Fashion tips for Christmas party season

According to the lighthearted survey by department store David Jones, 45 per cent of fashion mishaps witnessed are tacky Christmas-themed accessories or outfits, and 38 per cent involve guests ending up barefoot. David Jones womenswear buying manager Teneille Ferguson said it was important to stick to a dress code and make an effort if the occasion called for it.

“People struggling to walk in heels or, even worse, carrying them is never a good look,” she said. Flats and embellished sandals and slides are having a moment, so it’s the perfect excuse to avoid heels if they’re not going to stand the test of time at a function. “Being comfortable in what you’re wearing is always the safest bet to avoid a fashion faux pas. Avoiding gimmicky accessories is also key.” Ms Ferguson said the festive season was a great time to wear something a little different and more adventurous than your usual style called for. “For a work Christmas party, wearing something sophisticated and not baring too much skin would be advised,” she said. “For a barbecue or something more informal — a pretty floral dress with sandals would be perfect, as would an off-the-shoulder top or cami with jeans.”

Etiquette expert Anna Musson said the most common festive season faux pas include giving gag gifts, re-gifting without checking for cards, and gifts from the two-dollar shop. “Never arrive empty-handed, never let gift givers know you don’t like their gift, don’t avoid saying ‘Merry Christmas’. It is Christmas so embrace it. And the big no-no, being noticeably drunk at the office Christmas party,” she said.

Interview Marc Jacobs on psychoterapy

Marc Jacobs made his acting debut in the " Disconnect" movie.
Marc Jacobs' character in the film lures underage kids off the street with promise of income for web-chat porn and prostitution. Discussing his character in the film he told Entertainment Weekly:

“My character is Harvey and I run a house for minor [in age] Internet porn. It’s all virtual. People go online and they talk to these kids about their fantasies or whatever. I’m the sort of father of them in the house – the Fagan of all these wayward kids who come stay in this house,” Jacobs explained. “In the end, I’m really not a bad character. I’m actually the one who is protecting them in a way. I’ve taken them off the streets, and they don’t get harmed. They’re doing something that is virtual, though they are talking about sex. But you can look at it two ways. Harvey isn’t a pimp, having them meet up like street hookers or giving them drugs. He provided a home for the kids. But it is sleazy.”

Marc Jacobs on psychoterapy, internet

Between designing for three different brands, living between two countries and acting in a film, how do you disconnect?

“I’m not attached to phones or computers. I’m with my team so often that other than sending a silly text here or there, I’m not dependent on the internet. The film deals with the greater problem [concerning the internet], which is people’s inability to deal with honest feelings. The internet is one way that people’s problems manifest themselves, similar to a pint of Haagen Daaz for someone with an eating disorder or drugs for an addict. This is what comes of people not being able to honestly communicate and connect.”

What advice would you give to parents of children in the internet age?

I have no advice.
After years of psychotherapy, I’ve learned that we need to be able to express our feelings, be able to tell a parent or a friend, ‘I need your love.’ There has to be a healthier way of communicating, rather than fearing confrontation and looking for escapes.

After a lot of group therapy and psychiatry I’m learning to become fluent in expressing anger and fear. For instance, with my psychiatrist, it’s easy for me to tell him about the resentments and difficulties that I’m feeling with people, but I can’t tell the person about whom I’m feeling this way. It’s a practice, and I’ll never feel like, ‘Oh yeah, I’ve got this. I’m good.’” (For the record, Jacobs told us he does wear his own line as well as Prada and Comme des Garcons.)

What are the lessons we can take away from “Disconnect”?

“I don’t want to chat online with people I don’t know. Firstly, there’s something deeper there. Boredom? Years ago I had a MySpace account and I had all these friends I didn’t know and that fed my ego. I’d stay up until 2AM chatting with people I don’t know. Who does that benefit? Me or them?

Even today, I’ll find myself on the treadmill on the gym and people will come up to me and say, ‘Why won’t you talk to me now? You were talking to me on Facebook at 4AM.’ That’s not me, that’s Marc Jacobs the brand. People will approach me at restaurants and say, ‘We’re Facebook friends, why don’t you say hello?’ Again, that’s not me, that’s Marc Jacobs the company.

I don’t want to live virtually, locked in a room, interacting with a screen.”

Shop Your Style Crushes With ASAP54 | LFW

Getting to grips with new app ASAP54

Hey lovelies! Happy Thursday! What does today have in store for you? I've got some desk time, and a special shoot a little later, but am also TBT-ing/reminiscing over some awesome memories from London Fashion Week - including being a total techy novice with new app ASAP54

I partnered with ASAP54 for the penultimate day of LFW, and got to grips using the shopping app myself. New concepts can be tricky, so I'm going to keep things SIMPLE and explain ASAP54 as best I can, so we can all be in on the ASAP54 goodness!

So here's what you need to know . . .

ASAP54 is a new shopping app. ASAP54 helps you find clothing items, and accessories, which match a picture you upload of something you want to find.  ASAP54 uses the latest visual recognition  to filter through hundreds of products, to perfectly match your search.

The picture you chose to upload can be of a product: e.g. a friend's shoes which you'd like to buy a similar pair to. The picture could also be of something more vague: e.g. a bunch of red roses which you would like a cocktail dress in the same colour of. In a nutshell ASAP54 is a way of finding a product, to match an item or an inspirational image you have seen, which you like the look of, and would like to buy a version of yourself.

If your search results shouldn't return items you like, you can get in touch with one of ASAP54's dedicated in-house stylists who will hand select a list of five items for you, and get back to you with the list within 24 hours.

You can set preferences on everything, from colour, to price, to style. You will initially be directed to use ASAP54's filtering process to narrow down your search; e.g. Shirts & Blouses > Long Sleeve. Additionally you can swipe left to filter further using key words. e.g. Silk

For me, I used ASAP54 to find a pair of shoes in the same pink hue as my LFW organiser. See my infographic below >

As with so many things, the best way to learn is to have a go yourself! You can download ASAP54 from the App Store HERE.  OH and one of the most FUN things about ASAP54? You build your own profile, and follow people you love the style of. That way you can keep in touch with the shopping searches of your favourite stylish friends, and style crushes. You can find me on @monicabeatrice should you wish to!

I am excited to see how ASAP54 will develop as a new social platform, I've already begun to check in regularly with the people I follow. Watch this space . . .

Have an awesome day all!

Abarcas - The New Shoe Style You NEED To Know

Hey pretties!
pics from my Instagram

Top: Next // Denim Cutoffs: Similar // Abarcas: Bought in Menorca - Similar // Sunglasses: Anthropologie - Similar

Abarcas - get to know the name NOW. The perfect Summer sandal, this shoe style is the traditional ware and product of Menorca - where I first came across them. They are made using artisan methods -  including recycled tyres for the soles! - and are unisex, insanely comfortable and an awesome alternative to gladiators and flip flops.

This season I've noticed a couple of stores  picking up on the Abarcas style, including ASOS, Dune and Jeffrey Campbell. If you're travelling to Menorca or Spain buy them from the local shops - they're the best - but if not, my tip is to invest in a similar pair pronto. A slingback mule style is along the same aesthetic. Below I've rounded up my favourites available now.

Read on for shopping picks and Abarcas styling tips . . .

SHOP

Styling Notes: Abarcas are best worn with denim cutoffs, vintage or white dresses. You can buy them in all different hues but I've got my eye on a metallic pair next.

What is your favourite holiday pickup? Have you guys tried Abarcas?

Today I'm off to Ibiza - YAY - catchup with you guys on Monday! I'll be posting to Instagram the whole weekend.

Have a super few days!
