meant I was carrying the world's heaviest purse on and off the plane. We also opted to take public transit to and from the airport most of the time, which resulted in my lugging my own 50 pound suitcase up and down stairs all over Europe. Choose wisely.
Historical places like churches will make you cover your legs and arms when you enter. Since it was 100 degrees in Italy, I wore a breezy skirt and tank top and just covered up with a scarves (see photo above) as I entered the church.
I packed my straightener, but not my hair dryer since hotels usually have those. You will need converters for anything you want to plug in (like your phone charger) so make sure to pick those up before your trip.
Don’t forget the snacks. I brought a jar of peanut butter that saved my life on a super-early flight. Nothing was open yet so that became my breakfast.

Whether you knot it, roll up the sleeves, pair it with jeans or a killer full skirt, tuck it in, or top it with a blazer or comfy sweater, here are a few stylish ways to wear a crisp white button-down this season!

Liven up your white shirt ensemble with a bold pattern or print skirt or pant. Lively prints are big on trend, so this is an easy way to work the trend. Be as daring as you like - nothing clashes with a white shirt.

White shirts were practically made for layering. Whether you style one under a jumper for colder days or use it to smarten up a strappy dress or jumpsuit, you can't go wrong.

Let your shirt do the talking by keeping it simple in a monochrome outfit. Go for black or dark navy bottoms and accessories to accompany a crisp white shirt.

Accessorised your outfit with a black bow tied at the neck of your white shirt to keep it interesting and on days when you need a bit of sass.
