NEW YORK-Fusion of East and West in a new exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art juxtaposing influences of art, drawing and Chinese culture, from the time of Imperial China until the current period, to fashion and Western design.

With 150 suits, dresses, costumes and accessories from 40 designer, is shown with the theme of "China Through the Looking Glass," which took place from May 7 until August 16, is one of the largest exhibition ever held of the museum.

Created for more than two years, the exhibition is housed in the gallery two floors covering an area of approximately 2,800 square meters. This event takes visitors on the way how the designers of the West find inspiration in everything from China, ranging from highly detailed embroidered costumes belonging to Imperial China to the Shanghai of the 1920s, and military uniforms Cultural Revolution.

"This is a monumental and profound exploration of the effects of Chinese film art and talent to design Western fashion world," said Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of the Museum.

This exhibition takes the title of Lewis Carroll's novel, published in 1871 "Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There," about entering another world.

"As the imaginary world of Alice, China which is reflected in fashion in this exhibition fictional, stunning and ancient, offering a new reality," said curator Andrew Bolton, who added that this collective fantasy about China.

This exhibition displays a treasure of China as a dragon robe, worn by the last emperor before he ascended the throne, and painting Chinese concubines who never exhibited before.

Edward Steichen at The Photographer's Gallery

Gloria Swanson

Edward Steichen took celebrity portraits and fashion photos for Vanity Fair and American Vogue in the 1920s and 30s. There's a lovely exhibition of his work Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, the Condé Nast Years 1923-1937, I first saw it in New York and now it's on at The Photographer's Gallery.

Definitely worth a visit.

ALEXI FREEMAN

Located above a small gallery in what seems to be a dodgy neighbourhood (at least for me) in Collingwood, Alexi Freeman's studio is decked out in racks, bookshelves and a large wooden work desk in the middle holding shoes made in collaboration with Preston Zly, as well as bright, chained jewellery. The Transeasonal 2013/2014 Python collection I was invited over to view hangs off a rack against a wall full of eye-catching necklaces and earrings.

Personally, I'm not a wearer of clothes that scream "look-at-me!" but I have to admit that the neon bright shades are ideal for bringing a little joy into your wardrobe in dull weather, and even more appropriate for standing out during Spring/Summer. The Python collection is certainly for the woman who wants to stand out, but it also offers a medium for the more tame - with plain leather jackets, black python-printed shirts and monochromatic dresses - of which can still easily be paired with an item from the neon family to act as a statement.

The attention to detail throughout the collection is the main thing to take notice of - with chain-mesh details on neon fringe jackets and a well-thought out selection of diamond python print finding itself on most things. And, while I did enjoy the feel of the fine mesh incorporated into dress sleeves, one piece I actually would love to try is the neon yellow leather skirt, which I'd first sighted in the lookbook - unfortunately though my photos didn't do it justice so you can view it on the website here, along with the rest of the collection.

If this is the kind of assortment that catches your eye, and you're in Melbourne, make sure to check it out at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week in a few weeks time or, alternatively, you can view it via the lookbook, as well as in the flesh through stockists or at the studio via appointment.
