Peak Cycling in Paris - Get on ya Bike!

Cycling in Paris? Well sadly I admit I did not manage to straddle a saddle and go cycling through Paris myself, although I certainly would have liked to. Although I have not had a bike for the last few years - insert sad face - cycling has been my primary form of transport for most of my life; so it was with much interest and both a cyclist and a photographers eye that I  paid considerable attention to the style of bikes I saw being ridden and the personal style of many of the people I saw riding those bikes. And as a rider from Australia where cyclists are sadly viewed as a menace, road-kill and potential cash-cow.. it was truly great to see the wide cross-section of people choosing a bike as their means of transport to get from point A to point B. It's also nice to see people free to ride without a helmet - I read recently that many European countries have introduced a law where if there is an accident between a car and bicycle the driver of the car is automatically at fault; which is the opposite of the law here in Australia I believe. Perhaps this is one of the reasons people can ride without fear for their safety; though having competitive cycling as the #2 sport throughout Europe I think means your average Madame and Monsieur are very bike aware anyway. It seems too that age is no barrier to getting on your bike, nor is fashion a problem, wear what you like. The bikes? I must say I was happy to see what I took to be an inordinate number of vintage 1980's frame sets; it seems you can't beat an Iron Horse after all. Of course the 20,000 Vélib bikes certainly made their presence felt too and next time I am in Paris; I will certainly be taking one for a spin. So here you are, 20 views of cyclists commuting along Boulevard du Palais just after 6 pm, 28°C while I enjoyed a lazy beer at L'annexe - I didn't even rise from my café chair to get the shots! If only things could be so civilised back home.

Spring/Summer 2013 fashion trend: Metallic/holographic's

Lustrous foils, precious-metal prints, iridescent fabrics and holographic finishes brought glitter, gleam and gloss to the catwalks, shining on all of the major runways of the world, the metallic trend.

From flirty, feminine frocks and shimmering pencil skirts, to iridescent pastel coats and delicate brocade jackets, everything fashion has had a metallic make-over for spring / summer 2013. Metallic clothing trend allows you to create a stunning look without spending too much energy and time on it!

This is a bold look, definitely not for the faint-hearted, but they're definitely worth the risk.
Stick to one item at a time and matte metallics are ideal for those who want to test the waters with the fashion trend.

A Metallic bag, be it gold, copper or silver, is a versatile bag colour that is way less boring than black but just as user friendly.
A beaded metallic top is a great way to make a pair of dark denim jeans worn for a night out.  Metallic isn’t just for formal anymore and the use of them in a more casual tank top.

1. Keep accessories minimal

Since metallics pack a significant visual punch all on their own, there’s no need to go overboard with accessories. If you are going with a more prominent metallic piece, rather than a style that simply has metallic accents (an all-metallic dress or blazer) you’ll want to keep accessories basic or forfeit them completely.

2. Pair metallics with neutrals

Its easy to incorporate metallics into your wardrobe this spring by wearing them with neutrals. Silver jackets paired with stark white trousers,or pair short-sleeved white blouses with metallic pencil skirts to create looks that are eye-catching yet elegant. By using neutrals to balance out a metallic piece you can keep your look on-trend without going over the top. Pair a metallic pencil skirt with a cream or grey sweater or tone down a pair of sequined cropped pants with a fitted shirt in basic black or pearly white.

3. Choose form-fitting pieces

Most designers chose form-fitting metallics to create sleek looks balanced by looser blouses, jackets or pants.  Short and tight gold skirts, metallics tend to look more polished when worn closer to the body, creating an evening-appropriate look that’s both elegant and edgy. Add black ankle boots or gladiator sandals to toughen up the ensemble and add interest to your overall look. Loose metallic jackets can be worn by belting or balanced by fitted pants and skirts, which kept ensembles looking clean and refined.

4. Wear one metallic piece at a time

The key to wearing metallics and keeping your look polished was to choose one piece and accentuate it accordingly.  Since metallics create such a bold statement, wearing too many at once can cheapen a look. Choose one key piece (slim pant, statement bag) and let it be the star of your outfit.

Metallics offer a fun way to freshen up your look for spring and update your wardrobe for a new season. Whether through pairing with neutrals or keeping accessories minimal, the key is to wear them in a way that anchors rather than overwhelms an outfit

PATCHWORK IN PARIS

Of all the outwear trends coming in for fall 2015, capes are definitely my favorite! Cozy and comfortable, yet oh-so-very chic and pulled together! This particular patchwork one from Chloe I wore during Paris Fashion Week is my current obsession! Love the statement-making retro color combination and the asymmetric hem which tends to drape in the most beautiful of ways! But as is with most pieces I tend to obsess about, what I adore about it the most is versatility! Obviously a bit partial to the way it pairs with floor-length flare jeans, I find that it looks equally stunning worn with a black turtleneck, skinny jeans and ankle boots or over-the-knee boots. In any case, the possibilities of wearing it are essentially endless and of course knowing me, you know how much I love that!

