The Corinthia's very own Bassoon Bar is one of the newest additions to London's luxury hotel & gastronomy market, and the new coveted retreat for Art Déco and late 1920's jazz enthusiasts. It opened its doors back in April 2011, after an endless four years spent refurbishing the former hotel-turned-palace which now dominates the corner of Whitehall Place and Northumberland Avenue. Those who have had the pleasure of visiting before will confirm that not a dime was spared in the esthablisment of such a high-end institution.
The bar is at once contemporary and elegant without actually taking itself to seriously, at times, mocking the late-era of the roaring twenties with a seven-metre-long grand piano that doubles as a bar ! A pretty clever and chic innovation we own to the Dublin-born interior designer, David Collins, who unfortunately passed a little over two years ago, but thankfully left behind him a great legacy in his signature vintage-classic style at bastions of British luxury.
Bassoon also explores the parallels between music and design, and is host to live music signature sessions, which have previously included performances from Lana Del Rey and the Scissor Sisters. Its fancy Art Deco-inspired cocktail bar offers a extensive list of bespoke concoctions that combines classics with the bar's own creations, all featured on their innovative iPad menus classifying dinking options by kinds, liquors, eras and trends. I went straight for the prohibition era with a succulent shake of Tanqueray 10 Gin and fresh lemon juice, sweeten with a touch of Maraschino liqueur and Crème De Violette, which the Bassoon baptized Aviation. Other favourites of mine include the signature Bassoon Martini and its super-sweet Bubble Gum flavoured counterpart, along with their classic peachy-keen Bellini, British colonnial Pimm's Cup and a very soft and refreshing mocktail called Fantasia. In addition to an over 10-pages long list over wines and cocktails, the bar stocks a particularly varied range of vermouths, and an array of champagnes that will certainly please the connoisseurs !
In visiting the Corinthia, you’ll be unlikely to spare any expense yourself, that mentionned, if you value flawless service, this is your destination in London.