Your Ultimate Guide to The Best DIY #GirlBoss Halloween Costumes

The countdown has officially begun…

Less than two weeks before Halloween night! So you're now down to the last details of all of those Halloween parties you planned on hosting/attending but you haven't decided on a costume just yet?

Thankfully there’s an array of options that exist within our favourite movies and television shows. Between DC comics, cartoons networks (Space Jam, we’re lookin’ right at you) and the endless high school archetypes (Well hello there, Cher Horowitz!), there are just so many fictional characters to choose from and today, I rounded up my top 5 characters from cult films and pop culture to inspire you for a stand-out Halloween costume!

If you've been living under a rock for the past few months and didn't get the 411 on Baywatch coming back to your home screens (starring Zac Efron and The Rock, major YAS!),  it is time to get on with the program ;) The iconic 90's sitcom which has inspired generations might just be your best pick for a solo or squad costume this year. This one is easy enough to put together straight from your (or your mom's) closet and surprisingly, lets you show a lot of skin or no skin at all!

If you plan on spending most of your evening out, try wearing nude stockings under your red suit and a red/white, varsity-like bomber jacket over it so you don't get too cold. A nice blowout set with Bumble and bumble's sea salt spray will get you the perfect beach hair while a few coats of Vita Liberata tanning mousse will give your skin a nice, natural sun-kissed tone.

Although she ruled with terror and wickedness, classic Cruella, from the beloved 1961 cartoon to the early 2000's Glenn Close adaptation, has always been a leading lady and a queen of style. Exuding undeniable self-confidence and sophistication, she was all about extravagant fashion yet, achieving such a look happens to be more of a breeze than you'd think...

Aside from her infamous oversized, exuberant fur coats, the woman was all about basics: a midi-lenght, black slip dress, red pumps, matching opera gloves and her iconic longer-than-life cigarette holder. Beauty-wise, a very dramatic black and white hair dye does the tricks and deep, bloody red lips complete this Cruella De Vil inspired Halloween costume.

Another fun way to get a little looney this year is to dress up as one of your favourite childhood cartoons character, Lola Bunny from Space Jam. Lola is a boss lady and is not afraid to speak her mind, or tell you to your face not to call her doll!

Channel Lola's sporty vibe with a replica of her Tune Squad ball uniform, a cute pair of bunny ears and a clear complexion with gorgeous highlights. If you want to go all-the-way, head over to Flight Club to scope a pair of the popular Air Jordan 1 'Lola Bunny' sneakers and be ready to hit the courts with your own Tune Squad teammates.

Now, if you wanna talk easy-to-put-together and inexpensive Halloween costume, Uma Thurman's Mia Wallace character from Pulp Fiction is your gal! The black hair vixen was anything but conventional and loved to have fun her way.

To make a good Jack Rabbit Slims twist contest Mia Wallace, all you need are three basics: a white button down, boyfriend shirt, a pair of black wide-leg, ankle skinnies and a simple black ballet flat. Add on Uma's infamous black, pageboy-style wig and you'll be Quentin Tarantino's latest muse in no time flat.

If you don't think matching plaid skirt suits are acceptable on the daily, Oct. 31st is the time to put together your best Cher Horowitz Halloween costume. With the 90’s back in full force, creating a totall Clueless costume is now super easy...

Yellow tartan coordinates really are the key elements of this outfit. As for the rest, anything goes! I recommend keeping it classic as Cher would; matching cardigan and white accessories (mary-jane's, knee-high socks and backpack). On the beauty front, a casual blowout with a bit of volume is always on trend and pink lips must be lined. Don't forget to chew gum for the valley aesthetic!

Last but not least, Catwoman will forever be one of the best Halloween costumes out there. I’m just fascinated with how she can be a villain one second, then a hero the next. She is the ultimate #GirlBoss!

This classic badass costume can be easily reproduced with elements of your own wardrobe like pleather legging and a matching bodysuit although, for an authentic look, I would advise you to purchase an actual PVC onepiece. This is without a doubt the most characteristic element of this feline heroin and what makes her so sexy and sensual. The rest is simple: over-the-knee leather boots (as anyone should already own since they've been hugely popular this season!), black dramatic leather gloves, black eye mask and cat ears.
